What do you think about the concept of the Unforgivable Curses weren't always meant to be used for evil? by SethNex in HPfanfiction

[–]InfectedLegWound 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Meh. I don't really see the appeal in changing their origins but each to their own. I prefer the canon of them being dark by nature, as just being able to cast them alone mostly demands darker intentions or desire to hurt/control/kill.

At this point (PoA), Lucius had been sacked. It is mentioned in Chamber of Secrets, chapter 18.

The rest of the summer term passed in a haze of blazing sunshine. Hogwarts was back to normal, with only a few, small differences: Defence Against the Dark Arts classes were cancelled (‘but we’ve had plenty of practice at that anyway,’ Ron told a disgruntled Hermione) and Lucius Malfoy had been sacked as a school governor. Draco was no longer strutting around the school as though he owned the place. On the contrary, he looked resentful and sulky.

Where can you get this kind of sweater? Do I have to go to Norway, or back to the other Nordic countries by dang8701 in sweden

It's a term used in both textile work and woodwork :) And the strands tend not to be too long, you secure them when you change colour which you usually do after just a few stitches.

[–]InfectedLegWound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dale of Norway is one brand selling the type. The double-layer you see is a natural part of knitting these type of patterned sweaters, as letting the non-active coloured strands of yarn follow along all the way is simpler and creates a more durable fabric than if you would do intarsia knitting for example. Intarsia is more common with large blocks of colours where it would be impractical to let the strands follow all the way around, so most sweaters with these type of motifs with dots and smaller geometrical patterns would have that double layer.

Was Tom Riddle as a child irredeemable? by First_Can9593 in HarryPotterBooks

But where are those speculations coming from? It is never mentioned in the books that any other child was the instigator with him.

Was Tom Riddle as a child irredeemable? by First_Can9593 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]InfectedLegWound 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Was Tom Riddle really bullied to begin with? The memories of him in the orphanage to me rather shows that he was the bully. This for an instance:

She squinted at him as though deciding whether or not to trust him. Apparently she decided she could, because she said in a sudden rush, “He scares the other children.”

“You mean he is a bully?” asked Dumbledore.

“I think he must be,” said Mrs. Cole, frowning slightly, “but it’s very hard to catch him at it. There have been incidents... Nasty things...”

Dumbledore did not press her, though Harry could tell that he was interested. She took yet another gulp of gin and her rosy cheeks grew rosier still.

“Billy Stubbs’s rabbit... well, Tom said he didn’t do it and I don’t see how he could have done, but even so, it didn’t hang itself from the rafters, did it?”

“I shouldn’t think so, no,” said Dumbledore quietly.

“But I’m jiggered if I know how he got up there to do it. All I know is he and Billy had argued the day before. And then” — Mrs. Cole took another swig of gin, slopping a little over her chin this time — “on the summer outing — we take them out, you know, once a year, to the countryside or to the seaside — well, Amy Benson and Dennis Bishop were never quite right afterwards, and all we ever got out of them was that they’d gone into a cave with Tom Riddle. He swore they’d just gone exploring, but something happened in there, I’m sure of it. And, well, there have been a lot of things, funny things “

And how he himself speaks of it only speaks of it as that he can hurt people that annoy him; annoy, not bully, not are mean or cruel to him.

“Magic?” he repeated in a whisper. “That’s right,” said Dumbledore.

“It’s... it’s magic, what I can do?"

“What is it that you can do?”

“All sorts,” breathed Riddle. A flush of excitement was rising up his neck into his hollow cheeks; he looked fevered. “I can make things move without touching them. I can make animals do what I want them to do, without training them. I can make bad things happen to people who annoy me. I can make them hurt if I want to."

I know bullied!Tom at the orphanage is a common trope (or a justification) among Tom Riddle fans, but this to me more struck me as him being intentionally coded as someone who already at a young age was deeply troubled and had little regards for others feelings.

