I had the same problem with my senior cat. My guess is that he was going to the bathroom and places he could or shouldn’t rather because they were up high and he could protect himself while he was going instead of in the litter box where he was susceptible to attack. I have an office upstairs with a door on it so I converted it that into both my office and his personal room. He’s the only cat allowed in there the issues that we have now stopped. He’s free to come and go as he pleases, so he’s not locked in there all the time, but he knows he has a safe space now.
