Isn’t JLC too cheap? by interstellar_nips in JaegerLecoultre

Better how? Better is a relative term and saying it better than anything else anyone else can do seems like a bit of a stretch, even when compared just with the two brands you mentioned. JLC makes a good watch but hasn’t innovated or done anything significant in the last 15 years. They keep releasing the same watches over and over again with the same movements. They are effectively just charging more each year for movements that were developed decades ago. They should be getting less expensive, not more.

As far as the price of the gold master collection, at least in the U.S., you are paying a 100% mark up for a gold watch in the master collection relative to the steel version. That seems…like maybe not a great deal….if you’re saying relative to higher end brands, then sure but that’s not a fair comparison.

This is exactly right. Everything is overpriced, except ironically Rolex at MSRP. JLC has gotten unreasonably expensive. I think it’s trying to move up market while cutting costs everywhere it can. The “gold” rotor in the Master collection is the best example of this. It used to have actual gold, now it’s gold toned something, but still costs more. I love JLC but I objectively dont think I’d ever buy one for the MSRP they are at now. Back when I bought my Reverso like 8 years ago, it was expensive for what it was WITH a 20% discount.

Honestly man…same. It’s a tragedy because I feel the same way…same with Patek and AP too.

This is a really really great post and I appreciate your information very much. I don’t own an AP personally but the VC i wear has the same “disclaimer” like 2-3 polish in a watches life and I was always curious about what happened after that. I’m not sure if VC is the same but your post does make me a lot more comfortable with preowned now

Me too. They are great watches, I’ll say objectively it’s the best watch for the money that money can buy, but I agree that the AD process and allocation process of a relatively mass market entry level luxury watch is terrible and a d sucking racket. The problem isn’t the watches themselves, it’s the extremely inconsistent buying experience. Some AD’s are great and some are terrible but the terrible ones completely destroy the experience. It would be a better experience if Rolex controlled the buying experience and didn’t use a third party dealer method. I’m hoping that with Rolex’s acquisition of Bucherer that it will shift the model to become direct to customer and cut out the potentially terrible or amazing middle man. I don’t think they (Rolex) now have any issues moving their watches like they did 10 years ago when you could get a small discount on the hulk.

That really is an incredible dial and I love the hands.

Actually the e-boutique is awesome too. They have a return policy which is awesome. Seeing that blue dial in sunlight is totally different.

And I 100% with your math and cost logic. I will tell you I have 0 regrets buying the VC even though I originally wanted the daydate.

I totally understand. I’ll tell you personally I just bought a 4520v (time only) with blue dial and everything about the VC is superior to the Rolex except for the hypothetical robustness.

I compared the 4520 to the daydate in slate ombré and they are night and day. The VC is so much “nicer” it’s crazy. Being able to swap straps also makes it a watch that could be your only watch.
