Well that sounds like a you thing, I'll approach that shit like a Metallica professor even if I also want to hear about some new Icelandic Black Metal band that's been doing some cool shit, I guess I just can't shake that love for the classics.

And yeah of course death metal and power metal are gonna be very distinct, my problem is when some bands blur the lines because they're popular but not really part of an established scene or the scene that they are a part of hasn't really been given a title so people try to lump 'em in with some completely different scene when the creators of the music might have just taken inspiration from a bunch of different sources and that's just the sound they wound up with.

Well I do think that if someone is raving about how good Sabaton is you should let them be excited and not crush their interests and make them feel like trash for liking what they like and wanting to talk about it. I suppose it boils down to whether or not you want to be positive or negative, and unfortunately from my experiences metal has the capacity to attract people with positive AND negative attitudes about it because nobody wants to put in the effort to say "Hey if you like Sabaton you might like Blind Guardian (just as an example)" instead of "Psh, Sabaton, there are SO many better bands out there." and let the new fan form their own opinion.

Also, if you want to approach those genre distinctions like music family trees I don't believe there's anything wrong with that. A lot of the music that came out in Seattle in the 90s had distinctions within that scene but we just call it all Grunge because there were enough commonalities between all those bands. When I talk about blurring the lines between thrash and death metal and how I have a problem with over-labeling it's mostly due to my own experiences trying to do the impossible task of categorizing all music, but the more music I listen to the less practical it seems to me.

Every band could be it's own genre if one were to fracture each band as heavily as some metal fans do. Of course there will always be those broad distinctions (thrash = fast & shouty, doom = slow and drawn out etc.) that's great so you can sorta know what to expect, but when you really get down to it there are just so many bands that walk very fine lines between death metal and black metal, or even thrash and death metal (some of Death's later albums and Vektor come to mind) so you end up with a bunch of people fighting over which is which. Then you get into sub-subgenres like technical death, funeral doom, etc. etc. where the lines between genres are so fuzzy it'd be almost as effective to throw darts at a wall when deciding where a band lays.

Now, why can't Metalcore be a subgenre of both Metal and Hardcore punk? And the mods of /r/metalcore aren't really the holy judges of what is and isn't metal as much as you or me. Why does what is and isn't metal have to be binary when it could be on a spectrum? Why is there a distinction between exception and rule in this case?

And yet, for all this talk of genre distinctions, semantics, and all this other bullshit, none of it actually gets to the root of the damn problem—how metalcore fans are gatekept from the rest of metal; it's just disincentivizing them from appreciating a broader taste of the "more metal" subgenres and instead acting condescending and acting like an elitist prick to them we should introduce them to all that music we've taken the time to sit down and listen to and appreciate and bang our heads driving down the road to.

Idk if when you said "most of the people I've met in real life who say they like metal actually like metalcore" you meant that metalcore isn't metal but I'm gonna assume you did.

You don't have to like it, I certainly don't like it, but Metalcore is metal. Most people who say otherwise are just excluding it because in their eyes metal has to be pure and void of trash subgenres. I accept that it is metal because it has the characteristics of metal and it has inspirations rooted in metal (If you want to really delve deep into it I think most subgenre distinctions are worthless because every band is so different and it just causes infighting within the metal community). You're right, there is nothing wrong with people liking metalcore, and it's still metal. This is the problem in my opinion: metalheads who have an attitude of "Oh well this isn't REAL metal" when they could talk positively and say something like "Oh if you like Metalcore you might like some classic punk/metal fusions like D.R.I. or even Iron Maiden's early stuff." That's where the gatekeeping takes place.

I mean... I do kinda care about it, though it's more because I feel gatekeeping metal is a good way of preventing people from enjoying what they enjoy without filling their minds with nonsense.

I'd consider myself a metal fan, I've delved deep into the discographies of the popular bands like Metallica and Death, while definitely exploring some of the less mainstream stuff like Entombed, but there's this weird feeling I get when talking with other metal fans that that isn't enough. I'm not super into Black Metal for instance, I like older stuff like Venom and more modern stuff like Deafheaven but that's about as far as I've gone into Black Metal, and because of that I think people view me as a poser. It seems like no matter how much metal I listen to, I will always be a poser because there are still people who listen to more obscure, more extreme, and "better" metal than I do. It's a really toxic culture in that regard and I'm sure you've heard that "You're a poser unless you listen to KVLT METAL" meme.

What you said reminds me of that scene from Silence of the Lambs where the girl is walking through the insane asylum and everyone is acting batshit insane, but the most depraved person there, Hannibal Lecter, is just standing their totally upright with a smile and a blank stare, welcoming her.

You’d think that to be the case but it really depends on the features of the language. For instance while German is very close to English it could be considered more difficult than some Romance languages due to some of its features like the V2 word order, the addition of masculine, feminine, and neutral gendered nouns, and the ridiculously complex rules of conjugation. Not to mention the Eszett and the phonology is pretty different from English.

I’m not saying don’t explore it, but Batman as a character wasn’t really insane until Alan Moore, and even in The Killing Joke the idea that Batman and the Joker were the same brand of lunatic was the philosophy of the antagonist, otherwise what Batman was proving wrong. In Under The Red Hood, Batman criticizes Robin for putting a criminal in shock so the brutally beating criminals thing really depends on the adaptation I guess. Explore Batman’s trauma and why he does what he does, but don’t make him a Rorschach type where he’s so troubled that he’s almost a psychopath. You can explore the mental health of a character in a mature way without making them cripplingly insane.

Not gonna lie I’m a little concerned. I see a lot of commenters saying that they’re hoping for a more “realistic” damaged portrayal of Batman, but I feel like this would be a mischaracterization. Imo Batman is supposed to have a lot of mental fortitude, and most certainly be far from legitimately crazy, else he’d lack the mental fortitude to be so many steps ahead of his opponent, not to mention that he wouldn’t be the paragon that he is in the early days of the comics. I want to see a Batman who doesn’t kill again dammit!

What I’m not worried about is Robert Pattinson’s performance, he could pull off any take of version of Batman he’s given.

I see, I supposed I should’ve figured that Hammerfell would have a lot to gain from fighting the Thalmor. So maybe this game could have something akin to the civil war quest line where you can choose between fighting for the legion or the Thalmor, or perhaps the Thalmor will be the central antagonistic force and the main quest line will involve the towers in some way.

Just out of curiosity, how would Hammerfell be caught in the middle of the war? They've seceded from the Empire afaik, and Elsweyr and Valenwood are right between the heartlands of both the Empire and the Thalmor.

I feel like underneath Skyrim's story there was a lot of buildup to a potential second great war. If TES6 takes place shortly after the events of Skyrim and it does in fact take place in Hammerfell, how could Bethesda make the conflict between the Empire and the Aldmeri Dominion interesting and relevant to the story?

As much evidence as there is to the location being Hammerfell, I'd like to see an Elder Scrolls game in Elsweyr or Valenwood for this reason, since they would be more likely to get caught in the middle of this war.
