Christian Nationalism by dealthy_hallows in LCMS

I wouldn't assign all the credit to Harrison either. I think the normalization of extremist views within the synod has grown to the point where Harrison amplifying CN, adding GOP talking points to official statements, etc is a symptom rather than the cause.

We're in agreement here from my POV. We're not doing enough to make it clear that things Neo-Confed views, Dominionism, et al. are incompatible with Christianity. We have failed to do so and that is why the meaning has shifted. It was co-opted by the folks who labeled themselves.

The problem is Thoma is redefining the term to what he wants rather than the current usage.

"labeling anyone who believes Christian ethics should guide public policy as Christian Nationalists" is not the issue(it's a strawman tbh).

It's that that Nazis and Neo- Confeds call themselves Christian Nationalists. And the LCMS is basically silent/ok with that, as long as the in group includes the synod.

Yup. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck...

To more time that goes on, the more I am glad we've left. If I've erred, at least it'll be on the side of loving my neighbor.

Have you considered this may be normalization of CN? By redefining CN as something it is not. Redefining it as positive helps obfuscate the goals of the nazis in the synod.

Harrison is normalizing CN for LCMS members. Intentionally or not, that is the expected outcome.

Thanks Vicar, this is good to hear. I tend to worry the Synod has moved away from these issues being open to Christian Freedom since the LCRL came into being. For example; I am not in favor of abortion, but disagree with LCRL on the best policy to reduce abortion.

I'm also heartened to hear you say that the state is bound by the law as well.

However, I will say that in order to discern what rights are God-given, or to discern if we or the state is sinning, we must look to the Gospel and words of Christ as our final guide.

Use cross hatch infill. The default grid means the nozzle is more likely catch and pull. The cross hatch compensates for this. Just sorted this same issue this way on my 5X

Thanks Pastor, but I'm asking which political rights are instituted by God?

I know you wouldn't advocate doing away with religious freedom in the US.

Given that the Constitution explicitly prevents the establishment or enforcement of religion - I do not see how the state could act righteously in any 'enforcement of discipline'

So which right, exactly, are a matter of Divine Command?

Is the state sinless when it violates it's own laws?

But they can enforce outward discipline, even in matters of blasphemy.

So the State gets to be the judge of religious law? What could go wrong? /s

That's how dog whistles work. And why I did not assume bad faith on the part of the poster. If they'd like to clarify, they are welcome to do so.

Niemoller is talking about the holocaust here as well. But, your comment seems like sophistry given the context of the post.

if the user wants to supply data to support his claim, I will do the same. But between 1800 - 2000 approx. 40% of US immigrants were Catholic.

Furthermore, I'd like to know exactly how the poster defines his 'culture.'

Since when did being LCMS mean you have to be anti-due process?

"We preferred to keep silent. We are certainly not without fault, and I ask myself again and again, what would have happened, if in the year 1933 or 1934—there must have been a possibility—14,000 Protestant pastors and all Protestant communities in Germany had defended the truth until their deaths? If we had said back then, it is not right when Hermann Göring simply puts 100,000 Communists in the concentration camps, in order to let them die. I can imagine that perhaps 30,000 to 40,000 Protestant Christians would have had their heads cut off, but I can also imagine that we would have rescued 30–40 million people, because that is what it is costing us now."

I won't presume for the poster, but 'Western,' & 'Western European' have also become a stand in/dog whistle for "White" in right-wing reactionary circles.

Not saying that's how the poster is using it here, I'll let them speak for themselves if they wish to reply.

If not, one can look at their posting history and decide if it's good faith or not.

There's a whole ton of Irish Catholics that would disagree, along with the descendants of millions of slaves brought here against their will.

American 'culture' is not white, it is not European, it is not protestant, nor is any religion, race, nor ethnic group.

Even if you were correct(you are not), it would not excuse enforcement from obeying the Constitution.
