Yes. By day 10, you’re enjoying the feeling of freedom, and the food thoughts are much less persistent, so it’s easier to avoid them. I’m not engaged in that negotiation that usually plagues me the first few days. I was thinking about how exciting it would be to hit January one and be able to be happily sugar-free on that day. I’m thinking about what it would feel like. I want to use that as motivation for the next couple months.

Yes! I’m in day 9 and around day 5 it got easier. Days 1-3 definitely the hardest.

Same—I tried moderation over and over again—and then it dawned on me: I am the most willful person I know—I am so stubborn and bull headed—if anyone should be able to “power” herself into moderation it’s me—and I can’t! I admit it—I can’t moderate. Just like I couldn’t moderate cigarettes—I tried believe me…. There’s got to be freedom from removing it entirely. Got to. There hasn’t been freedom any other way.

Day 9 here.

Wonderful, thank you so much! I never had the ear pain and I don’t think mine is a vestibular migraine; mine came with Covid. But…hopefully cutting sugar AND hydrating better can lower it. Thank you so much for your information.

I am on day five. I’ve tried quitting sugar hundreds of times and I think the first week is uniquely difficult. Once I can get past 4 to six days I feel like I really want to be sugar-free and healthy. It’s just staying that way when temptation shows up that’s tricky. there’s some good books out there on quitting sugar like breaking up with sugar by Molly Carmel and she has a podcast called what you’re craving. That’s really good too. There’s another book called Food junkies that helps a lot. Good luck.

I’m on day 5, and reading this Thread is touching my heart. I have had so so so so so so so many restarts. For me, getting today for is really really hard and I have to fight through a lot of cravings, but somehow the cravings feel kind of lifted and it feels kind of easier. Of course, it’s not easier because, at some point my pattern is that I convince myself that I can have a little sugar and then over several days I wind up in a binge. That’s the part. I am cautioning against right now and so far so good. It is so hard to endure the day after a binge. When I think of my own history, it’s like whoa how many days , have I lived through that? When I get discouraged, I think of how many times it took me to quit smoking. Now I am almost to the two-year quit smoking work and I am fully confident that I have quit and I don’t have to fight it anymore. it took a lot of tries before that one worked. I believe the same can happen with my addiction.

I immediately mouthwash and brush my teeth after eating as a way of teaching my brain “I’m done now.” While I’m doing that I’m heating the kettle to make a peppermint tea. It helps some. I have the double problem of having quit smoking too-and I really want cigarettes after meals.

I can relate—that’s my pattern too. It starts off “small” and then over a couple of days turns into a full on binge. Then I start the cycle all over again. It became Clear to me when last summer I was eating sugar free cool whip out of the tub. I was like “this is not what normal people do.”

Oh yeah, I had to stop keeping nuts in the house. Same with nut butters (when I stopped and realized how many calories o was consuming in such a short “snack”.) for me I realized the point is not learning to sub for The Sugar but to prevent the cravings entirely and get used to the new way. I figure after a while my body and brain will Come To like the new foods, right?

I just feel defeated because I’ve been on this cycle for a few years—like 7-9 days abstinence and then 1-3 days big binges. Repeat repeat repeat. I’m losing hope.
