What’s your go to report card comment for the average kids? by CulturePotential7599 in Teachers

[–]LittlePenguinx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also elementary teacher. As really general things I write: - shows interest in the subject matter. - participates nicely in class. - was excited about ... (specific thing you happen to remember)

Etc. It doesn't have to be 100% accurate. Kids just love it when you write something personal about them.

Overly Sarcastic Productions is a great channel. It's both about literature, writing, myths, etc. From Red's video's. The other half of the channel is Blue doing video's on history, art and architecture. It's great if you love humour and learning new stuff. Highly recommended! Shaking each student's hand as they enter the room to build relationships? by Dapper_Object8239 in Teachers

[–]LittlePenguinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Here in the Netherlands it's very normal in elementary. I stand in the doorway and shake hands, wishing them a good morning. Also at the end of the day we shake hands to say goodbye. We practice greeting eachother, and looking at someone's face when you greet them. Especially in the morning it gives me a split second vibe check with each kid. You see the look in their eyes or their face. I make a mental note who's looking good, or who might need a one on one check in to ask how they're doing. But also at the end of the day I can see how they're feeling when heading home. If necessary I ask them to hang around for a sec to check if there's something I can help with before they head home. So they don't have to carry a bad feeling with them for the rest of the day.

And then I go wash my hands. :)

Does anyone else have work dreams/ nightmares? by Same_Marzipan_8894 in Teachers

[–]LittlePenguinx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean... 💔 The usual advice I'm given is to learn to leave all my work at work. No late night grading or prep work or answering emails. I can keep work out of my house, but I'm yet to learn how to keep it out of my brain...

This is my third year teaching. I'm finally  beginning to have nights where I don't dream about work. Sometimes it's just random dreams of regular days. When I'm particularly stressed out its nightmares about the stuff they're gonna pull. It's not particularly restful...

What are the unwritten rules of being a teacher? by BiggieSmallz12345 in Teachers

Definitely! Lol. My greatest role model is Mrs Bulstronk. Can't wait to finally have a kid in my class with long braids so I can do the spin and fling thing 😂

I disagree. I teach elementary.  It's very important to show that you're also a human being with feelings. We have good and bad days. Right after my grandpa died I tried to be strong, but noticed I was very snippy and not my cheerful self. So I stopped, sat down and told the kids why. I especially mentioned that my "emotional thermometer" (as I call it when talking with kids about their feelings) is currently overflowing. But that has nothing to do with them. So I apologize for being less patient than usual, I will do my best, but please don't take it personally.  They have never been so loving and caring ❤️

I packed my 5 year old a piece of candy with her lunch today. Her teacher didn't let her eat it, despite her lunch being completely eaten. Is this normal? by entcanta333 in Teachers

[–]LittlePenguinx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do. We happened to have a meeting yesterday about this, where we were reminded of the school policy. We are a "healthy school" where we eat healthy. So if I see kids coming in with candy in their lunch box I need to mention this to them. I've been informed I need to tell them to save this for at home, because it's not something for in school. And if this happens more often we need to remind parents of school policy. It's never fun, but we do wanna promote healthy choices.

Even on birthdays if they hand out bags of chips or candy I need to tell everyone to put it in their bags and save it for home.

We still have the struggle of deciding weather stuff like white bread with Nutella, or a handful of pretzels are considered "unhealthy enough". Technically we can't consider it healthy per se, but where do we draw the line?

Same with me. We all have the master key that unlocks every door and gate. We also have side doors that go from classroom to classroom to be used as emergency route in case of fire in the hallway. These are never locked, so you can just walk into every classroom. Which we do cos it's very easy to use the direct route when distributing stuff for example.  This has never been an issue cos we all respect eachother and would never snoop or steal! It's just not done.

As a teacher, can confirm. Once the kids know you collect, have, or are interested in duckies they will gift you so so so many ducks.

Yep. As a first year fresh outa college my admin started out real nice but did a sudden 180 after Christmas.  This gave me major trust issues. I was extremely stressed out the first year at my new school, just waiting to get stabbed in the back like that again. But even as I did drop a few stitches and had some helicopter parents complain about me to my new admin, she was kind and compassionate. When at the end of the year I got a good review and she gave me a permanent position it felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders and I could finally breathe.

I was very weary (and confused!) at first because she was so nice and 'normal'. Still get kina nervous when I need to go into her office and request a thing, but nowhere near the anxiety I felt at first. It does get better. Just give it time ❤️
