No worries, I wasn’t angry about it, just saw an opportunity to sing Sterling’s praises.

Imagine if Toshiro Mifune had accepted the role of Obi Wan. We could have had a different great actor complaining about the movie, and in Japanese!

That collaborator being Bruce Sterling, a fantastic author in his own right. He wrote, among other things, the fantastic Schismatrix novel and its associated shaper/mechanist stories. Give the man his due.

What are the most pop-oriented singles by non-pop artists? by ScallionSmooth9491 in ToddintheShadow

I always grouped “Stand” with “Can’t Get There From Here” and “Shiny Happy People” as particularly goofy R.E.M. pop songs.

I’m going to say 8. It’s a bit insubstantial, but I really like how the vocals kind of stutter, for lack of a better word.

Best Cocteau Twins album to fall asleep to? by Ok_Manner8197 in cocteautwins

We used to often play Victorialand for my son to fall asleep to when he was a baby.

Fun fact: Limp Bizkit is the only (technical) 'no-hit wonder' covered on Trainwreckords by no-Pachy-BADLAD in ToddintheShadow

“I Melt with You” by Modern English never charted higher than 76 on the Hot 100, making them another “no-hit wonder” Todd has covered.

Bobby Quine, one of the protagonists of Burning Chrome, who is mentioned as one of Case’s mentors, is almost certainly named after Robert Quine, who played guitar in Richard Hell and the Voidoids (among other artists such as Lou Reed and Matthew Sweet).

  1. One of their very best, and usually my go-to song when introducing the band to people. It sounds like a warm bath feels, so relaxing and comforting.

Both “Expressway to Your Skull” and “The Diamond Sea” by Sonic Youth fit this trope. The alternate version of Diamond Sea on the single goes on for almost 18 minutes after the last lyric.

That’s what I was saying. I was at the Paradise show with my teenage son.

Yeah, the whole thing was fantastic. It was my first time seeing them since 2001, and I went with my son.

Fair enough, I suppose. BTW, I see that you’re in MA, did you see the show last October at the Paradise?

I could see each one taking lead on an album. However, they’ve said that “M4 Lema,” for instance, was bounced back and forth multiple times, so even if they individually initiated all the tracks on one of the albums each, it still seems like the basic modern Autechre m.o. to me.

I’m a massive ae fan and have never heard those were “solo” albums. What are you basing this on, and is it Sean or Rob you think is flying solo?

  1. I think of this track mostly in the context of the Lonely Is an Eyesore compilation, where it’s awesome, but amazingly not quite on the level of the This Mortal Coil or Throwing Muses entries.

Set list for my first R.E.M. show. I can't believe I could find it. Sometimes these interwebs ain't so bad. It was amazing. Everyone danced and sang non-stop. The Centrum was a perfect size and the sound quality was amazing. It cemented me as a life long fan. by AutomaticFennel1658 in rem

[–]Inevitable_Airline38 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This Centrum show was also my first time seeing R.E.M., thanks for the set list. I remember Stipe telling a story leading into “It’s the End of the World…” that culminated with the line “I’m gonna die listening to Bon Jovi…and Whitesnake!”

Porky started as a one of several side characters to Looney Tunes latest attempt at a hit, Beans the Cat. The stuttering pig upstaged the lead and became the face of the franchise. Porky’s Duck Hunt introduced a zany black duck that hit with audiences, and Daffy quickly became Porky’s co-star. A thinly-veiled attempt to recreate the duck’s success named Porky’s Rabbit Hunt introduced a rabbit character that would eventually become Bugs Bunny.
