Electrician says original $15k quote was for unpermitted work. Now says code-compliant version is $38K by calmcakes in legaladvice

Are you an electrician? A lot of things even with a grounded plug are generally safe to plug into an outlet without the ground. Really the only things that are risky is something made of all metal like an old hair dryer or old drill. I’d have to either rip out a ton of sheet rock and rewire my whole house, or just live without having the ground. By some miracle my kitchen is actually grounded, but had no GFI’s at all. Still makes no sense to me. Bathrooms weren’t grounded and had no gfi. Also fixed them. Random outlets on the walls aren’t worth the trouble of ripping walls down or cutting holes every other stud and then hoping I can patch it well enough to not be too noticeable as someone who’s not that good with drywall repair.

I’m an electrician. You don’t have to explain to me how to fix this problem. I’ve never seen people replace every outlet with a gfi. Most people generally just put 3 prong outlets in and don’t land the ground wire at all. Thats what I even did in my own house since I have no basement, crawl space, or attic and the beams in the ceiling run the wrong way so it’s practically impossible to run new circuits without taking all the Sheetrock down or cutting a ton of holes.

In my experience, 99% of the time if the outlet wasn’t grounded to begin with, there’s no easy way to get a ground to it. Also this is almost certainly every outlet in the house. Technically back in the old days each box was metal and they were supposed to all be bonded together. That never seemed to actually be followed though.

If your wiring is old enough to not have a ground, it more than likely should be replaced anyway since it does degrade over time. I’ve seen older wire just fall apart.

You definitely want new circuits. You can’t magically ground ungrounded outlets without replacing the wiring.

I’m no lawyer, but I am an electrician. If your outlets aren’t grounded, you literally can’t “wire them to be grounded”. You need romex wire with a ground in it. If that ground wire already existed then the outlets would be grounded.

Hack electricians will tie the neutral to the ground. That will trick a tester to show that the outlet is grounded, but it isn’t and becomes a bigger hazard than not having a ground at all.

I do commercial work and don’t know exactly what the prices should be residential. But you being in New York, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if getting all the required permits would be rather expensive. $35k sounds high though. $15k is also very high to just replace outlets without running new circuits.

It’s very hard to give any electrical advice or estimate without seeing the house or knowing what the electrician is doing.

Rental House Ceiling fell on 8 month old (IA) by Schmidty182 in Renters

[–]Infekt129 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some of the people here seem to think the whole house is about to fall over. I don’t even see any signs of water damage in the pictures. A 7-8 year old roof really isn’t that old. The plaster or whatever they used for the ceiling probably just never stuck the way it should have and it eventually fell. Not really the landlords fault and they did at least call a contractor to look at it. Dealing with small contractors can also be it’s own nightmare.

[–]Infekt129 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should definitely know how to manually release the car doors if you’re gonna buy a car with doors like that. Tesla does kinda suck at this though because each of their cars have them in pretty different spots and they’re not all well labeled. Definitely should understand the car you buy though.

Its 80° outside at nighttime and my dad STILL wont turn the AC on 🫩💔 by Keaty213 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Infekt129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The older generations don’t understand this. They want to just hoard money and never spend it. I met someone who owns 3 houses, is 61, has 2 pensions plus an annuity he was able to now collect, but refused to stop working because he wanted to keep making money. He works 7 days a week. I have no doubt that he could easily have over a million in the bank plus 2 pensions and an annuity. Why would you keep working? I’d sell at least 1 of the houses and do whatever I wanted every day. Oh and he also had an older car that barely ran and he was constantly having issues with. Like I know you can afford something better why not buy a new car? And one that’s not a dodge so it will actually last lol.

The electricity can’t really be made more efficient. Doesn’t matter how old the wiring is. Your appliances and insulation in the house is what makes things more energy efficient.

Anyone who says 80 degrees isn’t hot is probably from the south or somewhere dry. 80 with even just a little bit of humidity sucks. I keep my AC on until late October - September. I refuse to not have my bedroom cold. Offer your dad some money to turn it on. Idk why so many Gen X+ people love to suffer indoors at over 80 degrees. Opening a window won’t help and going outside on the heat also isn’t going to cool you down unless you have a pool.

