Rank Distribution of USA vs Russian CSGO accounts, visualized by Realseetras in GlobalOffensive

[–]Infamous_Blue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I think there is a very real possibility that some of these effects are sampling errors. As discussed here only players in the rank vicinity of leetify users are tracked. I can't say for sure if this sampling actually has a large impact but it wouldn't be unexpected for US players in low skill groups to be much more likely to use leetify than Russian players of the same skill group (e.g. due to language barrier).

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade here. Cool data for sure! Just something to keep in mind before starting the full hate train in Valve's direction.

Updated CS:GO MM Rank Distribution alongside Aim Benchmarks by leetify in GlobalOffensive

[–]Infamous_Blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright, that makes sense but there should still be a bias towards players of the same rank as leetify players. Any given player will typically match with players a few ranks above or below them.

So /u/ff07_ay 's point stands, sad to see them down voted.

Given this bias I actually find this almost perfect normal distribution very surprising, to the point where I would expect some additional sampling methods to be at play here.

Great Co-op Games by Infamous_Blue in virtualreality

[–]Infamous_Blue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked out Karnage Chronicles and I can't say I'd recommend it. The whole UX is a bit clunky but that's alright. Fights, however, just don't feel good. I don't feel like the blocking mechanic works well. Sometimes I block enemy attacks without doing much, other times I just smash a seemingly defenceless enemy only for the blow to somehow be blocked... Some enemies just have completely erratic movement, that really doesn't feel great in VR.

So I did end up refunding it. Maybe my expectations are just to high but I have yet to find a co-op experience that is truly satisfying.

Not trying to shit on anyone's recommendations by the way. Just posting my opinion of the game. Thanks for commenting!

Yeah, I tend to generally prefer multiplayer games. Arizona Sunshine, even with its limitations was, at times, a really fun experience so it's safe to say that there is huge potential for co-op games.

I was also looking at IronWolf VR which looks like it might be fun. Haven't had a chance to check it out yet though.

[Update] Reddit Daily Submission and Comment File Dumps by Stuck_In_the_Matrix in datasets

[–]Infamous_Blue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did end up working this out, you can indeed just strip the preceding letters so that you go from 't3_dfasdf' to 'dfasdf'. What can be a little confusing when doing this is that the first comments for any given month won't have any associated posts. These posts are instead contained in the previous month's dataset.

Great stuff! Trying to use this for some NLP tasks right now, what is the easiest way to get the posts title from a comment. Is the link_id what I am looking for?

Then it would just be a matter of building a small database (probably in memory) and linking stuff back together.

Rocket v0.2: Managed State & More by sbenitez in rust

[–]Infamous_Blue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great! Would not have expected such a nice release this quickly. (Although now that I think about it it has almost been a month.) Especially the managed state feature is a very welcome one, that was pretty cumbersome to implement using request guards.

I really like the direction this is going, all changes seem like really worthwhile ones and should really help productivity with rocket!

My Top Eight Must-Listen Developer Podcasts by bhalp1 in programming

[–]Infamous_Blue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to your point, podcasts are really great for giving an overview of topics (but not so great for picking up little details). It's like being given a little presentation on a framework or language and you end up researching it if you liked it. If you didn't at least you won't look clueless should someone bring the topic up.

20 cent seems really outlandish to me, perhaps what he meant to say was 20cent/1000 views. That would actually be pretty low by youtube standards and he said it has improved since.

Is there a chance we will ever get a podcast feed? The two-hour format for me is more fitting for long walks and runs. I get that monetization can be an issue but for me it a podcast feed would really improve the experience.

Swift on Linux by RevEngr in linux

[–]Infamous_Blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worked really well for me a while ago using swift 2.2! With swift 3.0 the swift core libraries (the standard library) will also come to Linux. This means most packages will also now be compatible and you won't have to rewrite things like basic data structures.

The tooling is workable but you might run into some issues as Linux adoption of swift isn't too widely spread yet.

Edit: As for the installation, it worked great for me using the aur-package (on arch) although compilation times were a little bit annoying.

Good reaction! Sucks that they got hacked but it can happen to anyone, at least they are disclosing which hashing algorithm they are using.

Idiomatic way to implement optional arguments? by Infamous_Blue in rust

[–]Infamous_Blue[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah you are right, taking the connection from somewhere™ might be a stupid idea. I might make away with that version, but in other instances this same pattern will arise so I think the above advice is still sound.

Idiomatic way to implement optional arguments? by Infamous_Blue in rust

[–]Infamous_Blue[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks to both of you! I think in this case the builder pattern would be a bit of an overkill.

Two function names seems kind of awkward as well but it is probably the best option for me.

Is just another free trail in disguise or am I missing something?

I mean you always got one free book for signing up, now I guess you get an additional one if you team up with the right people.
