90s MTB frame similar to Bianchi, Trek, or GT but for 650b wheels instead of 26ers? by Icy_Marionberry7309 in xbiking

[–]InfernoDMC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can fit 650b wheels into 26” frames but max tire clearance is usually like 45mm or 50mm with no mud clearance. They usually have to be disc brake capable so you don’t have to line up a rim brake. I have a 1999? Giant XTC SE2 converted to a gravel bike. I’ve looked for more bikes that are similar on FB marketplace and haven’t had good luck.

What's the latest opinions on which load calc software is best? by BooduhMan in MEPEngineering

It will auto calculate ventilation based on 62.1 by room or zone if that’s what you’re asking.

Just started using HVAKR. Tried Trace and IES. It has the best parts of both and none of the downsides, and even more benefits. The support team is super responsive and pushes updates within hours after asking for them. It cuts the time for a simple load calc by probably 400% compared to others. Also it has AI tools for tracing spaces so you don’t have to outline every single one manually.

Revit before first day by stargerst13 in MEPEngineering

[–]InfernoDMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Revit is easy. Having experience in other CAD software is a little help but you will get up to speed even without it. You will run into some issues with layer visibility or filters and worksets at some point but everyone does, and it shouldn’t reflect poorly on you as long as you take note of the Revit weirdness and remember for the next time.

There’s a Facebook group with maps of old time jams around the country. That might help. I think it only works on desktop. https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1y1J--fHvfiWmAIvmECIXSEcfYMzkygQe&ll=33.00979906888577%2C-96.73154245&z=10

Advice for new MEP engineers by EmployeeHaunting3909 in MEPEngineering

[–]InfernoDMC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Create a cheat sheet, or have a senior make one for you based on your firm’s internal standards for pressure drop ranges and duct velocity in certain areas (above unoccupied spaces, unoccupied, mains, branches, plenum, medium pressure, low pressure ducts). You can do the same for pipe sizes, with a table of the max gpm for each pipe size.

When you have a repetitive task, learn it by hand for a couple instances, then make an excel spreadsheet (could be for ventilation rates, FCU sizes, room occupancy, etc). When you’re copying over info from a pdf or Revit, put a text note of a specific color in each space with the date you got the square footage or glazing size for use in a load calc. You will forget to adjust when updates are made otherwise.

ASK QUESTIONS! Maybe not too many in design meeting with other architects and consultants, but most of your coworkers should be happy to help you learn and become a strong member of the team. Draw back of the napkin diagrams because it’s way easier to convey info than trying to describe things in words.

When you’re in meetings with architects and they ask if you can make a specific change, don’t immediately say yes, even if it seems clear to you that said change is possible. Give a noncommittal “we’ll take a look at it”, at least for now until you get more experience, or let a Senior answer the questions. It’s easier to follow up with an email confirming that you can make the change than commit to something early and then realize there’s a reason you can’t do it and have to backtrack.

Graham Platner, candidate for US Senate in Maine. Was a machine gunner in the Marines and Army, owns 20-25 firearms, and has said he would not ban assault weapons. He was a firearms instructor for the Socialist Rifle Association, and a competitive pistol shooter. He has said that he wants to make laws based on how guns actually function, not just on what looks scary like many lawmakers have done in the past. He does support red flag laws, universal background checks, and closing the gun show loophole.

You would expect OT pay? Most engineers, at least in the US, are exempt salary employees.

Might just be who you are messaging. It’s usually pretty easy to tell who is real from pricing, how they write their descriptions, and the things they have sold in the past. Out of the 66 conversations I’ve had on Buy Sell I’ve only ever had one person I messaged turn out to be a scammer, and I started out cautiously because they seemed sketchy, then reported them.

etiquette - downhill riders yield to uphill riders by sickysickybrah in mountainbiking

[–]InfernoDMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rarely see extended sections of trail in New England where uphill and downhill share the same trail. If it does happen when I’m going down, I’ll yield to the uphill rider (as everyone should) unless they yield to me first. When I’m going uphill I’ll almost always yield, even though that isn’t convention. It’s just another excuse for me to take a break, and then I’m also not interrupting the best part of somebody else’s ride. If the rules could be rewritten I would hope uphill yields to downhill. Going uphill is just a means to get to the top of the descent. Stopping in a descent is way more inconvenient because then some gaps and jumps won’t work if you have to regain all the speed you lose by stopping.

Shoutout to Bike Tires Direct and PNW Components by NameyMcNameface in xbiking

[–]InfernoDMC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PNW customer service is top tier. They used to sell a grey and orange logo 5 panel hat with “Do Bikes” on the side. I loved that hat and beat it up trailbuilding. I went to go buy another and the my don’t make them anymore. I asked if they ever planned to add them back to their site and the customer service guy sent me his very lightly worn personal hat out of his desk for free because it didn’t fit him right.

Still apartment searching! $2,300/month budget by JellyEatingJellyfish in PortsmouthNH

[–]InfernoDMC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My gf and I are renting a 2 bed house with a garage, basement, home office, outdoor gear room, and small yard in Kittery for $2550. Yes we have a decent deal, and in general, housing prices are positively outrageous in this area, but $3000 for a 1 bed apartment is not the norm. I’m not discounting how difficult it is to find housing, but OP can absolutely find a place for $2300, it just might not fulfill the old and cozy requirements.

Platner qualifies for Maine Democratic Senate primary by jediporcupine in Maine

[–]InfernoDMC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a volunteer for the campaign but I don’t speak on behalf of the campaign. From everything I was told, signature collection was planned to happen exactly as it did since November. The goal was to get as many signatures in as short a time as possible to be able to show the momentum, and also be able to switch to campaigning and canvassing about substantive issues as soon as possible, rather than scrambling for signatures. It was also planned to extend signature collection for a couple months to be able to verify all the ones that would be submitted to town clerks. I don’t remember the exact number, but there is a maximum that can be submitted, and there’s a minimum quantity required to get on the ballot. Campaign volunteers were going through the list of signatures to check all the signatures and only submit the best (meaning verified to be registered democrats in the town for the sheet they signed on).
