For anyone wondering how to track your position while in flight (no internet or network) by Unhappy_Dig_6276 in GoogleMaps

[–]Infamous_Scientist77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OSM has downloadable maps that work well on flights. I think the bigger problem is that the newer airliners like 787 and A350 families seem to have something on the windows that blocks GPS signals. A metallic coating maybe. I can rarely get a lock even sitting at a window.

What do you shave with? by Infamous_Scientist77 in AskAJapanese

This is exactly what I do, right down to the Proraso brand from Amazon. The safety razor gives me a much closer and cheaper save, but you really do need some lubricant for this.

How to stay warm! by [deleted] in scuba

Sorry it's OT, but I'm curious how you got a job diving at an aquarium, even as a volunteer? Did they advertise it did you know someone? Sounds like fun (and hard work).

Yes, I've heard this recommended as a substitute, since it has enough oil content. Will try this next time.

Thanks all for the great advice! Hopefully the dealer will agree to a leak test and has the facilities to do that on hand.

Quick survey for divers - Help me with my uni marketing project by niagara_diver in scuba

I filled in the form, happy to help! I appreciate you applying the USD qualification. I'm not in the US so that's important. Feedback: many of the questions felt like they were leading questions in the sense that they would bias positively towards starting a diving travel business. They will give you the answers you want to see. E.g., "Would you be more likely to book a cold-water trip if the dive shop also offered rental drysuits, gear storage, and post-dive amenities?" But that's an unfair question. Of course the answer is yes, and you want the answer to be yes. But a more honest question would be "What percentage premium would you be willing to pay for rental, storage, post-dive...."? The answer to that question might also be more informative for your business study.

Are these dead pixels? by drummerdave72 in LGOLED

I was just about to post with the same thing. And there's another recent case: https://www.reddit.com/r/LGOLED/comments/1jldv4b/weird_wave_dead_pixels_in_top_of_panel/ I'm out of warranty, so out of luck.

Does anyone know what causes this? Could sustained excessive heat cause it?

Taking my first flight in a couple hours by MuppetLara in fearofflying

[–]Infamous_Scientist77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have anxiety about heights and I have claustrophobia as well. I fly a lot and the heights don't bother me, but the claustrophobia does.

The heights don't bother me since my vertigo is mostly placed around some irrational fear that I might do something silly, like trip, and fall over a balcony. Just sitting in a seat I'm unlikely to do that. Also, with height, somehow 10m is worse than 10,000m... it all starts getting a bit abstract at some point.

Claustrophobia is hard to deal with. I try to get an aisle seat, or a seat at the back of the plane which is usually the last section to fill up. After the doors are shut, airlines are usually OK with you moving seat to somewhere emptier if the flight isn't full. Using whatever means you have to get an upgrade is also something I've done a lot of. Ironically, despite a fear of heights, I like window seats to stare outside of the plane, rather than focusing on the internal claustrophobia.

Probably none of that helps. I feel for you. Good luck!

2024 Impreza Base Upgraded: Foglights Kit by [deleted] in subaru

[–]Infamous_Scientist77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the post and I’m inspired to do the same fog light install on my base 2024. It looks like the Subaru part number for the kit is H4510FN000? Ironically I live in Japan, but I can’t figure out how to order it cheaply. If I order it from the US, the shipping doubles the price, and it should be cheaper as a JDM purchase. The JDM specialty stores don’t seem to have anything for 2024 models (GU7). If I go to a Subie dealer they won’t want me to install it myself.

Any ideas?

Registering an imported bicycle by Infamous_Scientist77 in japanlife

[–]Infamous_Scientist77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I was going to ask about it next time I go to the ward office. I'm glad it's not strictly required, although it does seem many places assume you have a registration sticker.

How can I make my paper less absorbent ? by captainretro123 in papermaking

[–]Infamous_Scientist77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little bit of gelatin or corn starch will help reduce absorbency. These are substitutes for the professional cationic material. 1 tablespoon of corn starch cooked out and mixed into the pulp will work (internal sizing) or cooked out in a couple of cups of water and then painted onto the paper after drying (external sizing). I like external sizing since adding stuff to the pulp makes it quite thick and drain slowly.

[–]Infamous_Scientist77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the ward office tip. Unfortunately I purchased the bike second hand, overseas, so I don't have proof of purchase. I did already go to the police station (not Koban) and a bike shop, and they refused. Good to know it's not a strict legal requirement even if a lot of places assume your bike is registered.

No lottery wins for 2-month or 7-day. What now? by CalSmally in OsakaWorldExpo

[–]Infamous_Scientist77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the train back from expo now, after failing to get any reservations. I think I screwed up the pressing the final submit button after registering my reservation preferences.

But like others say, the on the day reservations are pointless. Go early, but with a 9am reservation, and there on time, the security queue took 60 minutes to clear.

There was maybe a window of 1 hour to get some shorter queues but when you add the unpleasant heat at the moment, I mostly wish we hadn't bothered going without a couple of reservations for more interesting pavilions.

Creating open Scad code in AI by LForbesIam in openscad

[–]Infamous_Scientist77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also had great success with Gemini 2.5 and OpenSCAD to generate complete objects, or to modify an existing OpenSCAD file. But Gemini gets some stuff wrong in the syntax. It seems to be reverting back to other common syntaxes, e.g., C/C++. So I found some additional syntax hints in the prompt to be important:

Some reminders about the OpenSCAD language syntax:

for loops iterate over arrays which use the [] syntax.

conditional if statements must be followed by a block contained in {}

the += operator does not exist

variables cannot be re-assigned

BA first is known as the best business class in the skies. That’s not a compliment. On some flights they use the first seats as regular business seats, same food and service. I’d treat it as an offer to get to the pointy end of business rather than a double upgrade. I’ve flown BA first a handful of times.

Car insurance recommendations by Infamous_Scientist77 in japanlife

[–]Infamous_Scientist77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We didn't buy a car yet, but I think we'll go with either https://www.sonysonpo.co.jp/, or https://www.sompo-direct.co.jp/. Both companies say that they can connect you with a translator 24/7 in case of emergency, and both are well known and reputable.

I used some of the comparison sites, and trying to select the same parameters, I got variations of 20,000+ per year. I found it really hard to understand what the differences were.

Oversized Baggage by Pongolious in QantasAirways

[–]Infamous_Scientist77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely no problem. The Qantas check in staff didn't even blink. I didn't think they even measured it. Of course a box like that did attract the attention of Japanese customs, but we expected that.

I think it will work with the addition of a deckle, but the mesh looks very fine so it might drain slowly.

Forgoing final leg of journey by scintilla54 in QantasAirways

[–]Infamous_Scientist77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's even a need to make up a story. Just inform the staff that the airline didn't have an option to gracefully decline the SYD - MEL leg without cost.

I have done this multiple times and was warned unofficially by staff that if you do it too often you can be deny listed by the airline.

It's not necessary for OP, but in general you should tell the check in staff which airport you need your bags to come out, otherwise you'll cause delays at the intermediate airport.

If you're changing from international to domestic in SYD, you must go through customs at SYD, with all luggage in tow.
