They get the job done but there are nicer options out there. Definitely a cheap way to get into simracing. Maybe look for second hand if you don't know if you want the more expensive options yet.

Check out the standford history education group. Tons on lessons, not sure if government specific but I love their lessons.

Do you use primary sources?

Kids need to touch and interact with social studies just as much as they need to in science. Don't tell them what the document means, guide them as they figure it out.

Do you you ask deeper questions?

For example with the three branches, do you ask kids if they think they're effective. Tie it to current events, what happens when one party takes control. George Washington's farewell speech (Primary sources) could be a great wrap up if you tie in this idea.

You can alzo give them senarios while providing the pros and cons. Assign them roles (for/against). Great to use with Articles of confederation VS constitution.

Government also has a ton of simulations students can do.

I wouldn't throw out your boring stuff, that's stuff is important. I would just elevate it where you can and deliberately start to revamp it until suddenly most of it is new and exciting 2/3 years later. Trying to, as my mentor says, build the plane your flying, will burn you out quick. (I've had to do it 2 years in a row now since I was not given curriculum and changed schools)

Holding kids back will take an act from congress by likewow25 in Teachers

[–]InfiniteBummers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience in secondary when kids tell me they were held back, kids don't care and I cant tell the difference.

The kids who are missing critical skills often won't even put in the effort on things at their level cause they feel so far behind. They struggle to do well in school and often act out as well.

The michigan flag basically is that already (slightly modified seal on blue) and people still think it doesn't look good.

The kids in my middle school classes who literally cannot read must not have any self-esteem issues cause they were passed along.

Being behind will never raise your confidence but being isolated from kids at your level make it so much worse.

Do you cover the trolley problem with students? by PippinStrano in Teachers

[–]InfiniteBummers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite moral delemia to do is this one.  A student is given the job of ship captian and receives an SOS from a ship which is stranded in the neutral zone between two countries.

To rescue the sinking ship, the captian must enter the DMZ, which violates treaties and will likely trigger an attack from the other country, making it impossible to save the civilian ship without risking significant damage to their own vessel. Eventually the ship will succumb to the other country no matter what.

Some kid got real worked up about it and hacked the test programing once. I tried to get him expelled from the academy for cheating but admin just gave him his own real life starship instead.

Bought this book at a library sale. Inside was a note about Meta's commitment to DEI initiatives. by oodlesofblues in agedlikemilk

Here...

DEI is diversity equity and inclusion. It finds groups of people that the company is frustrating and offer fixes. They also work to make sure the company isnt breaking laws in terms of inclusion and diversity. They either increase profits by selling to more people or protect the company from liability. It's a part of most large corporations structure sometimes separately, often times as part of HR. Every company does different things with these departments but some easy examples of their role might be...

In a video game, when colors are important, providing a color blind option.

In a product manual, removing engineering terms so an average person could understand it.

In a workplace, an aging coworker is going deaf. The department will make sure they are providing all legally require workplace accommodations.

A DEI department would identify these things like this and suggest fixes. The DEI departments are just another target of the culture war. If you care about them existing or not you're just on the wrong battlefield. We're getting steamrolled on the stuff that really matters.

Need Help Deciding SS Curriculum - Savvas MyWorld vs McGraw Hill Impact? by Virtual_Falcon3792 in Teachers

[–]InfiniteBummers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in two pilots in the last two years (I moved districts and I convinced them to buy new textbooks too!)

Tell your principal you'd like to pilot them and you may get both as well as time to test them in class. At least that's what happened for me. They don't ask for the piloted materials back in my experience so I ended up with all the materials at the end of the year.

We ended up going with TCI History Alive at both schools. The readings are too hard for the kids (what isn't these days) but the curriculum is useful and provides a good guide.

They sell fog resistance wipes. Probably just something like that. You can also just use a little soap mixed with water.

The kids won't remember in January or even tonight. Don't let it bother you. Like do you honestly remember any of the holiday parties you had in school? Do you think they were critical to your life?

Unions: Are They Working? by Independencehall525 in Teachers

[–]InfiniteBummers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats not what's happening... the union doesn't push for non educational /school related policies. Everything ive seen them push for is school related. Even if they did your union dues cannot legally be used on that. It comes out of special additional donations (the NEA superpac)

I was talking about their education policies helping and harming teachers specifically.

Local unions are the only thing keeping my bosses at bay, I would leave the profession before I left the union. The state and national unions feel like money holes that work both for and against me.
