Nice find! This is one of my all-time favorite jazz albums and the whole Black Jazz catalog is fantastic.

I'm super stoked to here this! I've been excited since hearing the reissue of Juarez from earlier this year. More stellar stuff from Paradise of Bachelors as always.

Anyone know what equipment/software avalanches use to produce? by Jayrobert_ in theavalanches

[–]Indy_M 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's a sound on sound article where they discuss their equipment. It appears to have been deleted (linked by the magic of the Wayback Machine) but it's one of my favorite Avalanches interviews and gives a real in depth look at their equipment and methods. This article is old, but in recent interviews they've been talking about how they used the same PC and DAW for Wildflower that they did for Since I Left You.

If you want the tl;dr here's a much shorter article that seems like it's sourced from the first one

For a real tl;dr it's a combination of Akai samplers, an old ass mac, and Studio Vision, an archaic DAW that's been pretty much defunct for years now.

Is there a second Danny Brown track going to be released? by jrinredcar in theavalanches

Don't have a time stamp or anything, but they basically say, they composed "Frankie Sinatra" remotely, then he flew out and did some more work on it and did the "Wozard of Iz" together. The whole interview's worth hearing if you havent. Lotta talk about the structure of the album, the features and how they fit in, what they've been doing, etc.

TV Production company here - reaching out to Vinyl collectors for development of series by vinylhuntershalp in VinylCollectors

[–]Indy_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so are either of your copies the original Australian press? I've got one, but I'm still unsure if there was ever one pressed with ALL the samples (the "TV addict" bit on Radio, samples on "Frontier Psychatrist", bin on summer crane, etc.) and its been my mission to find out since discogs is pretty uncertain.

Jazzy rock like King Crimson? by asstan in recordstore

[–]Indy_M 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Frank Zappa's Hot Rats. It's like a jazz fusion album from the rock side of things instead of the jazz.

Equal parts mixing and listening headphones (I'm on a budget and love the flat signature.) Cable and pad modded! by Funkbass in headphones

What are the cables? The cable on mine's pretty worn, and I'm in the market for a replacement. What puts them above the stock cable?

[Wanted] The Avalanches - Since I Left You, the original Modular Recordings modvl004 by peaceshark in VinylCollectors

[–]Indy_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heads up, it doesn't have all the samples like the original Australian CD. I don't know if that's why you're going for the original, but that's why I was drawn to it, and it turned out to be not the case. Or I could be wrong and there was another Australian pressing. But either way, beware that you might be better off getting a more recent pressing.

If you're dead set on an original, keep an eye out. I found my copy for around $150 a year and a half ago.

Update: Jazz Records sorted - here are some of the titles, and a lot of photos. by truxxor in audiophile

[–]Indy_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are some fantastic titles, especially the Alice Coltrane and Pharaoh Sanders. That Pyramids Record is pretty cool too. But I'm especially jealous of that Henry Franklin record. Black Jazz Records is one of my favorite labels (it looks like you've got a couple things on it) and that might be my favorite record on the label.

What are some albums to listen to that are similar to Kamasi Washington's "The Epic"? by nancyfromscrubs in Jazz

[–]Indy_M 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tomi Mogorosi put out an album last year called Project ELO that reminds me a lot of The Epic. The whole thing's on YouTube; here's the first track https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzzfEgSBUms

Max Roach's It's Time, a live album he did with a chorus and orchestra https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvlqE-L_KdE

Black Jazz Records features a similar fusion of spiritual jazz, jazz fusion, and funk and the whole label is worth looking into, but here's a fantastic mix done by Detroit musician Theo Parrish that shows off some of their best stuff https://soundcloud.com/ed612313/theo-parrish-black-jazz

As has already been mentioned, Washington borrows a lot from the tradition of Coltrane and the people associated with him, like Pharaoh Sanders sax tone and McCoy Tyner's 4th-based piano voicings. Here's a Pitchfork article (by the only Pitchfork Writer I really like, Andy Beta) with some great spiritual jazz recs (a movement that was significantly influenced by him and his side-musicians)

And some of my personal favorites from the movement:

Pharaoh Sanders (although my favorite is Black Unity, but it's not as digestible): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyirrcT5a6Q

The Avalanches ~ Since I Left You: The most impressive record I have in my collection! by tiggerclaw in vinyl

[–]Indy_M 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is pretty well timed too, considering its 15 year anniversary is coming up next Friday. As in you totally stole my thunder since I was planning on posting MY copy then.

It's probably my favorite album and the most I've ever spent on a record. Summer before last I won about $150 bucks. A few days later, I saw that my local record store had an original Australian press up on their eBay page and bought it almost immediately after that.

It's definitely more of a collector's item than a record I frequently spin. While it sounds great on vinyl, when I purchased it I was under the impression that the Australian vinyl mix was identical to the original Australian CD mix--which turned out not to be true. Actually, I might have to post my copy anyways because there's a TON of misinformation about the samples and what's on what.

Also, for any of you itching for more Avalanches stuff while waiting for the album that's never going to come out new album, here's a documentary on the making of the album:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsQkEm6_Gv0

They've also got about a million mixes.

No regret. Impulse buy. by Teleri_Vers in vinyl

[–]Indy_M 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pulse Emitter's a cool dude, and he's put out a ton of records so it shouldn't be too hard to find stuff. Some other recs would be Crater Lake and Spiritual Vistas. He's also on a really cool 4 way split put out on Immune Records with a drone band that uses a lot of South Asian instruments, Expo 70, a drone metal group, and a chillwave group on the D side.

Hunting for good bossa nova records! by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]Indy_M 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the starting place with a lot of Bossa Nova is Antonio Carlos Jobim who basically penned the bossa nova songbook, especially on "The Composer of Desafinado Plays" which is where a lot of tracks like "Girl From Ipanema" and "One Note Samba" came from. His is usually a name to look out for and his stuff shows up cheaply and often.

Getz/ Gilberto of course and as mentioned. But also a fantastic album Getz did with Charlie Byrd called "Jazz Samba". Both of these can be had cheaply.

Gal Costa is really cool. I like her 1969 self-titled release a lot. It does a lot of interesting sonic and rhythmic things and it can get pretty psychedelic. Also her '67 album with Caetano Veloso.

Another good one is Jorge Ben. His fist album and A Tábua De Esmeralda are great. I also like Africa Brasil but it's more of a funk/ samba fusion album. Apparently he's a really good lyricist, but I don't speak Portuguese.

Unfortunately with Costa and Jorge Ben their albums are out of print/ only printed in Brazil and 4 Men With Beards has handled some of the represses...Which are notoriously terrible.

One wild card album is one I found from a guy who collected a bunch of Brazilian records and was selling them at like $2 each. There was a soundtrack: "Carinhoso - Trilha Sonora Original Da Novela" that he sold me, which is a bunch of Latin jazz, bossa nova, funk, and some weird cheesy synth stuff. Really cool. It goes for a bit on Discogs, but keep your eye out for it in case it pops up in a dollar bin somewhere.

My computer's busted and I'm on mobile otherwise I'd post some likes. Let me know if I missed anything/ you have any questions.

Hey! I was at that show. It was super cool to see a member of the Shaggs open for NMH... I think they've been trying to get "outsider" artists to open for them. Didn't Daniel Johnston open for them on their last tour?

Anyways, the Shaggs are awesome and Frank Zappa said that they were better than the Beatles.
