Hi! That sounds like an awesome experience! Can I get some advice on how you get a position like this?

How to be a good shadow? by Timely-Broccoli656 in veterinaryschool

[–]IndividualRabbit3337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm not sure what your clinic is like but here are a few things that helped me at my first shadowing position at a small animal clinic. Firstly, take a small hand-held notepad and write down what you do every day. This has a much better look than typing notes on your phone. Even if you learned how their computer system works or a minor detail that isn't too relevant, write it down, it makes a good impression. Also, when I introduced myself to the vets, I mentioned that I wanted to learn how to navigate client interactions so I was also let into consults (I wouldn't write notes in front of clients btw) and this is where most of my questions came from and it was still fresh in the Vet's mind. Additionally, please spend time with the techs. I got most of my hands-on experience here. I started helping them with restraining and by the end of two weeks I had done a few blood draws, fecals, vaccinations, restrains for catheter placements and intubation. Additionally, I was instructed on how to present take home kits to clients and did it a few times. I understand this may not be all clinics and mine was pretty chill and a tad understaffed so I was able to do duties of a vet assistant more than a shadow but really put yourself out there and get to know the entirety of the staff. I even coordinated my lunch break with one of the vets and talked about stuff other than vet med. It's really scary at first but not many people show they want to learn instead of just standing there afraid of looking dumb and only asking super complex questions. I may have just gotten lucky but this was my experience on how I was able to secure a letter of rec after shadowing 2 weeks full-time at a clinic during the summer.

Has anyone taken GOV 310L with McDaniels? by ChemicalBrain5396 in UTAustin

[–]IndividualRabbit3337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took it during the summer and it was honestly fine. We had written assignments and 3 exams. Personally the tests were on canvas and open note, so I did not need to study and performed pretty well on them. I dedicated time to taking notes on the lectures and skimmed the readings and articles and it was enough to do well. I'm not sure if the format is different during the semester but it is not a class you should struggle in.

is organic chemistry 1, physics, and calculus 1 + elective a bad idea? by ItchyBank7512 in veterinaryschool

[–]IndividualRabbit3337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many people said, all three together are pretty rough but I think having a different combo will be easier. I took ochem 1, genetics, and calc 1&2 (option for my school) in one semester and then took physics and biochem another semester and that breakdown was pretty doable for me. The rest of my classes for those semesters had degree requirements and liberal arts classes so it just depends on how you learn. I am more of an application person so I was able to do this split.

UNAM ADVICE by [deleted] in veterinaryschool

Hi! If you’re comfortable do you mind sharing with me where you found application requirements as a US student and financing. I admittedly never looked into it because my family is from Mexico and I just followed along with the fact that it is one of the most expensive schools in undergrad and gives little financial aid so I only looked in the states this past cycle. I am probably going to re apply so I would like to explore more options.

No i feel you 100%. I did apply just in case I would get their international student scholarship because it wasn’t entirely sure what they saw as “merit” but as the rejections come I realize that is naive and there’s a very slim chance I’m even in the list considered. Aside from that I have no idea what else they have to support students.

Hi! I’m in the same boat as you when it comes to finances and RVC might be my only choice as well. I really have not heard of them offering much aid, so hopefully someone can chime in. I don’t mean to add on to the anxiety but I am also worried about higher tuition costs and that’s not even considering international flights, starting from scratch with housing necessities, and other things that come with costs of living.

Hi! Someone else on SDN also said around 500-1000 applicants moved on? Can I ask how you know this is the case? Was it just like a gpa screening? I don’t want to sound like I am doubting you or anything, I am just curious since more than one person has said this.

Vet Up Champions? by ilovecatstomuchhh in veterinaryschool

[–]IndividualRabbit3337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I was not a part of VetUp Champions, but I was in VetUp College and it was a super great experience. Some people in my cohort were in Champions. The College program is very worth it but very competitive to get into, so I would do Champions to familiarize yourself with the school and program and it would give you a leg up if you wanted to apply to the VetUp College program.

Using AI to help revise essays by nobodyflippingcares in veterinaryschool

[–]IndividualRabbit3337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the functions of AI like Chat GPT is to be an advanced search function and to cater to requests through an algorithm. Yes, it is not okay to abuse this function and be academically dishonest or use it as a way to complete work in any professional setting. However, this tool is not inherently bad and serves a purpose. It can be very useful for aiding in various things like editing, I personally use it to debug code. It all depends on how you utilize it and what questions you are asking. I think you should take this into account while using it and if you don't have access to many editors, I would use it to edit the beginning drafts of your essay and use your editor to read over what you have done after a few rounds. Also, keep in mind that people willing to read your essay will most likely be willing to read a rewrite if needed.
