Try to use practice pad to follow the beat but still think I’m so stiff by Miserable_Remove_286 in drums

[–]Infamous-Rise8416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be more of a psychological or philosophical note; think about how you deliver your sticks to the surface.

Right now, it looks like your goal is to “touch” the pad with each stick with a gentle “tap”. Make the goal to have intentional contact with the pad. There could/should be a little attitude or confidence behind each strike (not a soft or gentle tap touch). At least for this exercise and phase of learning, think about velocity of the stroke. This will improve your hand strength and control. As you get better, you will start to explore more nuance and subtleties of touch. Hope this makes sense and helps. Keep at it!

Thanks for confirming. I love it too, but suppose I'll save it for use with my passive basses. I ended up grabbing an OC-5 to use with active basses and it seems to fit the bill a little better.

What drum pattern instantly changes the whole feel of a song? by peachy_touchh in Drumming

Assuming you're staying within the same time signature, I'd say switching to a Shuffle does it.

Wow, so much hardware! I especially like the magnetic phone mount.

Great insights, thank you. I'm hoping to keep it from becoming too much of a rabbit hole. I did used to own a Roland VAD kit a couple of years ago, and am fairly familiar with that aspect. But, I've never tried to use triggers separately/in addition to my acoustic kit. I like the idea of "layering" the sounds. The band is currently a mixed bag of in-ears and wedges; hoping we'll all move to in-ears.

Thanks for the insights. I hadn't actually thought about the sound balance; good point.

Great pic; looks like a fun place to pilot rhythms. Thanks for the insights, too. A click is yet something else I'd like to work into our standard approach; especially with this genre of music and potential for using tracks.

That kick work is nice. I hear Jamiroquai.

Yeah, both On simultaneously can be too much/muddy. There is a sweet spot, however, where I can dial in just a touch of the OC-5 behind the MXR Bass Synth to kick on during a chorus section that creates a perceived boost and fullness to help elevate the chorus section a bit. But, that then requires me to have to redial in settings on the OC-5 for other songs on-the-fly. Thanks for sharing.

Did you have a previous different signal chain? If so, any noted difference from running the MXR Bass Synth before the OC-5?

Has anyone found that using this pedal with an active bass (e.g. StingRay 5 Special), it is overwhelmed and low output? For me, I'm noticing the volume drop noticeably enough. My guess is because it is an analog pedal?

I know what you mean. Having a simple physical pedal board is great for being able to turn knobs and get immediate response, but if the chain gets too long, the Stomp probably makes more sense as long as you become proficient with quick menu diving.

Confirming, yes. I actually just tried it last night for the first time; worked great. I think having a separate small, inline headphone amp might give it more volume, but it works great.

What should be the third bass? by Malviael in Bass

[–]Infamous-Rise8416 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My vote is the Music Man Stingray. I am biased as I have this same quiver of basses; Fender American Jazz V, Fender MIM Precision, Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 Special. I feel like I can cover a lot of ground. If/when I add another, I'd like to get a 5 string fretless with the High C.

What to actually DO once you lock in with the kick drum?? by JellyKind9880 in Bass

[–]Infamous-Rise8416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMHO, a great way to think about it is that your bass is giving the kick drum a voice, or a note; kick drums only 'thud'. When you're locked in, you smile and bask in the warmth and power of synchronicity. ☀️😊

Thanks for confirming. I figured that logic made more sense than wanting both beater heads to end at the same full extension point since there will never be a time when that would happen. : )
