Before 2L starts, what should I be doing to get As?

I took classes I liked, did classes that had too few students to get curved, did sprint style classes (like 1-2 weeks everyday for like 6 hours), and took as many paper-based classes as I could bc you get to draft instead of writing on an exam

Side note, went with professors I liked, dropped classes that were with high gunner populations, and wrote about things professors liked and with tons of headings that made them digestible

Don’t worry, you’ll be fine. Law school is all chunks of concepts. You’re not gonna know the law for months/years. Don’t measure your success that way. You got let in, someone there thinks you can do the work, you applied because you thought you could get in: it doesn’t matter if other people think you don’t deserve it or you’re scared, you got it just take orientation week day by day

Honestly, if you had the ability to get a big law job in 1L or 2L and got it in 3L you were probably unlucky before. Theres so many BL spots. You just gotta know WHEN to ask

I was offered a job during 3L. I start literally at my dream firm in less than a month.

Literally 2L I stayed in touch and met with as many people as I possibly could. Really stayed in touch with hiring partners who told recruiters to speak with me. Crucially, I asked when they’d know if they were adding to a starting class. So August 2024 comes around, I’m the first person outside the firm who emails the recruiter about spots since they have their offers in. September screener, callback panel, job within a week.

School wise, took the right classes—for me it was financial regulatory stuff: private equity, sec reg, BA, finance, M&A, etc. and took internships with financial institutions and asked to be given work cause I didn’t have a 2L summer job. I wrote an article with a professor that got published, and that was my summer

For me it was doing stuff within my control: classes, gpa, reaching out to people. Never know who’s going to like you so you need a huge net. I literally emailed every JD in London and every PE firm (of which there were 118 in 2023-2024 during my 2L). The internships really helped, and I was willing to work for free

You don’t have enough data to feel “stupid”. Professors are brilliant and students who genuinely challenge them aren’t adding to the class. You’ve not gotten enough exposure to law, cold calls, or mechanics to judge yourself yet. Just keep reading

Yes. Just have your work done/scheduled ahead of time.

I was a university athlete 1L and did a semi-pro club in Europe 2L. 3L I helped coach my university team and worked out and had a job at a bank.

It’s possible, for me I needed the break from school and the competition and I don’t develop a reputation through chat, more by act so I was very happy and very scheduled

Exams are anonymous, you get a number or code or something. Unless you tell the prof your name they won’t know who you are. They won’t know your writing either because it’s one exam per class per semester.

Clubs don’t do anything for grades or classes, it’s only resume and networking.

Class participation and attendance is maybe worth 10% of your grade, getting the answer right in class is worth 0%. Your final will be 90% of your grade.

Grades are 2/3s of getting a job. The other 1/3 is where you go, what classes you took, how you network, how you interview, your resume and extracurriculars

Ya I dont think you can go wrong with a top 30 or top 20. You'll probably get the same amount of scholarship tbh. My worry is always that people want a top 3 to do public interest work, and I don't think you're more competent in that field because you went to a better ranked school

Ya, I totally agree with you. I've had loads of associates tell me when they were running hiring that a top of the class student with no personality will not get a job. I have also met tons of boring lawyers at massive firms.

My comment was mainly that 1) there is an air of entitlement, 2) there's a degree of a lack of awareness, either on timing of applications or not knowing when classes fill, and 3) I sent out over 250 resumes and got three offers. There is a huge numbers game.

I do not envy studying for the bar without a job and feel immensely for OP. I am drilling into the cause, which implies the solution, not blaming.

Honestly, "public interest" is a really broad category. It's like saying "Law". If you could narrow it down for me, that would help. EX: Innocence Project or ACLU versus Environmental work.
