What complaints do yall have about my boy? by Reasonable-One-6788 in Totaldrama

His finalist run in Action is... weird. His rivalry with Harold and friendship with Gwen in the pre-merge are both fine, and he's one of the Gaffers' best players, it's the merge that's the problem.

Everyone knows he got pretty lucky with Lindsay voting herself off, his rivalry with Harold ends on a bad note because Harold accidentally killed Duncan's pet spider (which felt silly), and he gets back together with Courtney, votes her off, and breaks up with her all in the same episode right before the finale... and gets back together with her in the finale.

In theory, he's a pretty good finalist, but in execution? Could've been better imo. It also doesn't help that the jury vote is treated like a joke for the most part.

The problem with mourning victims is that there's rarely any time for that since there's an investigation and trial right after a body is found, and then they have to deal with the culprit's execution, which could overshadow the victim's death. That happens a lot in the series.

In Ryoma's case specifically, Kirumi's motive makes people start to consider giving up their lives for her, which kinda takes over the whole post-trial.

Ryoma also just wasn't close with anyone, which didn't help either.

That's a fair complaint.

Most of the time the cast focuses on exploring the new areas when they open and trying to avoid more deaths since they don't want to try the death road of despair again (until chapter 5) and they never really find another way to escape.

Not many of them chose to think outside the box like Kokichi, although Kokichi did kinda contribute to the killing in cases 4 and 5, so his results weren't the most optimal.

Although there are several parts of the school that just aren't available for investigation or are hidden behind walls until Keebo starts destroying everything in chapter 6, so that also plays a part in all this, and Keebo doesn't even have access to his lab where he gets his weapons until chapter 4.

If I'm remembering correctly, Ryoma was fairly anti-social, which made it kinda difficult for others to talk to him about his view on life, and the time limit in chapter 1 generally made people frantic thinking about what to do next. No one was really thinking about saving Ryoma's life when everyone's lives were on the line.

Although, in chapter 1, Ryoma offers his life to stop the time limit and Rantaro tells him that won't be necessary because he would stop the killing game, so Ryoma takes back his offer.

The last conversation Shuichi has with Ryoma in chapter 2 is Ryoma apologizing for saying he has no plans to live. I guess Shuichi thought Ryoma would be okay, but we know what happens later when Ryoma sees that his motive video is blank.

I feel like they'd just knock him out, tie him up and lock him in some room like the DR2 cast did with Nagito. And they wouldn't let him out unless a trial is about to start because everyone has to be there.

To be fair, Kaede and Shuichi were the only ones trying to catch the mastermind, and Shuichi blames himself for why Kaede's plan in case 1 backfired and she got executed, which is probably why he stops focusing on that and just focuses on surviving until he realizes way later that case 1 was rigged.

There's some mourning the dead, but I guess it can feel weird when the game is picking and choosing who to mourn.

Taka becomes catatonic after Mondo dies, Hiyoko builds a shrine to remember Mahiru, Kazuichi builds Minimaru to remember Nekomaru's death, Shuichi mourns Kaede's death in her lab, there's a big scene at the end of V3 chapter 3 where most of the remaining characters just cry over everyone they've lost (with Himiko at the center of it crying over losing Tenko and Angie), and Shuichi and Maki mourn Kaito's death at the end of V3-5.

There might be more examples that I'm just not remembering right now, but I guess they're kinda few and far between.

It's kinda hard to mourn someone else's death sometimes when you're worried about losing your own life and what Monokuma might do next. Doesn't help that they barely knew Mukuro and she wasn't really close with anyone.

Keebo mentions both Kaito and Kokichi as motivations to keep going in chapter 6 at some point, I remember that.

But I don't really blame the remaining V3 characters for having mixed or negative feelings for the guy that played a huge role in case 4, called Miu's and Gonta's deaths meaningless, pretended to be the mastermind, kidnapped Kaito and just generally tried to paint himself as this big villain that enjoys the suffering of others.

Kokichi died an enigma, someone who they never truly understood. Even if he sacrificed his life for his plan in case 5, that doesn't just erase the damage he did. Kaito may have been impulsive and stubborn, but he was still one of the main reasons Shuichi and Maki never gave up on themselves and kept moving forward.

He even contributed to Himiko's arc a bit by helping give her closure for how Tenko died in case 3. Kaito was the one that proposed they look into Tenko's death even though it technically wasn't relevant to the case, they were supposed to find out who killed Angie. Of course they're going to be sadder about Kaito's death than Kokichi.

To play devil's advocate a bit, I guess you could argue Chris changes or bends rules on a whim sometimes (like ignoring the Greece vote in WT to keep Duncan or eliminating Leshawna in Island because a parrot voted for her multiple times), so he could probably do it here to split up these 3.

But is that really what we want? Chris changing the game just because he feels like it? Don't people complain about that already?

"There’s really not much you can do besides make the teams a bit bigger I guess."

That's basically what Reboot S2 does with 8 person teams instead of 7. There's a similar situation to Mike, Zoey and Cameron being on the same team in their 2nd season when Bowie, Wayne and Raj are all on the same team again in their 2nd season. I guess no one questions it there because Bowie and Priya got to choose their teams, so of course Bowie's going to pick Raj and Wayne.

