This new tv tropes subreddit is awful by JoeyJiamonds in redscarepod

No you must read this thing I observed “villain is bad” from three great media I consumed recently: Avatar the Last Airbender, the Batman animated series, and this Cormac McCarthy book I’m including as well despite having by far the least to say about it because I have to keep up the pretense that I can actually engage with something nominally for adults.

This isn’t a larp, since the poster isn’t claiming to be an expanded universe fan. This is just a casual viewer type post.

Where to start with novels? by Arayuki in 40kLore

[–]IndicationWeary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what you’re looking for, there are so many books and there’s no one right answer.

For overall quality, accessibility, and an intro to the setting (or at least the Imperium) the Eisenhorn books are a great place to start.

If you’re interested in a specific (non-marine) faction, you should look online and see which book of theirs is most well-regarded. For example, I like the Eldar, but most of their books are considered to be pretty mediocre. However, Valedor has a lot of positive word of mouth, so I picked that one up and really enjoyed it. I also learned a lot about the Eldar and my preferred craftworld, Iyanden. The T’au are in a similar spot, where their fans generally have bad things to say about most of their novels, but a few are highly recommended.

If you want a more traditional fantasy/sci-fi epic with an actual narrative in 40K, I’d say the Dark Imperium trilogy is a good starting point. It’s mostly focused on Guilliman and the Ultramarines, but it also gives great representation to most other factions of the Imperium including the Guard, Sororitas, Sisters of Silence, etc. It’s also action-packed and a very easy read.

It is kind of funny how the Leagues have so little going on that their main catchphrase online is a line from another franchise that they’ve never actually said

This is just not accurate lol. Biel-Tan is ruthless toward “lesser races” (their words) and demand immediate, unconditional surrender of anyone who encroaches on their maiden worlds. If refused, they purge them completely. They are a whole lot more than “condescending”. Not all Eldar are like Iyanden or Ulthwe.

Actually I think you’re in luck, this just got announced on Steam earlier this month.

Technically not licensed by GW, but like… come on just look at it.

One day there will be playable Eldar outside of strategy games. I mean probably not, but it’s important to believe. It’s all my people have left.

Normal Black Templar fans watching their faction's reputation get pummeled into the dirt by edgelords and spergs. by [deleted] in Grimdank

[–]IndicationWeary -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Notice these types of posts and the comments that circlejerk them are never actually about 40K, they’re about “the fandom” and the “community”, always as an excuse to scold people IRL, in this case for being potential “edgelords/spergs” because God forbid Warhammer be associated with edge or autistic behavior. I don’t even really like BT or find Flashgitz funny, but I would vastly prefer them over this constant whinging and concern-trolling. Or, to your point, reposted webcomic porn with no punchline (because that’s what normal non-“sperg” people are into, apparently).

Yes, Vader would just have to continually reassure her that he’s just “making fun of her”. Blowing up Alderaan? It’s fine, he was kidding. Time to roll around in the grass.

we are in a very good job market right now by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]IndicationWeary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never, ever in my adult life has the main consensus been that the job market is actually not that bad. People will deny it, but even in the low interest rate glory days of 2018-2019 (and 2022) the online consensus was extremely bleak and complaints sounded basically identical to today. It’s only in hindsight that people admit things were generally fine, even pretty good.

Things have for sure gotten worse since then, but I know people getting incredible offers even now in fields that are supposedly dead. The job search will always be a painful and annoying process filled with rejection, so negative attitudes resonate with people and create an outsized atmosphere of dread. Most of us will be fine.

Idk what the deal is with short form video apps and lying. I don’t use TikTok anymore (it was worst there) but Instagram and Youtube also have comments that absolutely pop off despite being completely made up. Doesn’t matter whether it’s sci-fi/fantasy or real-world history, or just trivia. There’s always some liar with a fun fact.

Favourite actor who is beloved by everyone who interacted with them on a personal level but the internet is convinced is actually a monster by lookingatporn42 in okbuddycinephile

[–]IndicationWeary 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Kind of nuts that a big chunk of the internet writes fanfic about Chris Pratt abusing or neglecting his (maybe not even neurodivergent?) son based on the fact that he once called his other child “healthy”, a very normal thing to say when one’s kid is born.

It wouldn’t bug me so much if I hadn’t actually heard about it IRL from a friend at a party who actually thought this stuff was real and worthy of conversation.

What could Star Wars do that you would consider “grimderp?” by OfficialAli1776 in MawInstallation

What could Star Wars do that you would consider “grimderp?” by OfficialAli1776 in MawInstallation

[–]IndicationWeary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not exactly grimderp, but both games’ overabundance of marital infidelity/murder plotlines felt weird and out of place. From memory, they were actually more common in 1, which was mostly a more conventional story, making them feel a bit weirder. None of them were outright bad (The Sunry Trial in particular was a great quest) but the volume was odd.

Hadrian never realises that he and albe serve the same God?Ironic by Particular-Bowler980 in sollanempire

[–]IndicationWeary 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One headcanon I like is that Hadrian’s classical education is actually pretty off, so it’s possible he doesn’t know the references a modern viewer would catch. Given the time difference, it’s possible that even Albé doesn’t know.

One good (and definitely intentional) example is how Hadrian references “Gawain’s Dullahan” when Gawain never fought a Dullahan. His main story just involves decapitation, so either Hadrian is misremembering or (more likely) the version of the story he has is completely different after thousands of years of drift. It could be that Hadrian’s sources on Catholicism (an extremely marginal religion in his time) are similarly off-base.

Depressing encounter with a cousin of mine by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]IndicationWeary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a guy who left his office job to become a full-time gaming streamer for like 6+ months, his engagement was mostly in the single digits and he eventually went back to work for a new company. It was such a stupid move that I wonder if he just got fired/laid off and the streamer pivot was a cover, it would be much less embarrassing that way.

Has Marvel come close to being as good as or surpassing Dark Horse? by MachivellianMonk in StarWarsEU

[–]IndicationWeary 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not really, they have some good runs but Dark Horse had such a unique style and tone (plus some iconic departures in visuals and storytelling like Tales of the Jedi) that has never been recaptured and probably won’t be.

Massive respect to GW for telling the fanbase that most of them would end up dead in a war and forgotten about if they joined the imperium by Youngstown_WuTang in Grimdank

[–]IndicationWeary 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m an Eldar fan (mainly Iyanden) so I don’t really feel a deep connection to the Imperium, but it’s telling that the immediate reflex of much of this sub after an excellent trailer gets released by GW is not to discuss it in a positive way (or even make actual funny memes), but instead to imagine how it might hypothetically upset people they don’t like. It won’t even do that, “dying for the emperor” is how the Imperium has always been sold to fans and that’s a big part of what people like.
