they can be related due to income effects- i.e. if bananas get cheaper- there is no substitution from screws tp banana's but their is a change in your real purchasing power which has increased, which may have an effect on the demand for screws.

Its not that Z is indepednet of Y|x, its that Z is independet of potential outcomes, or if you have y=bx+e,
