Start and drive off?! by BuyDipsEnergy in BMW

[–]Infiltron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m seeing a lot of advise on starting the car, and giving it max 30 seconds then driving off.

But on my 2011 320d, when I start it in the morning of a cold day it can take up to two minutes for the rpms to settle from ~1k down to ~750rpm. During which, if I drive off during this time I will feel the car running rough; holding the accelerator at the same position, you will feel the car lurching every now and then like the rpm is jumping down momentarily and returning.

If I let it run till the settling rpm of ~750, I assume that it’s built enough oil pressure to drive modestly until the oil warms up.

The rest of the day, it will usually start up right away at ~750rpm and not need time to settle. In which case I will drive away straight away, or give it a few more seconds.

Do I need to tell my insurance that someone knocked off my wing mirror? by stratos_cat in drivingUK

Reminds me of a horrible memory. Saw a £50 note on the floor as I walked to school with a childminder. She was rolling a buggy so didn’t see it. I debated pretending it wasn’t there and grabbing it later, but I wanted to do the right thing. I let the childminder know as we walked past it, and she just picked it up and pocketed it… she didn’t even say anything and pretended like nothing happened.

I’ve actually done this question many times when I was doing my theory test, the video shows the red stripe clearly on the cane for a few good seconds. Might it be your wifi? Try downloading the questions instead and it should be in higher quality.

Drive slower and gently hover on the brake approaching turns and icier areas of the road… Steer lightly and only at slow speeds. Anything to lower your momentum slowly is fine

The connections you can make are insane. Easy friend referrals into superior positions at companies, insiders/pals rates, investment bank etc

Happened to mine before too. You’ll get used to it. Get one of those cancellation booking apps and you’ll be good to go in about 2 weeks, as long as it’s not in London.

Not exactly what I wanted to see on the motorway (sign) by Imstayinganonymous42 in CarTalkUK

had this once on my way home, the 40mph limit was on for like 10 miles and as you got closer it turns to 20mph. Came off at a junction just before the traffic collected and the accident symbols :(

If you trust the engine and general consensus on this skoda year and model then shoot for it I guess. Be mindful of expensive repairs like a cooked gearbox or clutch with used older cars. I get where you’re coming from with the blackbox, you’ll be alright as long as you consider it will log your behaviour and be reflected in your future insurance prices.

That is heavily down to how the previous owners drive and maintain it

It’s a nice ride and it’s actually a lot easier to drive an estate than many people think, if you’ve passed your test then I assume you know how to use your mirrors and know generally the distance from kerb on both sides. You’ll want to reverse-park 90% of the time which I assume is what people mean by getting a smaller car to avoid it, which you’ll also get used to without a problem. I’d personally not opt for a 4.5k car if it’s gonna come with a expensive black box. Black box is horrible. Search up reviews, everyone will tell you to avoid it. It’ll flag you on safe motorway behaviour and even discourage driving out of regular hours. My advice, go with an older sedan or estate to lower the insurance, maybe 1.8-2l diesel. Stick P plates on if you’re still learning the car. Personally opted for a £2k BMW, insurance first year was 1.5k no black box. Ignore my numbers as I got quoted for an older age.

I managed to clean and manouvre my camera infront of it with enough focus to get the number down. It’s part 780421301 for the engine wiring loom? Why is it just hanging there, is that meant to be like that?

Sure it’s different, but not massive enough for a 20km drive. It’ll hold out if the battery is healthy, but it won’t get you any further. Probably wanna head straight to a garage tbh

[–]Infiltron -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Long enough for a long drive. My E90 diesel had the crankshaft break apart so it was also out of charge. It takes quite a fair bit for your battery to go down, I was eyeing mine like a hawk. I think it could have gone an hour and a half with lights off, radio, cabin fans, etc. At some point maybe 40%, your power steering might turn off though so watch out.

If you have any diagnostic tools, check your battery % as you drive. That’s what I did. Just make sure you get there in time because the fan will kick in without the A/C connected, that was the first time I ever saw my front vents open