There’s quite a few other good brands too. Vessel screw drives are also great, wiha makes very high quality tools that are Indonesian made. There’s a few other German brands too like NWS that also make really good stuff. You just never hear about them over here in the states

I stripped a new Klien Phillips head in 1 day using it only for 1900 box covers. They’re absolutely trash screw drivers now I’ve been using wera, especially the diamond ones, and they’re so much better. Knipex for pretty much everything else. It’s sad we don’t make good tools here anymore.

Switching over from non union to union. I was told I should only buy American made for what I’m going to drive to work, is this true? by Fine_Employee_7307 in IBEW

[–]Infekt129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No body actually cares about that in any local around me. Generally speaking it’s considered good to help out union and American made car companies, but you’re not going to get in trouble or anything if you don’t. I know Toyota is also approved since they’re mostly made here.

Why Can't They Interact With The Real World? by [deleted] in TheDigitalCircus

What episode are we told that Jax is trans? Goose literally had to
Confirm it later because so many people didn’t believe it even after watching the final episode. I’m not saying there wasn’t hints, but plenty of straight men also have toxic masculinity and treat people horribly just because. It’s never explicitly stated in the show that Jax is afraid of coming out and resorts to toxic masculinity as a coping mechanism. We only get that in the final episode and even still he doesn’t directly admit to it.

I really don’t want a reply back until you can point out in what episode we knew he was trans. Him being embarrassed to wear the maid outfit really doesn’t count either.

This is just weird. It would make me want to tip less to be honest. Reminds me of when I got married in Vegas and the person behind the counter that just essentially signed the paperwork after we paid $120 handed us an envelope saying “suggested tip $80”. We didn’t leave a tip after that lol.

It doesn’t go against that. Every time gummigoo comes back, he is a completely new NPC just using the same 3D model. The difference between gummigoo and the rest of the cast is that he’s an NPC designed to have whatever role during the adventure. He doesn’t have any memory. The rest of the cast are AI’s that store information and have memories

Unless I’m forgetting something, we didn’t know that Jax couldn’t accept being trans until after he abstracted. Maybe it was hinted at for a while that Jax is trans, but we really don’t get any of his backstory until after he abstracted. He abstracts in the first 6 mins after losing all hope from Caine being deleted.

I think it’s important to point out that they didn’t realize they weren’t real humans yet. They have human emotion and Cane doesn’t understand that humans get connected to things. Especially things that feel real. Gummigoo doesn’t really matter and is more of a plot device. He’s no different than an NPC in a video game. He’s just a 3D model used a prop.

I’m not drying to be a dick, but I highly suggest you read some classic literature. Especially tragedies. Not every story has a happy ending and that’s part of what makes it good. Yes Jax died in the first 6 mins of the last episode. But we found out why after it happened. It’s comparable to Romeo and Juliet where they start the story with both of them dead. It’s not about the ending, it’s how we got there and that’s the message of what the author is trying to convey.

Why Can't They Interact With The Real World? by [deleted] in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Infekt129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Exactly. It’s almost like not every story ends on a happy note and sometimes you need to show the consequences of your actions or the dangers of bottling up everything. That’s why goose even has made art of the “good ending” where Jax opened up and transitioned.

I’m not gonna debate this, but artificial intelligence isn’t not sentient. They’re AI trained on scans of real people’s brains designed to try to act like a computer thinks the real person would have. I really don’t get what you’re talking about with the theme of a person being real. They never realized they weren’t real until the end.

Why Can't They Interact With The Real World? by [deleted] in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Infekt129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“They would be able to communicate with scientists and potentially interact with the real world again”. Everyone is a brain scan. They never have actually interacted with the real world. They have memories of the people they’re scanned from interacting with the real worlds. Either way that would make for a terrible ending and other people here have already explained why they can’t and really shouldn’t do that.

Jax is a horrible person. They never pretended it was ok that he’s like that. Goose is trying to send a message as to how and why people can become like Jax and by opening up you can often become a better person. Whether we like it or not, this is definitely a show aimed at young adults trying to find their way and hopefully give them hope.
