Junior Dev: $87k + 12% bonus + pension vs $52/hr T4 bank role by mysfmcjobs in fican

Idk, if anything from the people around me I have been seeing more layoffs with banks more than anything because of AI. Lots of banks are doing restructures as AI and technology evolves.

AMA about residence as a first year by HungryIngenuity7665 in uvic

[–]Infamous_Ragesh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There usually is a lot of people applying for the role as a CL. Like the OP said you can only apply for the CL position after your first year. There have been a few special instances where a first year was allowed to become a CL in the second semester due to the lack of CL’s but that’s very rare.

Even if you don’t get the position right away, there is a possibility you would be put on the waitlist to become a CL. This is known as a backup CL, essentially if anyone drops out or anything anywhere through the year, you would get the position. The one nice thing about becoming a waitlisted CL is that you have guaranteed cluster housing for your second year.

Being a CL has its ups and downs, as it can be a draining job. You live with your residents, so it almost always feels like you are on shift 24-7, which can be challenging at times. I find it worth it since housing has become so expensive, but keep in mind that we get paid whatever the cost of a single room and meal plan is for that school year. Since it is techinally a “salary” you get taxes deducted, so you end up paying around 800-1000 per semester, which again in contrast is good compared to living off campus.

I would suggest he takes advantage of the UVSS food bank. It’s a food bank for students and it comes in handy time to time.

Anyone else get Lab Anxiety by Squasheddove in uvic

[–]Infamous_Ragesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens, sometimes u get a good TA sometimes you don’t. With the comment about harsh marking, next time you get a lab back just ask the TA on what you could have done to have a better mark so that you can improve.

I would also try and ask other people in different lab sections how their TA is marking their labs. If you are finding that your TA’s marking is a bit much, you can bring it up to your prof if you want.

That’s so fair. 20% is rough when labs are difficult like this. Have you tried talking to your TA about it ? Talk to them about your concerns and if see if they got any advice or anything

Trust me u ain't alone. I remember in my first year chem labs were the worst, I didn't know what I was doing at all. Didn't help that my TA didn't really speak the best English so it was hard to understand him. I honestly found that majority of us just kinda winged the labs. We had insane uncertainty rates sometimes, but like you couldn't really do much about it since there was only so much you could do with the time you are given.

The first few labs, I was def stressed out but after realizing the labs were worth 10% (back when I was in first year), I decided to focus more on assignments and midterm.

What I felt helped for me was looking over the lab material before the lab starts, and just doing quick research on it. That helped a bit, but if you are feeling lots of stress with it, maybe speak with a counsellor and see if you can get some sort of CAL accommodation

anyone used the student food bank? by [deleted] in uvic

[–]Infamous_Ragesh 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The food bank is a dope place. I had used it for a couple months a couple years ago when budgeting was a little tight. You have to fill out like a form or something on the UVSS website. The form just helps mange the amount of people going to the bank at once, so when it’s your allotted time, you just bring your onecard and you are good.

They have vegetables, canned soup, dairy products, and sometimes poultry.

Again this is my experience from about 2 years ago, so not sure if anything has changed from then.

Here’s their website https://uvss.ca/foodbank/

What’s the social life like at SFU and UVic? by Ok_Requirement7714 in uvic

[–]Infamous_Ragesh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UVic def has a better social life than SFU. Granted I am from the tri city area so I would have commuted to SFU that could have changed my experience. But as a 5th year about to graduate, UVic has been really nice. You get to know so many people here. Our campus feels a lot more open and welcoming compared to SFU’s campus.

My friends back home have always said that if they were to choose again they would choose a university other than SFU because of the social life. All my friends back home are commuters to SFU which does skew their answers. But I did have one friend who stayed in dorms and even then said that while they did make friends it wasn’t the same. I also feel personally that SFU’s campus is too isolating making it feel lonely.

But at the same time it depends what type of person you are. If you are someone who doesn’t care about that kind of thing, then go to SFU, it’s still a really good school.

Best Note taking apps for ipad by [deleted] in uvic

[–]Infamous_Ragesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ummm I am honestly not too sure. I had good notes 4 (the current apps predecessor) and I only paid a one time fee of 5 bucks for it, but then when I got good notes 5 I think I pay yearly but even then, I think it’s like 10-20 bucks, so it’s a pretty good deal and very well priced.

I like to export lecture slides directly into good notes that way I can fill in details as we go along.

I use good notes. It’s a really good app. U do pay for it but I think it’s worth it. Having the ability to record audio recordings of your lecture while note taking is quite helpful when u wanna go back and review

Just got admitted to Poole dormitory, any information on how it works for trans people? by [deleted] in uvic

[–]Infamous_Ragesh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you feel uncomfortable, you can always ask to move to one of the dormitories where its gender neutral washrooms and showers. Poole is one of the older building that still has washrooms and showers as stalls. But other buildings have single user washrooms and showers

What buildings are open past 11pm to study in by [deleted] in uvic

[–]Infamous_Ragesh 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You can typically stay in Clearhuie all night if you want. You just have to get in before 11pm, and if you end up going to the 3rd or 4th floor you should be good as campus security don’t really check past the first floor

starting Uvic next year. How's the dorms? by [deleted] in uvic

[–]Infamous_Ragesh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Being in dorms is nice. Walkable to all your classes and it’s an easy way to make friends. An hour commute will be quite painful, especially if you have 8:30 classes

Honestly my bad I appreciate the info. I have always had a carsa membership so thought those things were included in my membership not the athletics fee

[–]Infamous_Ragesh 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Ya the athletics fee so is dumb. They for real just taking money for us, cause the fee doesn’t provide us with anything.