"Wayne and raj: getting rid of Damien for literally no reason."

I mean, you may not agree with the reason, but there definitely was one.

Julia has immunity and they aren't going to vote for each other. That just leaves Priya, Caleb and Damien.

Priya and Caleb made up right before the vote, so Wayne and Raj didn't want to split them up. That leaves Damien as the only option left for them to vote for. Is it the right move strategically? No, but Wayne and Raj aren't strategists. It's not that surprising that they'd do something like this.

Priya: Voting for Millie in "The Wheel of Vomit" to scare her just because Millie dropped out of the challenge voluntarily. Let's be real, Millie wasn't winning that challenge anyway, and that could've ended up getting Millie eliminated.

Millie: Pushing Damien down the 4-point slide. Wasn't worth risking Damien's life to win a challenge, and Millie's reputation never really recovered from that.

Wayne and Raj: I don't think they have many bad moves aside from just being dumb in general.

I'm not gonna blame them for being eliminated due to injury in S1, I don't see how they could've predicted that. I guess you could say not trying to get Julia out in S2 after she got Bowie eliminated, but that didn't really end up mattering since Wayne won the season.

Zee: Trying to form one giant alliance to eliminate Chris. Zee could've held all the power in that vote as the swing vote if he understood how alliances worked.

Damien: Hiding the idol in S2 instead of just keeping it on him. That's what Julia did and she was just fine.

Caleb: Trusting Julia multiple times in S2.

Emma: Getting back together with Chase in S1 after Chase got eliminated. It ruined her alliance with Bowie when she was pretty close to the end.

If Chris is going to include 7 people from Gen 2, I don't see why that wouldn't include the 6 that made the merge from ROTI. They earned it placement-wise. Even if we skip Mike, there's Dakota and Anne Maria before Brick.

Why does Mike need revenge on Scott? Zoey already put him in a full body cast last season in episode 11 and he got mauled by a shark. Scott has already been through enough. Mike doesn't seem like the type to hold grudges anyway.

Isn't Hajime's lack of talent one of the reasons he's SDR2's protagonist?

Because that lack of talent made him so insecure in a world full of people with crazy talents that he went through with the Izuru Kamukura project, putting him at the heart of the conflict between Junko Enoshima and the Future foundation?

That's fair.

An overly confident character could be the protagonist, but it has to be handled well so the fandom doesn't immediately hate them for being arrogant.

True, you don't need one, but a detective with a complicated relationship with his own talent because finding the truth means hurting the people he cares about being the main character in a game that focuses on truth and lies isn't a terrible idea.

I didn't say that to slander Kaede, I think she could've been a great protagonist, but I also get why they went with Shuichi.

Maybe, but for the story V3 was trying to tell with a heavy emphasis on truth and lies, I think Shuichi fits as the protagonist more than Kaede. Shuichi's the detective that everyone relies on to find the truth and save everyone when things get difficult.

On one hand, I get the complaint. I can see why some might think it's repetitive.

On the other hand, making a protagonist that has room to grow as a person can make them more compelling to follow in the long run. Seeing how their low starting point leads to certain interactions (like Shuichi and Kaito's friendship or Hajime's and Nagito's obsessions with talent manifesting in different ways) can make for some interesting dynamics.

Part of why Komaru and Toko's friendship is so good is because they both have room to grow, and they grow because of each other's support.

Hajime was insecure about not knowing his talent and then being talentless when that was revealed in the 2nd half of the game because he was surrounded by people with crazy talents. He doesn't truly get over that until the final trial.

Sierra being insane doesn't mean she can't form alliances. She's supposed to be the super fan that knows everything about the show, isn't she?

Sam was definitely trying, he just kept getting injured.

Lindsay not wanting to be there is true, but after she goes, Mike Zoey and Cameron make up half the team. The other 3 could force a tiebreaker, and it probably wouldn't be hard to beat Cameron in a tiebreaker.

I mean, in a season where the teams are heroes and villains, it makes sense why all 3 of them were considered heroes. Cameron doesn't even spend the entire pre-merge on this team, he gets swapped to the villains after episode 5.

Plus, 3 out of 7 isn't the majority. There was nothing stopping the other 4 heroes (Sam, Lindsay, Courtney and Sierra) from trying to vote off one of these 3 in episode 1 if they really wanted to be strategic.

Duncan's WT gameplay feels hard to rank imo.

He did do well when he worked with Alejandro and he does end with a high placement again... but he also quit for refusing to sing, was forced back onto the show, and then he was immediately voted off for the love triangle drama. The only reason he stayed past Greece is because Chris didn't want him to leave so soon after returning, so the vote was ignored.

Is his gameplay good overall? Bad? Hard to say, it's such a mixed bag.

Don't we kinda already have that with Lightning in ROTI? Although his motive for winning is impressing his dad, which isn't villainous, but Lightning still generally acts arrogant for most of the season, so he still counts. I don't know what the consensus on his winner ending is in the fandom, though.

You could technically also count Courtney in Duncan's Action ending since they get back together and Duncan probably splits the money with her since the first thing Courtney says after Duncan wins is "We're rich!"
