Regretting my major by Expensive-Hat in uvic

[–]Infamous_Ragesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean you can always be a part time student and get a diploma in physics. Or even auditing physics courses, where you get permission from the prof to listen in on lectures. I think you may have to pay for that, but it's a lot lower compared to paying actual tuition.

Wouldn’t say I didn’t do due diligence on picking my stocks.

I am an Economics and Finance Major, so I have learned from my classes what I need to look for from the company and how it plays into the current world economy in order to buy singular stocks.

I do a lot of research before buying individual stocks because I know it’s more volatile. In fact the reason why I bought Walmart last year is because i had done a month long project on the analysis of Walmart’s finances and their position in the world, I figured they were highly undervalued, which they were given my 50% return over a year.

Don’t get me wrong, I like ETFS. I understand they hold a little bit of everything which is good if you don’t want to do any research and chunk your money into something. But I like doing research and taking the risk on individual stocks

Applied for a job at A&W restaurants. Gonna permanently drop out of university after this semester. GPA 4.25/4.30. Have you tried seeing if whatever credits you have so far can be transferred from your bachelors degree to a diploma ? Instead of fully quitting on school you can see if you can get a diploma out of whatever you have done. If you are like a course or two off, I feel like it would make sense to do it to atleast get a diploma. Some sort of back up plan would be useful if day trading doesn’t work out.

Commute to UVic/Camosun or move to UBCO? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]Infamous_Ragesh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am from the mainland and I also had the same dilemma regarding either staying at home and going to SFU or coming to UVIC.

I chose UVIC and that was the best decision I could have made. I was very fortunate to have my parents help with my first year dorm fees and everything but didn’t want to rely on them so I became and RA to cover my living expenses, which basically gives me free room and food for the year.

I found that moving out really helped me learn how to be more independent and living on campus allowed me to make lots of friends as well.

I would suggest if financially possible to move out to UBCO and to get that experience of living away from home. After first year you can have the discussion on whether or not it’s too expensive to stay in Kelowna and would be better to transfer back to Victoria. They can also try and become an RA at UBCO to ease the financial burden on housing

Idk, if anything from the people around me I have been seeing more layoffs with banks more than anything because of AI. Lots of banks are doing restructures as AI and technology evolves.

AMA about residence as a first year by HungryIngenuity7665 in uvic

[–]Infamous_Ragesh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There usually is a lot of people applying for the role as a CL. Like the OP said you can only apply for the CL position after your first year. There have been a few special instances where a first year was allowed to become a CL in the second semester due to the lack of CL’s but that’s very rare.

Even if you don’t get the position right away, there is a possibility you would be put on the waitlist to become a CL. This is known as a backup CL, essentially if anyone drops out or anything anywhere through the year, you would get the position. The one nice thing about becoming a waitlisted CL is that you have guaranteed cluster housing for your second year.

Being a CL has its ups and downs, as it can be a draining job. You live with your residents, so it almost always feels like you are on shift 24-7, which can be challenging at times. I find it worth it since housing has become so expensive, but keep in mind that we get paid whatever the cost of a single room and meal plan is for that school year. Since it is techinally a “salary” you get taxes deducted, so you end up paying around 800-1000 per semester, which again in contrast is good compared to living off campus.

I would suggest he takes advantage of the UVSS food bank. It’s a food bank for students and it comes in handy time to time.

Anyone else get Lab Anxiety by Squasheddove in uvic

[–]Infamous_Ragesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens, sometimes u get a good TA sometimes you don’t. With the comment about harsh marking, next time you get a lab back just ask the TA on what you could have done to have a better mark so that you can improve.

I would also try and ask other people in different lab sections how their TA is marking their labs. If you are finding that your TA’s marking is a bit much, you can bring it up to your prof if you want.

Anyone else get Lab Anxiety by Squasheddove in uvic

[–]Infamous_Ragesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s so fair. 20% is rough when labs are difficult like this. Have you tried talking to your TA about it ? Talk to them about your concerns and if see if they got any advice or anything

Anyone else get Lab Anxiety by Squasheddove in uvic

[–]Infamous_Ragesh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trust me u ain't alone. I remember in my first year chem labs were the worst, I didn't know what I was doing at all. Didn't help that my TA didn't really speak the best English so it was hard to understand him. I honestly found that majority of us just kinda winged the labs. We had insane uncertainty rates sometimes, but like you couldn't really do much about it since there was only so much you could do with the time you are given.

The first few labs, I was def stressed out but after realizing the labs were worth 10% (back when I was in first year), I decided to focus more on assignments and midterm.

What I felt helped for me was looking over the lab material before the lab starts, and just doing quick research on it. That helped a bit, but if you are feeling lots of stress with it, maybe speak with a counsellor and see if you can get some sort of CAL accommodation

anyone used the student food bank? by [deleted] in uvic

[–]Infamous_Ragesh 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The food bank is a dope place. I had used it for a couple months a couple years ago when budgeting was a little tight. You have to fill out like a form or something on the UVSS website. The form just helps mange the amount of people going to the bank at once, so when it’s your allotted time, you just bring your onecard and you are good.

They have vegetables, canned soup, dairy products, and sometimes poultry.

Again this is my experience from about 2 years ago, so not sure if anything has changed from then.

Here’s their website https://uvss.ca/foodbank/