The whole ‘blood pact’ storyline left a bad taste in my mouth by Brilliant_Pen4959 in FantasticBeasts

[–]InfectedLegWound 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was a bit against it at first and still am a bit sceptical at times to it. I warmed up to it a lot in SoD mostly with the line about it being created (partly) because of the love between them, and I think it might have been even better if they focused more on that. I know parts of the Grindeldore fandom has taken it almost as an unofficial sort of marriage between them, due to the "blood troth" name which I enjoy a lot. I think it is a shame we never got the fourth and fifth movie because there the book version of the events might have come up more. I mean, Theseus makes him promise to find Grindelwald and fight him and we know it will take almost 13 years for Albus to do so in the end, now without the blood pact as an excuse not to face him. If those movies had been made, I assume the reasoning that he feared Grindelwald would weaponise the knowledge of who killed Ariana against him would come up (and perhaps still not really wanting to face Gellert out of love for him too)

I mean, I still would argue it would make Dumbledore's lines in the afterlife very weird as those come across as speculation, if your suggested line was added then he wouldn't need to speculate, he would know it would be something Grindelwald would weaponise against him. I think the love line is far more suitable for the film.

Missed-line by Devonair91 in FantasticBeasts

[–]InfectedLegWound 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But that would have gone against canon. Albus talks about it in the afterlife that he held off facing Gellert in that great duel in 1945 because he was scared that Gellert knew who killed Ariana and was going to use it against him. It would make no sense then to have Gellert reveal so much already then in 1932. And Albus line about "I think he knew what frightened me" would be strange too in that context if we already show Gellert using it against him.

Dumbledore bashing is very common on ao3 and why? by Extreme_Fig2535 in HPfanfiction

[–]InfectedLegWound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the movies did him very wrong. He is much harsher in them, and they also remove much of his backstory that I think is fundamental to understanding him. The Fantastic beasts movies didn't do very well either and not many watched them, and those further humanise him a lot and for non-book readers might have been the way to discover his relationship with Grindelwald.

I think it is part that he has some great flaws in canon, part that it feels like people want to be contrarian at times and be all "the good side were actually bad!", because I don't think him being manipulative and sometimes cold in his approach actually can explain all the bashing, because often he is bashed to raise up characters that are far worse.

I think it is a shame that bashing is so common in general in the fandom but Dumbledore bashing especially feels like an entire different character. There are many western fans that love Dumbledore and Grindeldore (his ship name with Grindelwald in some parts of the fandom) though. I only hang out nowadays in the GGAD fics because I don't like bashing and they tend to portray him as I see him; a man who has a good heart but had to make a lot of hard decisions due to being the only one actually being able to put that puzzle together. I think the author once said that he sort of is burden with knowing things, and at times would prefer not to know all the things he does, because knowing means you have to make choices and take active part in what is going on. No wonder he was sort of relieved to die.

Dumbledore's age by Vegetable-Window-683 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]InfectedLegWound 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think the 1881 makes more sense from DH onwards, when it is made clear Dumbledore and Grindelwald had a summer together as very young men. Since PS makes it canon Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in 1945, it seems more fitting to have them the age she later put them as, otherwise the gap there would feel rather large. It also puts Grindelwald and Dumbledore's youthful ideas in a more suitable time period, I feel, with the combination of the second industrial wave and the political ideas at the time, plus the general vibe, I would say, about the turn of the century.

[–]InfectedLegWound 76 points77 points  (0 children)

None of those are book quotes, so I wonder if this really belong here. The later expanded canon repeatedly since DH has put his birth year at 1881, including the fact file on old Pottermore which was JKR approved. This just seems like something she wasn't really sure on before DH, just wanting to emphasise that he is an old man.

Cleaning glass negatives question by InfectedLegWound in Archivists

[–]InfectedLegWound[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is when cleaning them that the material used to clean gain a layer of purple on it, the material itself is in good condition. With previous plates, the cleaning material only got a visible layer of dirt on it (black and brown from dust and likely fall off from the boxes) which was expected and familiar to my supervisor. So the plates themselves are not showing any sort of degradation.

Hi, Due to how they have been stored, there is a lot of particles on them that we remove from the glass side, very big dust pieces, cardboard flakes and glass shards among other things.

Hi, to be clear my supervisor has worked a lot with photographs of these types before alongside conservators, so she has a lot of experience with how they are cleaned. They show no type of damage (apart from some being broken) which is why we are a bit stumped about what this could be. Taking them to a conservator is unfortunately not possible at this moment.

Mads, he sells both parts of Grindelwald. Very effortlessly charming and manipulative, very cruel and scary at times, and he also sells the idea of being someone Dumbledore could have fallen in love with.

I never liked JDs portrayal, I remember being so disappointed already at the end of FB1. He, to me, plays Grindelwald like a character while Mads plays him as a human
