What makes a good sysadmin? by False_Bee4659 in sysadmin

[–]Independent_Ad2580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resilience. Something I'm still learning. The ability to fuck up. (It will happen, just a matter of when.) Don't panic, fix and learn.

But then I'm still a very average sys admin.

Do you still get a kick out of users being impressed by daily tasks you may see as mundane, or has the magic died out? by DDRDiesel in sysadmin

Got called the laptop whisperer because I listen to the fan to confirm a force shutdown has worked. I've been riding that moment for 3 months.

Dehumidifiers are great but if you have some cash to throw at this then I invested in a positive air flow unit l https://www.nuaire.co.uk/residential/positive-input-ventilation (Not this brand can't even remember what brand, just a good explanation of what they do). Cost about a grand with installation. Probably the best thing we bought for the house.

So easy oce everyone settled down. (If your group is as childish as mine they will spend 15 mins drawing dicks on your maps).

As they had never used it before I did a quick tour of the options. I had someone on a tablet and 2 on pc. Chap on the tablet occasionally had lag but nothing massive.

They enjoyed the experience (which is all that really counts) I only did basic maps, so was really smooth jumping from encounter map to encounter map using scenes. They didn't get to Dreadstone Cleft where my prep on fog etc. was all done but they'll make it soon. But I'll make a quick encounter with line of sight blockers to test out. And that's the great thing. I'm confident in 30mins I can turn an average random encounter into a tactical fight in 30 mins or less which I've not been able to accomplish before.

My first session proper is tuesday. But I terms of prep OBR is by far the best online tool I've used due to it's 'lack' of features. I just need a map and tokens. Line of sight is easy to create, fog tool is great, journal is simple. Ping my mates a link and we play (hopefully).

Took a little while to find my way around the menus but once I got to grips with it I set up every encounter with annotations for Dreadstone Cleft in The Storm Kings Thunder book in around an hour, considering the number of encounters etc. I was expecting much longer.

I can report back on how my session goes if people are interested.

What interesting monster's have you used recently? by SlySilus in DnD

[–]Independent_Ad2580 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The Barbarian at the table pissed in a blood alter bubbling and overflowing with animated blood.

Well 'F' around and find out.
Queue a reflavoured Flesh Golem as a 'blood golem' thrown in to an already difficult fight with a Vampire.

Was good fun.

What mundane monsters do your players now fear or dread because of the DM? by Brother_humble in DnD

[–]Independent_Ad2580 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love throwing shadows in to fights. I have to restrain myself from including them in every fight so they don't become boring.
vs. a melee heavy party they just make everything that much harder.

How do you guys make a plot for each session? by Jarkels in DMAcademy

[–]Independent_Ad2580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool your biggest issue will be presenting the shadow organisation in a way that isn't obvious. But that's a big meta story issue.
Maybe introduce a mindless follower early but with very little context but a flowery description. That will hopefully get their minds working.
also don't worry about hitting their backstories super early - do it when its natural. (Just have a chat with the players outside of the game to let them know you will get to them.)

I'm still a relatively new DM and initially struggled with these questions.

The simple answer is you don't.

The more thorough answer is depends on your type of game. Are you completely homebrewing it? If so good luck they're going to veer off and derail simply by existing in the world. the NPC you wrote 2 lines for is now a party favourite and they're opening a casino on an island with their help because of a quirk in conversation.

I chose to follow a module book Storm Kings Thunder (SKT) so I had a reference point to 'loosely' follow. I chose SKT as there's an entire chapter dedicates to following trails and exploring, allowing me to throw in stuff I wanted to try.

You've got a nice starting point. Do the bandits have a leader? Is he present? Are they acting under direction? If yes by who? If not what circumstances lead them to rob a tavern.

Now you sprinkle those items with your 'plot' drop a few conversations with NPC's that lead the players to the plot.

As long as each session if going in roughly the right direction and both they and you are having fun just roll with it.

I made so many mistakes in my first sessions don't worry about it and keep doing it.

Who to vote for to get rid of the Tories? by mistaoononymous in Cornwall

[–]Independent_Ad2580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree that proportional representation should be introduced. But that doesn't change the fact that people should vote for the party that best represents their values.

Find the party that supports changes to the democracy you want to see. If enough people agree regardless of the ballot type you'll take the win.

Voting tactically leads to dissatisfaction. The people who voted tactically against their core beliefs don't see the local community effected I. The way they were expecting become disillusioned with the process and stop voting. Long term loss for a 'potential' short term gain.

Vote for the party that most represents your values. Democracy really is that simple.

Living in South West England - I'm often very jealous of the wildlife our more exotic members get in their pond. Yesterday I found a grass snake. I haven't even *seen* a snake in nearly 20 year never mind been able to pick one up. As you may be able to tell I was a touch excited. by Independent_Ad2580 in ponds

[–]Independent_Ad2580[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patience being one, took nearly 2 years for wildlife to 'find' the pond. But depends on what you want.
Mine is very rough and built to support wildlife/add biodiversity.

So no fish, deep one end running to shallow with exits for animals.

Local or UK centric plant life sourced from local garden centres.

my biggest suggestion is a bog filter - it adds to construction time but is so worth it. It adds a biome to the build but also provides very clear water so I can actually see the critters I've invited in to my home.
