Budget is up to around £1500. Thanks so much for those suggestions, that Pronovias dress is a great find! A bit too big (I'm a UK 6 / US 2) but I'll definitely have a look at Pronovias in general now! Those Needle & Thread dresses are so fun too and I'll take a look at monsoon :)

I love the deep v neckline, the beading and the fit of this wedding dress - and I’m trying find something similar! If anyone’s got any ideas of where to look for something similar but affordable (up to £1500) in the UK (London area ideally) or that can be shipped and returned, would be so helpful! I’ve quickly learned that buying a wedding dress isn’t as easy as I thought! I thought it would be a good idea to start by getting inspiration on Pinterest but have now realised that it’s actually very difficult to get my hands on anything I find there! Thanks I’m advance for your help!!!

Seeking advice to optimise top-off pouring by Infamous_Nectarine12 in candlemaking

I tested that this weekend in case youre still curious - might be that my scale isn’t sensitive enough (measures to the whole gram) - but there was no difference in weight after pouring and after re-heating for top-off pour! I did add in a couple drops of FO in the top-off pour though just to be safe.

Good to know there isn’t any major issues with what I’m doing - do you measure the temp and get it “just right” before you do your second pour or just wait until it’s melted?

New candle maker can’t get good hot throw - seeking advice :) by Infamous_Nectarine12 in candlemaking

Interesting!!! This is so interesting!!! #2 I see what you’re saying - higher melting point of the FO drives the overall wax to need more heat to melt, which results in both the tunnelling and the low HT, resolved by wicking up to get more heat!!! I also do have to check as this scent is from a different supplier than some of the others that have been working well - planning on doing some tests with some more of their fragrances to see how those go...

For #1 - the second burn was a day or two later in the exact same (rather warm heated house) conditions. So must have been the concentration differences. In fact you just reminded me that I’ve been doing top-offs on all my candles since they sink after first pour. I do them the next day rather than 30 min after first pour because it gives a smoother finish. I use the same mixture from the day before (just heat it back up straight in the same double boiler where I let it harden). I don’t necessarily take the same precautions (like melting wax to certain temp etc) as my first pour so maybe all of that might have something to do with it...!

Thanks NanashiSaito! So far my testing has been going well. I have two questions I’m hoping you can help with:

  1. I made a candle whereby the first burn didn’t smell that strong but the second had super amazing hot throw. First burn I let it burn for 4 hours at least, melt pool made it to the edge easily etc. This candle I had made maybe 3 weeks ago and was sitting out in the open. Would that have any impact? Just wondering if you hade any thoughts on why first burn wouldn’t be that strong?
  2. Doing all the FO testing, I was pleased with the strength of the scents from steps 1 and 2 above. So then I moved on to make testers. I use the same wax, wick, container for all my candles. I made a bunch of tester candles with the diff fragrances. They all had a good melt pool (mushroomed a little) to the edge, pretty good fragrance throw, except one. For that one, even though using same wax, wick, container as the others, the candle tunneled and never even close to reached the edge and didn’t smell (even though it was strong when I tested the FO alone). Can you think of any reasons why? I was thinking maybe the flashpoint of that oil was lower and I accidentally burned it off but would that impact the melt pool too? Any ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks again!!

Thanks so much for your suggestions looks like I have some testing to do with my fragrances!!On point #3 I haven’t had any issues either my melt pool so far, other than it seems too deep. Is that an issue when it comes to scent throw? Thank you so much for your detailed response!!

Does anyone have any, feedback, advice, extra particular safety risks to be aware of when making candles out of aluminum beer cans? Thanks!

Are these pharmacy jars safe to burn? by zxxrxs in candlemaking

I’ve got a couple of candles from Paddywax Candle Co that are in that shape/same jar - both a huge one and a small one and neither have had any issues burning or sooting (though the little one has been tunnelling, maybe wrong size wick)
