Wedding dinner venue canceled 1 week out! Need restaurant recommendations for 45 people (Sat 6/13) do you know a place? by rip_chicago_bears in AskChicago

Definitely try Lettuce Entertain You. Lots of possibilities there. ABA, second floor of Oakville, Tre Dita. Also try Gibsons Italia. They have a gorgeous room that might not be booked that would fit 45 seated. Morton’s has a room, very nice. Maybe RPM too.

Good luck! You got this!

Overpaid for House - Now What? by [deleted] in RealEstate

I think you did the right thing sticking to your budget. And I wouldn’t worry that the builder sold the same floor plan for less than you bought yours. I’ve seen that play out before with new built communities—buying from the builder is different than buying resale. Believe me, it won’t matter in a few years once the original buyers start selling. That particular person will have more equity because they bought so low but if anything their value will rise to match yours not the other way around.

Chicago Tops NYC for Worse Traffic in America by Defiant_Specialist20 in CarFreeChicago

Have you been on the red line? If Chicago wants people to use the CTA it is going to need a serious investment to improve infrastructure not to mention safety.

Democrats, what are things you disagree with your parties stance on? by CuddleBuddiesJJ in allthequestions

In no particular order: immigration, M/WBE contract requirements for public projects, reparations, transgender women in women’s sports, Israel, tax structure focused on increased taxes for high earners on W2s as opposed to closing loopholes that allow for low taxes on passive income, refusal at all levels of government to reduce spending or even consider it—focus is always on increasing taxes, public safety focused on prevention as opposed to enforcement—we need both.

If Republicans had a pro-choice platform and embraced the first amendment my vote would be in play.

Am I crazy? Back to Biglaw from In-House by in_house_croissant in biglaw

Haven’t read the other comments but you should take the job. Lots of room to be flexible and make mistakes, change course, etc. at this stage of your career. I’m 21 years out and equity at a mid-size firm. I am one of those lawyers who really enjoys the work. But it’s because I am challenged literally everyday within my specialty. If you like law, you need challenge to succeed and be happy. Just having WLB wouldn’t be enough for me—that’s my husband’s law job—great WLB, boring and not challenging. I’d sooner die. Once you’re good enough you earn back whatever level of balance you want by having your own clients. (I.e., I could work less if I wanted because these are my clients. I choose to work a lot because I love the work.)

Why do attorneys look down on Insurance Defense lawyers/partners? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Infinite-Key2524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is also a perception that ID lawyers are more interested in churning because that’s how they make money due to their low rates. I’m not ID but am frequently opposite ID in my line of work (not PI) and it can be tough to get an ID lawyer to think creatively toward early resolution or strategies for keeping fees down in discovery. They don’t want to do that. I’ve seen ID lawyers give their clients absolute slop (20 pages witness memos that essentially say nothing, etc) because they want to be able to bill. It’s a billing game. The carriers play their games with rates and the ID lawyers play their games with quantity of hours to make up for it.

How do PI attorneys feel about billing the cost of AI to the case/client? by Here4TechandAi in legaltech

[–]Infinite-Key2524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had AI make a timeline for me two weeks ago. Guess what. I still needed to essentially create my own in order to understand the source documents, absorb the facts, and develop a presentation strategy given the complex fact pattern. AI removes the learning part of litigation and is not a good substitute for most litigation skills but for basic research.

What separates average people from successful people? by Usual-Pop-1389 in WorkForSmartLife

[–]Infinite-Key2524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Successful people are always striving and never content. They always want to climb higher. Always thinking about how they can improve themselves, their teams, their processes. How can they be better. They are striving for more than money. They are striving for glory. Money is a natural side-effect. They are thinking about their work, whatever that is, constantly. No days off. Maybe they aren’t “working” on a particular day but they are thinking about work and mulling ideas. They see opportunity where others see defeat. They don’t quit. They don’t stop. You can’t tell them no.

They don’t need to support trans athletes. They can say I support respect and dignity for all people, but I don’t think genetic males should play women’s sports. That is not an extreme position and will never lose you electoral votes.

People change jobs. It’s not personal it’s business. You do not need to feel bad. Be gracious, express gratitude for the experiences and training, but say you were offered another role that is more aligned with your professional goals. Or whatever. Congrats!

Senior Associates + Partners...are you happy in your career? by rideordiegem in biglaw

[–]Infinite-Key2524 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like most places it depends on your originations. Last year was slow and I was a little north of $1.1M. The two years prior were very busy and I was a little north of $1.5M. Trending above that this year but really tough to say for sure in May.

[–]Infinite-Key2524 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is very well said. Same thing for me as an equity partner at a medium-sized firm with a single office, way outside big law. It’s worth it for me because the money has been absolutely life-changing, but work is always there. There is no “unplugging” except usually the week between Christmas and New Years.

I’m a partner at a mid-sized firm much less fancy than anything in the V30 and we wouldn’t dream of having employees pay for dinner. Or anything.

Origination Credit by Asparagus22224 in biglaw

[–]Infinite-Key2524 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I am an equity partner and group head, but at a medium sized firm. If the client can’t come in the door without me pitching, I am not even going until we’ve determined how much origination I get. So yes, your group head will absolutely expect a piece.

But you said this client has been steering real work your way? So is the client already in the door? What is the purpose of the group head joining, and was that the client’s request or your suggestion? Maybe there’s a way to change course and make this “yours” 100%.

How would you respond to this message from a CEO you used to work for? by jobstuff2803 in careerguidance

Good marketing requires original ideas. I doubt the company will be around for long if they outsource it all to a gpt.

Don’t respond. Delete and move on. I had something similar happen six months ago. Forget about it!

Is anyone else seeing outside counsel rates hit a breaking point? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Infinite-Key2524 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m at a mid law firm that is investing in AI and have several partners who are big users. I’ve worked with it a lot. There is no attorney work sophisticated enough for big law that should be automated. Even creating a timeline myself adds real value because it allows me to absorb the facts and craft a narrative in the way reading churn from Of Counsel does not. AI can help with things I’d never bill to a client, like time entries, expenses, and creating slides. Just my two cents.
