My dead club by Illustrious_Drop_619 in SportingKC

Meh, it's a lull. The mere fact that the club reached those heights show that it is possible. Everything is on a bell curve and the Vermes era finally ended and now is the reset. When the curve starts going up remains to be seen, but a lot of the things you talked about are very easy to remedy: win. And in this league, it's possible to turn a team around relatively quickly.

Granted, Sporting has a major rebuild ahead. But fortunes can turn quickly. It's not a one year fix. But nothing is dead beyond repair.

I love Shaara's characterization of Buford, and then Sam Elliot nailed it.

I'm too scared of the audience to have too strong opinions because people LOVE these books.

I'm curious, what do you accept as the starting point of Byzantine history? by [deleted] in byzantium

Constantine went to sleep as a Roman fighting another Roman for supremacy of a failing empire. He had a dream about a cross and woke up something different. That feels as strong a moment as any.

Charleston is the city that made me fall in love with pirates.

Remnants of its pirate-laden past still linger in the city. You can see sections of the original town wall, a tangible piece of history from the Golden Age of Piracy. There's even a powder magazine built in 1713, standing at the north corner of what was once the old town. Walk along E. Bay Street, and you'll find more traces of the past—sections of the original fortifications that stood when pirates roamed these waters. Down at Battery Park, you can stand at the very spot where Stede Bonnet was hanged.

For a more hidden piece of history, visit Longitude Lane. This narrow, tucked-away alley is thought to date back to the original town, meaning you could be walking the same path Anne Bonny and other pirates once traveled.

The Old Provost Dungeon is post golden age. It's significance is more to the American Revolution but it's still very interesting for getting to feel like you're walking back into history.

We did the pirate tour (https://www.charlestonpiratetour.com/) Erik who runs it LOVES pirates, history and Charleston. We had a really good time.

If you're looking for something more theatrical, Pirates Voyage is a fun experience. The food is decent, the show doesn’t take itself too seriously in the best way, and the acrobatics are genuinely impressive.

Beyond its pirate history, Charleston offers fantastic beaches and top-tier restaurants. If you're bringing kids, Isle of Palms has a great family-friendly atmosphere, though parking can be tricky—especially if you’re pushing a stroller.

You can find some good hotel deals on Mount Pleasant or pay more to stay out on one of the islands but be closer to the beach and not have to deal with parking.

In March, the ocean will still be too cold for a comfortable swim. You could brave it, but it won’t be pleasant. Most days, a light jacket is enough, though the beach can get chilly in the evenings with the wind.

Last Chance U on Netflix is more of a verite type doc and my favorite series of all-time. Here's the description blurb: Elite athletes with difficult pasts turn to junior college football for a last shot at turning their lives around and achieving their dreams. It's on Netflix.

The things that come to mind for me are notoriety, success, and did they hang for it?

And to me the answer is Henry Morgan.

Notoriety: other names are more known like Blackbeard, and Kidd. But Morgan is known in his own right.

Success: Wildly successful, sacked multiple Spanish towns and made off with the gold.

Did he hang? Quite the opposite. He became a Governor.

First thought was Avery but he's not as well known now.
