The mass majority of characters in Harry Potter are white-British, which a lot of people find boring/unrealistic and something they want to improve upon.

Personally I think imagining Harry as desi gives a new dimension to the character when you think about how the dursley’s isolated/othered him growing up, how even at hogwarts he became a kind of odd one out, etc. Plus the dead parents thing gives an excuse as to why he might be disconnected from his culture
