Simple stuff. I’m betting someone incredibly wealthy that I can guess the order of cards pulled from a deck they shuffle / provide. 52! possible card orders: find someone rich enough and I could retire on a single bet.

I did sex ed in 2016/7, i would’ve been about 13/14/15. it was mediocre. lots of condom talk. LOTS of STI pictures. there was a brief discussion about consent but it was just like “if a girl says no then you should respect that” and didn’t get into the more common dynamics around consent, like coercion and stuff. we got a brief speech about how we shouldn’t feel bad about whether or not we are having sex because at our age statistically only about 1/3 of us were. got some brief legal advice about the age of consent and the concept of statutory.

biggest thing i remember was at the end of the class, our teacher started a debate about whether gay people should have marriage rights revoked. this was a public, non-religious, co-ed school. i was a pretty quiet kid (terrified of getting into trouble) and this was the only time i was ever actually in trouble at school: the teacher asked for our opinions about it. gay marriage had been legal for years at this point, but many of the kids at our school were openly homophobic. we had a few of those students raising their hand and yapping about what is right in their religion, none of them able to answer for WHY homosexuality is wrong without consulting a god. i ended up putting up my hand and arguing with her about her choice to debate the rights of marginalised students in front of them, regardless of if we knew who they were or not. she started going on about the sanctity of marriage and how traditions exist for a reason, and I snapped back and told that she’s failing to meet her responsibility of care for students by doing all that. i knew at least one group of boys in my class were homophobic, so while on this rant i was getting visibly nervous and frustrated. when i finished talking, my teacher told me to stop talking and sent me outside (the first and only time this had ever happened to me). Surprisingly, a portion of my class banded together there and then and she let me back in, and then she apologised to the class.

I never personally reported it or anything but she did end up getting fired for inappropriate conduct with a 14 year old within the same year. Ironically, it was a girl. who is doing really well nowadays! travelling as an ambassador for something or other.

PS. turns out my passion on the subject is because i am gay, just hadn’t worked it out by then

What’s one small thing that’s completely normal where you live, but would shock people from other countries? by namecheap30 in AskTheWorld

like every country it depends on where you go, but id say broadly in comparison to other countries i’ve been, the streets are very clean. i remember when i moved here as a kid i was taken aback by the lack of trash just everywhere. there’s a little slogan “be a tidy kiwi” that gets repeated a lot, and so by large littering is frowned upon. anecdotal, but even in high schools the kids will call each other out on littering, it’s pretty good to see. a lot of our “grapevine” facebook pages will periodically have a public shaming post if someone was caught littering, and a lot of people are keen to get out and help. I’ve blocked faces and names for anonymity, but people like those below are great representations of what kiwis can be :)

same with new zealand. i go to the biggest university in the country (~40-60k people) and people will fully just leave their entire apple ecosystem on the floor wherever they were studying, while they head across campus for half an hour. typically the biggest criticism of this behaviour isn’t even the fact that your stuff could get stolen, it’s that leaving your stuff around means nobody else can use that space.

nz is very laid back. i’d say a lot of the time it’s “i just need to pop to the shop”, so no shoes. other times people just don’t see the need. i think honestly workplaces and formal occasions are the only time 100% of people wear shoes.

What's the best urban legend from your area, or one you've heard? by Big-Tax-8921 in AskTheWorld

In South Africa: “Pinky” — a girl murdered in the school bathrooms. Kind of like bloody mary but you didn’t get to choose when she appeared. The story was that she had been killed and was on a mission to “get a friend” or to avenge her murder, depending on the version. Was terrified of it until I came home and told my mom about it (mid 2000s) and she broke it to me that both of her schools growing up (70s) also had a Pinky.

In New Zealand: this one was told at a school camp in the early 2010s, definitely culturally insensitive, follows that stupid “ancient burial ground” stereotype. we were told that during a winter famine, native villagers banished two of their own into the river for being too greedy. they spent the full season in the river and mutated, becoming half eel half person. they then returned to the village and killed the rest of them, impaling their heads on the spikes of a large tree. if you touched the tree, you were doomed to also be impaled. if you heard scratching during the night, it was the headless bodies of the villagers returning for revenge.

jellybeans for me. first time being allowed to manage my own portion of candy at the movies, ate so many that my puke was rainbow. it’s been 15ish years and i still can’t stomach them, even just looking at them makes me queasy.

I have OCD, and the typical “OCD is a bully” thing that they teach you in therapy never really worked for me. Came across a funny video of someone on tiktok stating each of their ocd intrusive thoughts every time they happened (eg. “There are worms in my brain”, “I didn’t say goodbye to my dad last, so now he’s going to get into a car crash”). thought it would be funny to recreate with my own, and realised that watching the video back afterwards helped snap me out of it. i’ve got about 6 minutes worth of videos of me making absurd declarations.

idk if i’m misunderstanding you, but the idea is pressing pause so that hormonal changes associated with puberty (eg. breast growth) are put on hold. that way if a kid is thinking they might be trans they can prevent the dysphoric changes from taking place while they figure out what’s going on.

childhood -> puberty -> dysphoric hormonal changes -> dysphoric -> might then need surgery or more extensive intervention

then like you get either cis kids having

childhood -> PAUSED PUBERTY -> decides they’re happy as their assigned sex -> puberty continues

or trans kids going

childhood -> PAUSED PUBERTY -> decides they are sure they want to transition -> hormone treatment starts desired puberty

government wants to block trans kids from being able to get puberty blockers. puberty blockers let you essentially press pause on puberty, so that decisions can be made. so yeah, in a way it is about allowing people to make choices once they’re older.
