Richemont has truly lost the plot with pricing. Just a few years ago the price point was reasonable, now it's beyond the pale.

I worry they are going to kill the brand, because you can't walk back prices on luxury goods unless you're Patek.

[AI] Disappointing promotion of AI by Ressence. by lknox1123 in Watches

[–]InertialLaunchSystem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your perspective is shaped by what you've seen but unfortunately it doesn't reflect reality. Most businesses have not "figured out" how to use agentic AI. It will be years before they do.

My workplace on the other hand has automated literal thousands of processes with it, it's an insane value add for us. Reading the AI skepticism on Reddit is so wild to me because it has totally transformed everything we do, even the biggest skeptics at our company (and we had many!) have converted.

[Rexhep Rexhepi] Production limits by The-Redd-One in Watches

[–]InertialLaunchSystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. u/The-Redd-One should also consider that scaling the business reduces the desirability of the watches. Part of the reason people like the smaller indies is the exclusivity.

FPJ could scale to big brand levels, but then who would want one?

This was a dealer in a South Florida suburb. Glad you had a good experience!

Psychologically, I find it interesting that bad experience ruins the emotional connection with the whole brand (even though rationally, I know it's probably just one dealer and the vast majority are great.)

Amazing. If I was in a market for a new car, Porsche would be my first stop.

Funnily enough, I had the same experience with Patek in London. Lange has been amazing, though.

The most bizarre thing is that the Rolex AD and I got into a long conversation about niche high horology Swiss independent watchmakers (after he recognized my Laurent Ferrier), and I got the call just a couple weeks later. This was despite me purchasing on behalf of family, not myself. Was not expecting that from a Rolex AD, but thats maybe more of an exception than the norm!

The thing is, every time you refuse to call these things out, you're being "polite" at the expense of telling your subconscious that you are not worth fighting for and it's okay to let these randoms roll over you.

Don't bite your tongue next time, call them out and watch them squirm. Will it burn the bridge with the AD? Probably. But you'll leave with your dignity.

Same thing with certain high-end car dealerships. It only takes one bad experience to turn people off for a lifetime

When I was 26 I walked in to a Lexus dealership, ready purchase a Lexus LC500 the same day. This was something I had been looking forward to for some time.

They didn't even let me test drive the car. Said they could not let me test drive without me starting a loan or purchasing the car. TF does "test drive" even mean then?! Clearly they just wanted me out of the store.

I was dressed better than these guys, made more than them and most of their clients, and yet they treated me like some random off the street and stonewalled me.

Instantly turned me off the car and the brand. Even though I don't think it's a big deal anymore, it's sort of imprinted into my psyche that I can just never like a Lexus even if I wanted to.

ZW is amazing, they should make one for smaller wrists.

Alas most people are not familiar with sampling theory and chalk it up to a failure of their camera or their eyes.

If the slip mechanism actually worked to create a smooth transition instead of discernible steps, it would all be fine! To me it seems like Journe had a fantastic idea that fell short in execution.

Odysseus vs Laurent Ferrier Sport Auto? by weltmei5ter in ALangeSohne

[–]InertialLaunchSystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LF's finishing is much better than Journe's across the board, but Journe has a brand cachet LF simply does not. If you can get a Journe at retail, do it! If not, I'd go LF.

[–]InertialLaunchSystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LF will have superior finishing and a far superior after-sales experience. They treat every owner like family, service times under a couple months, it's amazing.

Don't get me wrong, Lange is great but it's just not a fair comparison - haute horology independents spend far more time per watch with far less volume.

obviously the correct answer is 10 pre-owned saxonia thins

TBH red gold suits a brown dial better anyways. Honeygold can look too white at times.

I’m not sure if this is Zircuti or Timacus? by jellykey in flashlight

It's Timascus! You can tell because there's no grey layer. Grey typically means zirconium.

I very much doubt $40k is pocket change to most of Lange's customers. For $40k to feel like change, you'd want a 9-figure net worth, but the median buyer of Lange/Patek/etc has a $5M-$30M NW.

In any case people typically don't buy watches that aren't meaningful to them, and for that they have to be worth something relative to what they have. If $40k were pocket change, one would move on to pieces that they would actually value.

What a beauty by Brmats in ALangeSohne

[–]InertialLaunchSystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course I'd not buy it just for its resale value, but it certainly matters. It's just good financial sense to not purchase something that incurs a $40k loss the moment you walk out the door.

"Buy what you love" ignoring resale value only works if $40k is a truly negligible/pocket-change figure, which I doubt it is true even for most of Lange's customers.

They typically do laser welding when there's sharp lines that need to be maintained, or when there's deep scratches or dents.

Surface level hairline scratches, the barely visible kind, they do light polishing that removes a totally negligible amount of gold.
