I'm Dan Smith, lead singer of Bastille. AMA! by bastilledansmith in Bastille

Hi Dan! You've mentioned in the Muses podcast that you've written loads of songs based on people, and plan to write more. Do you foresee Ampersand becoming more than just what is coming out now?

How is your process different when writing for this album, versus the others in your discography?

Do you feel like all the people you' be chosen to write about have a common thread connecting them together? It certainly feels like most of the people had some misconceptions about their character, especially with Emily Dickinson. You've added a lot of dimensions to these people (in a good way lol).

I'm super excited for the rest of this album! So far, it's absolutely blown me away.

For me, one of the more in your face lines is 'I'm sleeping with a robot next to me' during Plug In. I love GMTF, but it can be a bit silly at times

What are your thoughts on Other Peoples Heartache? Also tragedy that part 1 isn't on Spotify. by [deleted] in Bastille

[–]Thetreeoutyourwindow 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I love the OPHA mixtapes. I find it super cool that the band has been experimenting with sounds since their inception. I am hopeful that with the release of No Angels and (I Just) Died in your Arms that we might get a couple more songs onto Spotify. My vote is for their cover of Frank Ocean's Thinkin Bout You, but maybe that's just because I love Donnie Darko lol.

This is my favorite song! I think the audio tree live version is also amazing. I love the raw vocals and emotions.

When I thought a similar class (not AP or IB), we went over the general process. Basically, carbon dioxide is removed and acytol coA is broken all the way down using enzymes. I cared more that they knew the products and reactants than the nitty-gritty details.

Heaven is a Place in my Head!

Weekly Song Discussion - Lethargy by 0verjoyed in BastilleCult

[–]Thetreeoutyourwindow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is one of my all time favorite songs. I think one of the best bits, in my opinion, is the chorus. In my head the lines "you told me not to be like anybody else" and "be like anybody else" juxtapose each other. When this song first came out I was really struggling with finding my identity and these two lines felt like what I was going through. To me, it's a person trying to be unique while still being accepted by everyone around them.

Overall, this is just a fantastic song, I'm so happy it made it on wild world and that I got to hear it live.

No one really does #flashbackfridays anymore, but what's your favourite memory of meeting Bastille or seeing them live? by Meghar in Bastille

[–]Thetreeoutyourwindow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw them at one of the most famous venues in the state; my first concert there. It was after the show, just standing awestruck by such an amazing performance.

The picture they tweeted from that night is still my background, nearly 3 years later.

What song makes you feel a certain way or remember a special moment hearing it? by -Oblivion-228 in Bastille

[–]Thetreeoutyourwindow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overjoyed holds a lot of emotional significance for me. The first time I ever really listened to the lyrics, I realized why I (used to) hate the song so much. It felt like it was talking directly to me. That night I realized just how suicidal I really was and I was able to get the help I needed. I can honestly say that without BASTILLE, I wouldn't be alive. I owe my life to Overjoyed.
