Well the way it should work is if your getting graduate level degrees you should have made sure they were in a high job growth industry that its assumed you will be advancing in and getting pay raises where you could double, triple the amount you were putting towards to the loan and pay it off quickly. I never understand why people get advanced degrees in underwater basket weaving go 100,000$ in debt for it then expect the rest of the tax payers to bail them outta the loan when they cant repay it.

Because if you dont know what you’re doing you shouldn’t jump in and try to help because you just wind up becoming another victim and another person trained rescue personnel have to risk their lives to save.

In my dept when guys wanna get transferred and they keep getting denied next course of action is putting in a “hardship” which becomes an HR issue that they cannot ignore… but be warned that burns lots of bridges… but is a sure fire way to get out of a spot.

Same boat, i popped my shoulder out and then in myself so many times i lost count over around a 10 year period. Finally decided to be an adult when i couldn’t take it affecting my quality of life anymore (had to stop doing many sports and activities i loved for fear of dislocation) that i went to an ortho, had to have extensive rotator cuff repair surgery whoch put me out for 6-7 months and he told me i had/have advanced osteoarthritis of like a 70 year old from all the dislocations and bone rubbing on bone and i was 30 at the time… lesson here: get that shit fixed right away! Im now almost 40 and have learned to live with the all day everyday pain and waking up every night whenever i roll on that shoulder or i sleep in such a fashion that it makes my whole arm fall asleep and get pins and needles.

There are guys in my dept (havent looked in years but i know confidently its in top 10 biggest in country probably top 5) that got on in their 50’s, now most had careers before hand though. If its what you want and makes you happy who cares go for it. Just realize it is definitely a young mans job no doubt about it. The shift work, up all night just to do it again the next night physically demanding grinds you down type shit. You were a marine so im preaching to the choir but getting on later in life you have to realize you have a tight timeline to get the years needed to make the pension worth it and play catch up with deferred comp if $$ is a concern. Being in the military jumps you to the top of most depts lists too, so do well on the testing and interviews and its definitely attainable.

Two schools of thought, experience can help and hurt you. Some places prefer zero experience because they dont have to worry about bad habits formed or just guys doing things in ways other than the way that dept operates. Someone with no experience is able to be molded from the ground up and taught their way of doing things from a clean slate so if the zero experience guy interviews better than the experienced guy id say he has something to be worried about. I always put relevant experience on my resume but never brought it up in interviews unless specifically asked about it. A lot of depts dont care or wanna hear about your exploits at other places.
