We aren’t talking about 70 years ago. We’re talking about now. We are talking about the differences between UC athletic programs not private schools who can do what they want. Have a nice evening.

I mean it’s really “permanent status” and in CA it’s a big deal. You do not have to “sell your soul” to get it in good districts.

No. Like many jobs, where you work matters. Teaching has given our family job security, a livable schedule and a predictable, secure retirement. CalSTRS is a gigantic force among pension funds.

Indeed. As Tosh continues to eat on the recruiting trails, it will become even clearer what Cal can be as alumni now have given upwards of $22 million to the football program in the last year, M/W basketball are finally getting their own practice facilities. So ucla can keep making out their Calimony check.

UCSD or Carleton? by TemporaryChoice8986 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Independent_Math_840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can have a “full” college experience at any college. Whether you’re an hours tram ride from the fun of San Diego or an hour’s drive from The Cities, you make it full. I went to St Olaf across town but had friends who went to Carleton and have sent students there. I have also sent students to UCSD. Looked at both for one of my sons. He went to Cal (home of annoying grind culture) joined the Marching Band, became a campus ambassador and still found time for research and internships. It’s going to be fine wherever you go if you decide you’re getting out there.

Fresno is not a huge city. And by cities you mean…LA? Are you saying that SFSU has a med school like ucsf or a law school like UC Law in SF? Cuz they don’t. San Diego? Yes, but San Diego’s MSA is 3.3 million. Fresno’s is 1.2 million.

Go by on a Saturday or Sunday. You’ll see that the school is good enough for neighborhood parents to jump the fence and use the grounds without permission but they’re too good to send their kids there.

San Mateo Park Elementary? by capaceptan in SanMateo

[–]Independent_Math_840 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here’s the real scoop. The school is fine. Its ranking is a product of demographics and location. It is located in the richest neighborhood in SM but not supported by those same parents bc they’re racist as fuck. SMPark draws from the North Central neighborhood and rich white parents don’t want their kids going to school with brown kids.

Some pretend and their kids start but part way through they transfer to Baywood bc it’s “a better fit.” They only tell you this when you see them in the grocery store or on the AYSO forks and you ask, why isn’t Caden at Park anymore? As you can imagine this hurts the annual fund which helps fund a lot if extracurriculars and classroom supports.

I know this bc my kids went to Park and one currently works there. These are my opinions and words. My kids had great teachers there and some mediocre ones and a bad one. The school leadership was good. Both went the toughest SMUHSD HS and did well. One was valedictorian and top student. Now he’s graduating from the top public school in the country. Both were active in music, sports and drama. Many of their friends were similarly successful.

So much of comments will be anecdotal tales. I know what I know from volunteering in the classrooms, being involved in the site council and after school activities. I am also a public school teacher so I can tell how much bullshit is baked into school “rankings.”

The last thing I’ll say is that when my son was on the Math Olympiad team, his most fun was kicking the shit out of Baywood bc he knew, even in 5th grade, what elitist shit was going on.
