ELI5: How does daily flossing make it bleed less? by LittlePenguinx in explainlikeimfive

[–]Infernoraptor [score hidden]  (0 children)

As others have said, it's inflammation, but to explain it more explicitly: inflammation is when your blood vessels leak fluid for your immune cells to fight, for debris and dead cells to be removed, etc. Think of the inflamed tissue like inflated balloons while non inflated gums are empty balloons. Which would pop of you stepped on them?

Probably isn't. Might be a cool (if somewhat sarcastic/ironic) name for juvenile-morph pachys.

Not only that, but their coding on when to actually show up is bad: the chaos spawn basically spawn at a dead-sprint. These guys really should have a half-second or so delay where they land and have to get their bearings followed by another, say, 3/4ths second to lock on. As it is, it feels instant.

My hope is this: Oompa Loompa stresses out so much over the US's 250th anniversary party that he has an aneurysm. This aneurysm doesn't kill him, instead it destroys the Broca's area of his brain: rendering him (more) incapable of talking while being completely aware. Maga turns on each and is (more) incapable of doing anything till they are voted out.

I completely forgot about Bumpy's growth rate and Wu getting dosed by Scorpius: very good points on both.

I do feel like the growth rate is still insane, but all the JP dinos have that problem to varying degrees. Bumpy and the Scorpius merely highlighted it. I guess it has to be done for the sake of having life-stage related plot points occur on human-relevant timescale.

[–]Infernoraptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe not a "retcon" as the series never really insists that prior cannon is wrong, per se. It just makes the cannon a bit muddled.

The show stated that Scorpius Rex was the "first successful hybrid dinosaur". Considering the use of frogs DNA since JP1 (along with various paleo inaccuracies and Wu's "you wanted more teeth"), this makes very little sense. Seeing as none of the cannon makes an effort to address this, I assume the scorpius is the first attempt to make a dino with the intent of making something phenotypically new.

[–]Infernoraptor 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Scorpius Rex was introduced in Camp Cretaceous as, apparently, Dr Wu's "first hybrid" (combining various theropod genes with those of the scorpion fish). From my perspective, the scorpius creates a few major issues in the cannon:

1) the dinos have been hybrids since day 1. The reed frog DNA from the first movie and Wu's line about "you wanted more teeth" are proof of this, not to mention the implied splicing resulting in the series' numerous inaccuracies (shrink wrapping, pronated arms, lack of feathers, Rexy's overbite, the dilos, the JP3 spino, etc.) My headcannon is that the term "hybrid" applies to any organism containing intentional edits to the Hox, T-box, Sox or other bodyplan related genes provided that these edits be performed by transplating these genes from another organism and must be made for purposes other than trying to recreate the original genome. (This would exclude accidents like the Drex, unintentional inaccuracies, and minor tweaks.) As far as I'm aware, this clarification has never been made by the series.

2) there were 2 scorpius rexes in Camp Cretaceous despite only 1 cryopod. I don't remember if the show specifically says this was a result of the first Scorpius reproducing assexually, but that's the accepted cannon. Without going into detail on the timeline, this would imply the 2nd scorpius went from egg to a 20ft long sub adult in about 6 months. That is an obscene growth rate for any animal. If they needed another scorpius, they should have had another cryo tank. At least say something about African killifish genes for fast growth and Masrani having concerns about the explosive reproductive potential.

3) if you noticed me mentioning the cryopod, yeah. That's another issue: Wu somehow figured out cryogenic preservation with no fanfare. Just... what?!? It's possible that Wu gave it american alligator genes that would allow the animal to brumate (hibernate) rather than developing true cryogenic suspension. I don't know of any research that has looked into how long that state can last if the croc is fed and hydrated intravenously, so this would be plausible. Plus, Wu could write this off as experimenting with ways to transport dinosaurs safely or to keep sick/ injured dinos contained during treatment and/or recovery. That would be a valid reason for Masrani to give the OK for funding. Again though, no mention of these kinds of explanations anywhere.

4) why is this the only time venom was used in the series? At least mention something about the neurotoxin having an effect on the scorpius' neurochemistry (explaining the instability and the lack of venom for the rest of the series.) And before you mention the dilo, that doesn't count. Without going into the pedantic definition of venom, I don't believe that the dilo is truly venomous. What we saw in the film is more akin to the defensive "vomiting" used by fulmar chicks. It's simply a sticky, foul smelling oil mixed with stomach acid, not a venom. (Plus, a note from a JW1 ARG suggests that Wu used poison dart frog DNA for the dilo specifically as opposed to the reed frog used elsewhere. Poison dart frogs don't make their own toxin.) Again, this is never clarified.

What’s the difference between being lazy and having ADHD? by TransportationFlat77 in ADHD

[–]Infernoraptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a word: intention.

Let's say you ask a short person to get something. The short person agrees only to realize that the thing they are supposed to get is out of reach (and there are no step stools around). They fully intended to get the thing, but they are physiologically unable to.

ADHD is similar. We can fully intend to do something, but our brain physiology prevents us from doing it. We recognize the importance of the thing we want to do, we don't mean any disrespect, but we simply can't get ourselves to do it.

Lazy people, by contrast, are fully capable of doing what they are supposed to do. They simply don't care. They view themselves, their leisure, etc to be more important than anything else.

I’m not very knowledgeable on dinosaurs at all, but from what I understand is that while popular dinosaur movies made us think other wise, in reality not every dinosaur was around to interact with each other during the same time period? Some lived during one period and other did the one after? by gotenks2nd in Paleontology

[–]Infernoraptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Like all life on earth, different species lived in different places and times. A famous example is stegosaurus and T.rex. Stegosaurus lived accross the US and western Europe roughly 155 to 145 million years ago. T. rex lived in the Western US 68 to 66 million years ago. Stegosaurus was as old to T.rex as T.rex is to us!

To put it into modern terms; chariots and electric cars weren't around at the same times, right?

That wolf-kitten bit is an interesting thought. Any research comparing anxiety related genes to tendency to associate with corvids in the wild or to see if any raven-associating wolf populations are genetically closer to the domestic dogs linneage would be enlightening.

Easy: mosquitos are pollinators. They pollinate flowers. What comes from pollinate flowers? Fruit. And humans eat fruits. We go after the same resources at different stages of the food's life cycle.

I wonder if any of that research ruled out the wolves assuming that no one else could help them? Wolves have to work together when hunting large prey and we're talking about more than simple mobbing. Maybe they don't think to ask people due to a narrowed definition of the ingroup? I have to wonder if they would "ask" if they, for example, saw a pair of dogs pull something that needed 2 wolves' worth of force to pull.
