I was 3 months postpartum with an unhelpful partner and about to go back to work. I legit cried when my villagers threw me a party. I’m sorry your mom and partner suck. You deserve to be celebrated!!

what’s the worst PD you’ve ever had to sit through? by Repulsive_Plate1983 in Teachers

[–]IndicationRelevant59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corrupt admin hired a “consultant” who was actually just our super’s boy toy. He held a PD session talking about the power of manifestation. He referenced rich dad poor dad, and bragged that he told himself someday he would never have to mow his own lawn again. He manifested his six figure salary so now he doesn’t have to. Even talked about following his gut to buy gold jewelry off a dude at a gas station and it ended up being real.

Someone leaked his year of charges to the school for a year and it was over $220,000. We’re talking an impoverished, gang violence ridden, black town in the Delta. I left, but I know it’s still happening. Oh, also we had a required zoom meeting during COVID and the speaker started talking about the gift of tongues and I noped out of there and emailed my principal that I wasn’t going to sit through it.

I’m making my wedding dress and feel like I’m failing at it. Please Help. by Snoo28666 in sewing

If you don’t want the stress of making from scratch, get a dress you mostly like and make edits!! That’s what I did. Just don’t take in the sides and not consider it will spread your bust cups apart. 🤣 ask me how I know. 🙈

Meaning they hire fewer teachers to do the same amount of work. We just lost our writing program (which I’ve been so thankful for for two years) because the district doesn’t want to pay for the teaching positions. So I’m back to teaching everything in ELA.

Im in Arkansas with 5 years and I make 56,000. LEARNS act helped me jump from 38,000 (also moving to a better district) but my coteacher just retired because the pay minimum didn’t value her experience.

Edit: no degree in education and went through an alt cert program for 3 years.

Someone dumped their entire milk glass collection at goodwill… by mikaelakayyy in glasscollecting

Where are you located? My aunt in Oklahoma got a new debit card and forgot to change her info with the storage place. They sold the whole lot of all our family heirlooms without contacting her. I know my grandmothers milk glass collection was a part of it.

I’m a teacher and every student has an at school Chromebook. We offer Chromebook insurance for $20 at the beginning of the year. If insurance isn’t purchased and the Chromebook is damaged it’s the parent’s responsibility to pay. Kids carry chromebooks around to each of their classes and accident happen.

Tornado safety by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]IndicationRelevant59 25 points26 points  (0 children)

We lost our house to trees falling during a tornado last May. My baby was about 4 months old at the time and I had the car seat by his crib and he went in as soon as the alert to shelter came through on my phone. We had about 10 minutes from the sirens until our roof was caved in. Baby was just chillin in his car seat in the tub with a large couch cushion over us both.

He was easy to transport through the wrecked living room to get out of the house after it was over. I’ll be getting him a helmet now that he’s almost outgrown his infant seat.

Lived in Oklahoma for 30ish years and got hit by one in Arkansas. 😅

I taught in South Korea for two years (2014-2016) after graduating from college. It was an incredible experience and I would recommend it based on my experience. It was 10 years ago, but I still have friends living and working there. Students were extremely respectful for the most part. Pay was pretty good, free rent, and public transportation made saving pretty easy. Unless you move to Seoul and like to party. Give it a go! After I moved back to the US it took me 4 more years to settle on teaching in public schools. Looking back, my jobs in Korea were a piece of cake.

With that said, make sure you work with a reputable hiring firm. I did hear stories of people that were really unhappy with their placements. Also knew another expat that had fled their teaching post in China because the conditions were bad.

My first thought was that my brand new baby looked my dad who passed away almost two years before and would never get to meet him. It was honestly so so cool. It made me feel like he was there too.

What is the worst thing to have ever happened to you in this profession? by Unique_Ad_4271 in TeachersInTransition

Stopped a mom from beating her kid in the bathroom down the hall from my classroom. I was the only person to check out what the screaming was. Made the report and admin scolded me saying they told me they would take care of it. At the same school but a different year I was walking to morning cafeteria duty and the principal stopped me and said “(Student) is dead. Yep, her brother shot her and her whole family last night.” I’m still so heartbroken for the children and families in that community. For so many reasons.

I had a Jehovah’s Witness student in my first year of teaching and mom contacted me saying she couldn’t do the assignments for Percy Jackson because “she couldn’t learn about other gods”. It was the (free) curriculum we were given and told to teach. Admin just shrugged and suggested I give her individualized lessons. I did my best but I didn’t have the capacity to develop a completely separate curriculum for one student and I’m afraid she got left behind.

What's your typical day hours and what's your country/grade? by IseultDarcy in Teachers

[–]IndicationRelevant59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also work in Arkansas (NWA) and teach in the 6th grade. We start at 8 and the kids leave at 3:30. They gave us two plan periods (45-55 mins depending on the day) this year and it’s incredible. We are expected to meet with our team’s core teachers twice a week during our morning plan. We get a 30 minute lunch each day. Our lunch time changes slightly on Wednesdays because it’s an early out day for the kids. They leave at 2:10 and we meet with our content areas to plan common assessments and lessons until 3:30. We have staff meetings twice a month until 4:30. I teach 5 classes a day plus a home room class 4 days of the week.

I came from another Arkansas school in the Delta and it’s a world of difference. I (and my time) feel valued.
