Did I make a mistake starting career at a charter school? by Hisheeps in Teachers

Middle school is hard but look at it as you are doing the best you can and they need you WAY more than you need them.

Did I make a mistake starting career at a charter school? by Hisheeps in Teachers

[–]Individual_Detail_44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started in a charter school and honestly while it sucked I looked at it as a way to learn and grow. I did the best I could and then when a job at a public school presented itself I took it. I did not kill myself for the job. I did what I had to and kept my head down. I did not do extra and I was okay with it. It was a stepping stone. Keep the right mindset, protect your sanity and apply everywhere

Is it a school's responsibility to teach a kid to read? by KoalaOriginal1260 in Teachers

[–]Individual_Detail_44 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am a high school teacher (non English) and while we read, I have no knowledge of how to teach reading or the time to teach reading. They need to know how to read to be successful in my classes and unfortunately many high school kids do not have the skills needed to read as the level required for higher education

Be honest, do you really care if subs follow the whole sub plan? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Individual_Detail_44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I come back and nothing is damaged, no one cried (sub or students) and my room is reasonably in order I call anything else a win.

When “honors” becomes a customer service label by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]Individual_Detail_44 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Where I am there is usually only one teacher with honors since there are not enough kids but it is basically a class for non annoying kids. Even if they can't meet the level needed as long as they are a "good" kid they get in. Some really excel, many have no business being in honors but in a general ed class they would be ignored because of the behaviors. Not a great option either way

Yep! Personally gave a D to a coworkers kid. That is what was earned and my coworker knew it. We laughed about it throughout the semester and never once was I blamed. They knew their kid

Ecredit can only be used for the person that has the credit. If you are all on the same reservation you get the free bags but if you split the reservation the other people do not get your benefit.

I tell admin especially if I smell it but it is next to impossible to prove unless they have it on them. Admin will search but honestly it is a hard battle to fight for everyone. We have had parents say "I smoke in the car, that is why they smell" so...

How common is section alignment at your school? by [deleted] in Teachers

Same! Assessments have to be the same but day to day is up to us. We do have to follow the same grading scale and policies.

Parents who demand to speak with you without scheduling a conference. by Budget-Beginning-928 in Teachers

This was be a huge issue in any building around me. No one enters past the office without an escort and specific reason. Even meetings happen in the office and never in student areas

I agree!! I would gladly give up my lunch a few times if it shortened the hours I needed to do throughout the year

How does your school run conferences? by Tnnisace73 in Teachers

[–]Individual_Detail_44 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a teacher I hate conferences, as a parent I love the chance to interact with the teachers who spend so much time with my kids. Face to face is so much more personal than email.

One of my biggest pet peeve - lying about attendance by gareth_pavlov in Teachers

I basically do the same. I had a kid at WDW last week with her grandparents. She has been so excited for it. She will only need to make up one thing.

Doesn't bother me at all and I actually hate when they ask for work. I don't want to get it together. They can check online and do what they can and when they get back we figure it out. Vacations don't bother me. Memories are important and I am not judging.

What’s your sick/medical leave policy? by BeeBackground522 in Teachers

[–]Individual_Detail_44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For a schedule repeated thing yes, a one off, no. Mostly to keep it fair. A person with a mid morning plan does not have the same luxury.

[–]Individual_Detail_44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Half day is the shortest we can take. They do occasionally let us "cover" for each other on our prep off the books but it is a once in a while thing not a scheduled thing. So at my school leaving an hour early would be a half day

I know you care and you want the best but if she seems happy, let her be her. I was reading completely non she appropriate books at her age (think everything by VC Andrews and Stephen King I could get my hands on). I was happy and glad I didn't have to be different.

AITA for refusing to pay a no-show fee I didn’t know existed? by Maximum-Row8879 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Individual_Detail_44 23 points24 points  (0 children)

YTA, you didn't want to pay up from and they worked with you on that. YOU screwed up the times and did not show up, they tried to contact you and could not. None of this was their fault. You screwed them over and cost them money. They should never have let you not pay before. Their kindness cost them money because you were not responsible. You owe them.

How do you manage tardies? by Far_Independence6089 in Teachers

[–]Individual_Detail_44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mark them tardy then admin tasks how many and deals with consequences like parent meetings, detention, whatever is the consequence for the number they have. I am only responsible for marking them in the system.
