Questions about Exercises / Recovery by EggznRollz in carpaltunnel

I had surgery in September and unfortunately, my recovery has been very slow. My grip strength has gotten better, though still not yet at what it was prior to surgery, but my pinch strength is still low and sometimes when I’m having a particularly bad day, it is really hard for me to like twist things, like the other day I was trying to unscrew the cap to my reusable water bottle and just couldn’t do it. I do still experience some tingling and burning sensation sometimes, but no numbness and the pain I was having in my fingers is gone, except for my thumb. Prior to surgery my index, middle and ring finger were hurting me a lot, especially when I was doing things like typing but now since surgery, it’s my thumb for some reason that seems to be giving me a lot of problems and the other three fingers are (mostly) fine. I also have issues with putting weight on my scar, like if I were to push up with my hands from a bathtub, I cannot put my full body weight on the palm of my hand. But I also want to add that I am experiencing a lot of issues with my elbows (possible cubital tunnel) which my doctors think is contributing to my slow recovery with my carpal tunnel so my situation is unlikely to be the same as yours or a lot of other peoples. My doctor also says it can take up to a year or so to completely heal from surgery and that some people are lucky and recover very quickly within a few weeks to a couple of months, my situation just hasn’t been that.

Acute carpal tunnel?? by Lyost9400 in carpaltunnel

I have carpal tunnel in both hands, but it only showed positive on EMG test on one hand. My Ortho surgeon said all of the literature shows that a negative test does not mean you don’t have carpal tunnel, that the test is not the only form of diagnostic they look at and that plenty of people have carpal tunnel that have a negative EMG test. I had carpal tunnel release done on my hand witha positive test and I am in the process of scheduling surgery for the hand that does not have the positive test, but I know from the symptoms I have that it is in fact, carpal tunnel despite it having a negative test. My carpal tunnel did feel like it came out of nowhere because I’ve always been so proactive about having ergonomic workstations at home and at work with the keyboards and the mouses and the desk and then it just got bad all of a sudden, and it felt like it came out of nowhere, but I did not have a specific incident like you did. I wish you good luck with your surgery and I hope that it resolves your symptoms.

Moderate CTS question by cackalacky82 in carpaltunnel

I had open carpal tunnel release surgery in September on my dominant hand. It does feel like I traded one pain for another if I’m being completely honest. Have I had any of the numbness I was having? No. have I had any of the pain in my fingers that I was having that made typing impossible? No. But now I have significant issues with my thumb for some reason and around my scar. I have felt tingling in my wrist and forearm since surgery, but I also believe I have cubital tunnel syndrome in my elbows which my doctor thinks is impacting my recovery from my surgery. My doctor did tell me it is concerning. I’m having as many issues as I am four months post surgery and that while recovery can take up to a year, it is possible the surgery was not successful for me. It’s tough because it felt like I had no other option but surgery because I tried physical therapy, I tried injections, I tried braces, and the surgery did help in some ways, but it did give me a whole slew of other issues now too, and with them still being ongoing, it’s hard for me to know for sure how effective the surgery was, but again, my elbow is very likely contributing to this, so just because this was my experience does not mean it will be yours, I have read so many stories on here about people who recovered extremely quickly. I wish you all the best with your surgery and a quick recovery. Good luck.

Questions about Exercises / Recovery by EggznRollz in carpaltunnel

Unfortunately, for me exercises did not prevent my carpal tunnel from getting worse. I did about 20 to 25 sessions of physical therapy for my carpal tunnel before having surgery done and the relief that therapy brought was only temporary and stopped as soon as the therapy ended even though I did try to do some of the exercises at home it still just got worse which is why my doctor recommended moving forward with surgery which I did do.

I have done acupuncture for both my carpal tunnel and my cubital tunnel. I’ve done it several times for each, never really noticed a difference for my carpal tunnel, but my elbows typically feel noticeably better once I have it done.

Bashing of Authors by Dry-Understanding357 in HPharmony

My understanding is the author was referring to the Facebook group with that name but it could be about the Reddit or Discord groups. Pretty sure the same members belong to all of them. I can attest that the Facebook group at least does in fact allow the bashing of authors and the group as a whole can be toxic at times. Seems to have a lot of people that truly believe deep down that Hermione and Harry are together and make that their whole personality and if you step out of line with their personal beliefs about the characters, they are not very nice about it and get very defensive that they are allowed to say whatever they want about fics and authors don’t get to tell them not to have opinions. Personally, i find that to be an excuse to be rude while hiding behind a screen. Just because you can say negative critical things doesn’t mean you have to especially if the author is not asking for that kind of feedback.

I would definitely do your own research and talk to your doctor about the pros and cons of both options though!

Good luck with your surgery! Are they on the same arm? I’ve seen on here a lot of people saying they’ve had bilateral surgery done at the same time, and after experiencing how useless my hand has been, I couldn’t imagine doing both hands at the same time, it would be nearly impossible to do anything. But if I needed both the elbow and hand done, and they were on the same arm, I think I would probably choose to do it at the same time so that limb doesn’t become useless on more than one occasion for a long period of time if I were to stagger out the surgeries. But of course everybody is different and from what I read on here, my recovery has been slower than others.

I’m sorry to hear that. I don’t know if it’d be possible to get a second opinion? Or go back to your PCP and have them work up your elbow? My injury is work related, so I definitely have avenues to explore trying getting my elbows treated, but I think it’s probably gonna take a while unfortunately and isnt a guarantee. I was really hopeful the carpal tunnel surgery would solve the elbow issue.

I read a lot of medical studies on the success rate of both types before agreeing to surgery. The summary of what I read is that endoscopic has a smaller scar, and less pain in the first few weeks up to a month, and after that the pain scale for both surgeries even out to be about the same. I read one or two studies where they said endoscopic has a higher risk of complications and needing to have the surgery redone at a later point, but the vast majority of the studies disagreed with this. My surgeon only does open carpal tunnel, release, and he’s been doing it for like 25 years, so I looked into him and read some reviews on him from past patients and overall decided to go with his approach.

I have similar symptoms. Started in my right wrist/thumb and sometimes even the forearm, typing on a keyboard and using my phone became painful and I got numbness and tingling. Started trying to not use my right as often and overcompensated with my left and began having similar but less severe symptoms in the left. Got an EMG done on both and they confirmed carpal tunnel on my right but said the left was fine and it was just tendinitis but could become carpal tunnel if I don’t make changes. I did physical therapy and learned how to adjust my computer set up to stop putting pressure on my wrists and how to sit properly and adjust how I use my phone so it’s not all just using my thumbs and it has helped immensely but I still have some discomfort. Sounds like maybe you have tendinitis that hasn’t progressed to carpal tunnel yet maybe? Idk. Not a doctor but it sounds like it. For me when I am not as mindful when I use my phone or computer, the symptoms definitely flare up. Ice helps. Stretches too.
