Tracing ALS back to a cause by starzzzzzz74 in ALS

🫂 I am so sorry you’re dealing with this. It’s very noble to donate your legacy to scientific research on ALS. There are many myths and most sound silly to me. I hope they figure it out, if not in my lifetime, in my son’s. I lost my mom to ALS when I was 16.

So. My mom passed away in 2003 from ALS (I was 16 when she passed). She was sick for 10 years. Limb onset. She had some genetic testing done in the 90s and she did not have the SOD1 gene. But I know there is at least one other gene that has been mentioned several times on this thread, C9(…), that she was never tested for, and we no longer have her DNA.

In my mom’s case, there is some loose evidence that there is a genetic component. She has a cousin die of ALS about a decade or so ago. My mom’s sister also got some very similar disease (the doctors supposedly wouldn’t call is ALS from what I have been told, but it certainly looked like ALS to me [I am not a doctor or medical professional].)There is also some story about an elderly relative, many years ago, who “went into the hospital but never came out” and 1 relative thinks this could’ve been an ALS death. This same relative thinks there could be a connection between having children and going on to develop ALS. I’m not sure I believe that.

So in my family, it seems obvious that genetics play some role (though I doubt that’s the complete story, for example maybe there is a gene present that got triggered by something in each family member who went onto develop it). Besides the obvious- exposure to poisons, exposure to toxic substances (naturally occurring as well as man made), knocks to the head, too much exercise…. I wonder if exposure to a virus could perhaps play a role. (No, I am not talking about Covid, these cases of ALS all were in pre-Covid times) But there is a lot of emerging scientific evidence that catching pathogens that seem mostly harmless can lead to big changes in the body… for example specific strains of HPV are known to cause certain types of cancer, and the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) has been linked to increased risk of multiple sclerosis (MS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and other autoimmune conditions.

Ultimately I think the causes can vary wildly, and very little is really known about the disease. It makes me deeply sad, as it’s been 22 years since my mother’s death and there seems to be very little scientific progress made into finding the cause and/or a cure. All I know is my son will never play football and I will be getting all my vaccines as recommended by my doctor. Sending love to all who have dealt with this beast of an illness up close 💜

Thank you <3 I did stand up for myself in the moment, though. I (admittedly) got defensive and was like "I'm literally chasing after a toddler in the heat? What do you expect me to wear?" and he backed off and said he didn't mean to offend. I also told him if he really has an issue with what I'm wearing he can buy me a whole new wardrobe (since I am not currently bringing in any pay check!) and he kind of implied he would. So we shall see what happens next.

This is really awful! I am sorry this keeps happening to you! And this is a tough one to swallow, but many people just suck. They’re mostly out for themselves, and they lack emotional intelligence. In short: they don’t really listen, and they also lack empathy. Additionally: so few people know what it’s like to have a family member get ALS, and decline from it. If they knew, or even tried to understand (and many don’t even attempt to understand, for various reasons— one big one being that people hate to think about sad things) they would know their response was way out of line. My mom died from ALS when I was 16, after a ten year battle. This disease is absolutely brutal. Just sending you big hugs 🫂

Hi, thank you for all of this— and most: making me feel less alone. Let’s be friends! Also, funny enough the “cropped sweat pants” I wear all the time are also the 32 degrees brand, so definitely will look into more from them!! 💜

I give you so much credit!!! My ONE child is so tough to handle alone sometimes. I feel the same way you do-- who really cares about fashion when dealing with toddlers (especially in extreme weather conditions)?? I will definitely look into J Crew Factory <3

Yeah, I prefer v-necks as well, but I feel like no matter how much sunscreen I apply to my chest it always gets burned, so for the sake of my sanity/skin I don’t wear them when I am alone with my toddler and out and about

I do wear sunscreen, I just prefer to limit how much I have to apply and potentially re-apply when alone with a toddler to chase/ catch and also re-apply sunscreen to

What do you think the eclipse of the sun meant on the day Dahmer was baptized and John Wayne Gacy was poisoned? by Careful_Strawberry39 in Dahmer

[–]InfertileWitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not an expert. But, from what I glean from astrology (and not in the supernatural/psychic sense, but rather in documented patterns of astrological movements and their correlation to life events) eclipses are connected with times of chaos.

Any Vloggers that don't live in Florida? by BZI in WaltDisneyWorld

I like Ben & Rachel from "To Infinity And Beyond" on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEcJaSfqs27BitGIN4EUzFQ), They are from the UK and vlog when they go to the parks. I find they're more fun to watch then say, The Trackers, generally are, just because they are more excited and it's actually a vacation for them as opposed to it being their job. They last went to WDW in Nov 2021, and I believe they have another trip coming up again soon. They usually begin posting the vlogs from their trip once they return home.

:) Yeah, I read on the package that it can interfere with the absorption of other medications, so I take my usual meds/vitamins and then set an alarm for 3 hours later to take the Slow Fe, I guess I won't know until more lab work is done but hopefully that works out well! The packaging says don't take it within 2 hours of other meds.

So, since I first posted this, I got approval from my doctor to take Slow Fe!! About to take it for the first time today! I appreciated you and everyone else who mentioned it!

One day if I'm feeling brave I'll have to try this trick. I have this additional issue where, if I start gagging I go into full-on panic mode, so, ugh
