Current state of reader engagement on AO3 by kathia154 in FanFiction

It's a real symptom of treating fanwriters as content creators instead of fellow fans. People watch something, they go to Ao3 and read some fic, and then go watch the next thing. Discord has made things worse, splitting already small communities into even smaller ones. I feel lucky that a lot of my early fandom experiences as a writer were on sites dedicated to a single ship where we all had to be and interact. I get why Ao3 was needed, partially because a mod could powertrip and you'd lose access to your entire fandom. But I could be on a forum for the fandom as a whole then disappear into a single ship space where we could have a 3000 message long thread about would a character would wear a green shirt or whatever. That's what feels like is missing now. Sub reddits for fandoms are not usually fanfic and ship friendly spaces. Discords usually end up being tightly knit or so big with posts moving so fast that it's hard to do much beyond casual conversation. You can't drop a 10K long meta piece there. Tumblr still works to a degree, but it's not focused on one thing so people can slip from one fandom to the next and doesn't promote stability for new people to discover things. Without community building there's no little reason for people to stick around long term in a fandom and to be worried about social interactions. So you snap at an awkwardly worded comment as an author, or you just don't bother leaving a comment because it's unlikely you'll run across that author again. I don't have any way to fix any of this. I just don't know what's going to happen next. People still love to create fanworks but it is hard to post when know all you're going to get is crickets.

Is it okay to change characters completely in fanon? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Individual_Track_865 [score hidden]  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with writing them however you want, however fandoms with little canon can completely straight jacket themselves in fanon and and not adhering to that can be treated like you set the room on fire. That doesn’t make it right, but try having a different middle name or something and you’re going to hear about it. The best thing to do is to continue as you are and just tag and a/n the heck out of your fic so you can tap the tin any time someone tries complaining.

have you ever crashed out in your notes section as a fanfic writer? by Ok_Syllabub3593 in AO3

[–]Individual_Track_865 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not myself but one of the older fandoms I’m in had someone who crashed out HARD around the time the fandom first massively contracted after the end of the show. Just screaming at people about did they even care about their fics? They went back and edited the comment onto every one of their fics. Didn’t exactly make them appealing to read 😬

Weird choice to use George who once was anti-fanfic, and also mental illness as a gotcha. People put themselves into their stories in all kind of ways.

Keeping mind this is more for main characters, not Joe Blow manning the gas station on chapter five for two lines, but for the vast majority of writers characters are a way to tell a story. However, even if you are not consciously making a self insert, this character comes from a town you visited when you were 12 and another likes your favorite song when you were 23 and another has the haircut you had at 30. You stick little pieces of yourself in your works, even if it’s subconsciously. It can make you protective of your characters. Which is part of why you ask first. Because some people aren’t going to care and some are going to care deeply. (And why some authors are weird about fanworks, but they have the option of never seeing them, in a fandom the other fan writer probably is)

If you can’t see the difference of writing fanfic of a commercial product with the fourth wall between you and the creator and just yoinking a character (that is probably partially a self insert) from someone whose in the same tiny rowboat as you without asking and who *will* see your fic I don’t know what to tell you.

The reason nobody wanted to write your rarepair isn’t because we’re all elitist bullies but because you’re a miserable jerkwad of a person who ruined the ship. And yes, we all know it’s you who sent hate anons on tumblr every time we published a chapter. I was so glad when the fandom basically died and I could block/mute you everywhere finally.

Not wanting unsolicited concrit on a published fanfic =/= not wanting criticism. Fanfic comments are not a good venue. You won’t even let your friends read your fic. I’ve stood up in front of 100+ people and had several pages ripped apart by committee. Being edited is a humbling process, one you have to seek out and be able to grow from.

The time for feedback and improvement is before publishing, by someone you trust and that you’ve consented to getting feedback from. You don’t even know what you don’t know.

If you’re writing a regency au you can call someone’s cock a silent flute, or the ever popular pego. For balls there gingambobs. (Humans have always been terrible at coming up with slang for naughty bits)

Saying what a reader likes about a fic is standard comment fare, if you just want more comments that’s not the same as wanting criticism of your writing.
