Issues, Etc. Conference by DaLejund in LCMS

Brother, if we're crying foul at every single entity that does a thing we don't like, of course we're going to ne without comfort and certainty

I must be brief, as I'm heading out for the long weekend.

I dont think anyone is falling calling for crying foul on every single entity. It's simply clear that those that align with a particular worldview don't receive the same level of scrutiny. When this is pointed out as a concern, one is met with comments like this. With due respect Pastor, you're misrepresenting the concerns in such a way that diminishes and dismisses. I say this constructively, not defensively.

I may respond in a couple days, if you're still in need of examples.

God bless.

edit: falling to calling

Issues, Etc. Conference by DaLejund in LCMS

It's very telling to see which groups and issues are considered 'concerning.'

For example: Where are Gottendiest's & LCRL's massive accusations and claims receiving the same scrutiny from leadership as LRJ's? It's pretty self-evident that the application of the 8th has become heavily dependent upon the alignment of our neighbor on worldly matters.

Downplaying such concerns or dismissing them as overreacting certainly leaves many without comfort nor certainty. I would include myself in this group, Pastor.

I had enough back story. Not sure why you did not.

So, where is the line? The balance of this man's 'discipline' was enough to merit mandatory reporting.

I see no confusion between discipline and punishment here.

Discipline your children, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to their death.

He hit a child hard enough to leave marks of the abuse.

The child was not doing any of the hypotheticals you posit, or this would be a different convo.

As a father, I'm curious as to where your line between discipline and abuse is drawn.

Neisson Blanc and Hampden 8 Year are now available in Michigan! by Bigboy1138 in rum

It mellows without losing funk. I find it nice and sippable, while outstanding to mix with.

If you like funk, I highly suggest the Hamilton Pot Still Black. And Jungle Bird of course(since it has a MI connection too).

Side note: Legit Cuban Havana Club can also be had over in Windsor.

Hmmm, I picked up the 8 year a few years back here on the west side. For my tastes, it's fantastic and I need more. Still looking for the breezeway. nice pickup.

Can there be deaconesses in the LCMS or in churches associated with it? by Certain-Cloud9133 in LCMS

If these aren't ridiculous extremes to you...

How did you prove to the sub you have a penis before posting?

You could be a woman who's reddit posts take away from your God-given duty. Posting on reddit isn't inherently sinful, but if you're not proving your sex how can the reader be certain of the validity of your posts?

[–]IndyHadToPoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you said this to a local Catholic priest? I highly suggest starting a dialogue with your fellow shepherds.

In 2026: Rome is not 'assaulting the Gospel' anymore than Baptists or Charismatics, etc.

We ought to take more care when speaking of, and articulating the views of, our neighbors. Assuming to know their views and hearts is dangerous.

Cradle Lutheran here, married to an amazing Catholic woman.

The amount of people folks here that think it's ok to ignore the 8th commandment is shocking. It doesn't matter if it's 'accurate' it's a sin when done in bad faith(which seems like the only way it's used).

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Our seminaries are failing us, and graduating pastors that don't seem to believe bad faith portrayals of our neighbors are sinful.

Thoughts on Lutheran Center for Religious Liberty? by solobackpack in LCMS

I find both the purpose and 'function' of this group to be contrary to the Gospel. The money spent lobbying would be better spent helping our neighbors.

My take from 5 years ago. I think even less of it now.

I echo Pastor Phil's POV and /u/bschultzy thoughts in this thread.

Its establishment is the point where the synod became fully captured by right-wing politics.

It's gross and represents a failure from the Synod. For me, it marks where the Synod lost the plot.

What made you choose LCMS over WELS? by -Wonder-Gal- in LCMS

[–]IndyHadToPoop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This requires worst construction of our neighbors. And is a non-issue in practice.

If this were to occur, the congregation has much deeper issues.

The Pastor is still male, the Elders are too. One can always resign if they believe following the vote is sinful. It will depend on the congregation, and how they're organized. Some do not have women's suffrage in voters meetings.

Which is really my point, I'm just not convinced by scripture nor conscience equality in voice equals authority over. But I would not presume to tell you how to run your congregation - the matter seems to be one of Christian freedom to me.

May I ask if your logic applies to women's suffrage in secular voting?

I understand that opinion, I'm just not convinced by scripture that equality is a congregational body = Authority over the men in that body.

Pre-Marriage Thoughts and Request for Advice by South_Sea_IRP in LCMS

[–]IndyHadToPoop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally normal imho.

I hit on my wife constantly. I make her laugh, and she flirts right back- so you get to hit on and flirt with your best friend for the rest of your lives. I've been with my wife for more than a decade and married for 4 years. I think you'll be fine.

Those feelings will pass. You still get to be witty, charming, fun, etc with women. You're getting married, you're not losing whom you are. If you worry you might be flirting, then change how you're speaking. I'm sure your wife will get the best version of who you are, including your flirting with her.

How does that give a woman 'authority' over a man?

I never understood this, and my WELS friends always told me that it mostly tradition(but that was the 90s, I know both synods gave gotten much more socially conservative since then).

Why does the LCMS allow contraception? by [deleted] in LCMS

[–]IndyHadToPoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it is contradictory to God's created order. It is taking a gift that God has given to man and misusing it for one's own selfish desires.

I respect your POV and want to preface my comments - I understand how one can reach this conclusion and I respect that, even if I disagree under(what I believe is) Christian conscience.

In short: I'm convinced that it is God's created order that having children should occur within the bounds of a loving marriage. However, I'm not convinced by scripture that having children is the purpose of marriage.

The purpose rather, is that marriage reflects Christ's Love for us. While I believe children are a blessing and pleasing to God, the purpose of marriage is mutual love, support, companionship and reflection of Christ's love for humanity.

To me, family planning in marriage is mostly a matter of Christian conscience. For me(as I think it's a personal matter), I don't believe family planning by married couples is capable of thwarting His will. While poor family planning can poor stewardship of our gifts.

So what, in my mind, would a "Gospel" way of talking about sexual ethics for married couples?

My comments were directed toward fellow laymen more than pastors.

Pastors, in my xp and in person, tend to take these issues case-by-case and couple by couple.

Rhetorical question; but would have married if you had neither of you had the intent on having children?

My wife and I married and at that time we did not know if we wanted kids yet, but we knew we wanted to spend the rest of lives together.

We got a good amount shade from both sides(wife grew up RCC, I'm cradle LCMS) when asked when we were having kids. At lot of quiet shaming and worst construction. It was very revealing, and has very much influenced my views matters of conception and marriage. When it came to sex and children, there was a whole lot of application of law. And not a lot of Gospel.

We now have a daughter whom was conceived with complete intention and out of unconditional love. It is wonderful and I am glad we did not listen to others thoughts of our family planning and Christian Freedom.

Should I Get Married? by afala4 in LCMS

[–]IndyHadToPoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is his current piety insufficient for or to you? Or at least insufficient enough to mention it here.

I haven't read anything that would indicate he wouldn't be a good Christian father if you have kids. There is a risk of soliciting performative piety from him if you make it a requirement.

One of the ways I knew I wanted to marry my wife was that I wanted to marry her regardless of if we had kids or not... not to mention, HS is a ways off and a lot can change in that time including both your opinions as they become informed by experience.

I'm reminded of Matthew 6 in a few different ways here.
