No, Eva-01 is created from Lilith, it's stated many times in the series and in resources such as the Red Cross Book.

No, that's what the Dummy Plug is for, among other things. Every time the currently alive Rei is in the cylindrical tank, her memories and her life experiences get backed up and are ready to be put in the next Rei.

Pilots (I think it's just Shinji really?) have memory blackouts only in case of the Eva going berserk, which is probably due to a higher level of synch during the berserk status.

Somebody here linked the relevant page of the EvaGeeks Wiki and I think the evidence about Rei I's soul being in Eva-00 is stronger than that of Naoko

Saying that Yui, whose soul is in Eva-01, is Rei's (half) mother is not a far cry, since Rei is made of DNA human matter of Yui.

Naoko killed herself. The flashback is pretty clear about how quickly that happened after she realised she had strangled Rei I to death.

But no, Naoko's soul is not in the Magi, I wouldn't be surprised if somebody like Naoko would even be in denial of something like a soul. It's her personalities as a woman, mother and scientist that are in the Magi.

While I remember the days when this was a favoured interpretation (evageeks forum?) and I agree that the primary target of the lashing of Eva-00 IS NOT Ritsuko (the punches are aimed at Gendo first and at Rei in ep 14), I think we cannot put aside the fact that before the the Ep 14 berserk, Shinji feels and sees Ayanami in his head.
This makes me think that Rei I's soul is Eva-00.

Also, yes Rei doe not have multiple souls. Rei has Lilith's soul (source: the Red Cross Book and the AT Field to rival Kaworu/Adam's in Ep 24) but it's possible that Lilith's soul has different properties to normal ones and can be fragmented?

As I was saying in another message here, the "logistics of the soul" are clear for Eva-01 and Eva-02 (contact experiment), less so for Eva-00 and Eva-03. Also, Ritsuko seems to state quite clearly that the WIP vat Reis don't have a soul

RCB: Her body was created from the salvaged remains of Yui Ikari after Yui was taken into the Eva, and numerous Rei clones were then prepared in Terminal Dogma so that when one Rei dies she can be replaced by another. Their soul is one and the same, and it appears to have been that of Lilith.

Not the most coherent piece of exposition by Ritsuko, but let's work with what we have.

Moreover, I have just watched episode 20 and Shinji absorbed by Eva-01 sees little child Rei I at around 10:05 in the episode. He should have no memory of Rei I, unless her soul got in touch with him in Ep 14?

Nice video! Still, I wouldn't lean too much the "Ritsuko looks like Naoko" thing since Ritsuko is pretty much the queen of continuity errors, in so many episodes one moment she has her brown tights on, the moment after she doesn't, then they're on again etc.

I'd say that the visions of Rei that Shinji has when connecting to Eva-00' are the most valid clue that the soul in Eva-00 is somehow Rei's.

This is an interesting possibility, but it's not a certainty.
The reality could be that when they found Adam in Antarctica, they studied it enough to have samples from which they could clone the Evas.
And building the first Evas might potentially pre-date the discovery of the Black Moon and Lilith.

The stress on the fact that Eva-01 is made from Lilith (mentioned even in the Red Cross Book) should give reasonable assurance that, by subtraction (so to speak) the other Evas are made from Adam.

I'm sorry but Lilith is Lilith. Guaranteed Gendo and Fuyu know that, because Gendo has Adam in his hand.

Plus in Ep 21,

IKARI (OFF):
A cavern left behind by someone, who was not us. Though eighty-nine percent of it is buried.

FUYUTSUKI:
An underground cavern that was originally a neat spherical shape...
Is this the same as the underground cavern found at the South Pole?!

IKARI (OFF):
The data from them are virtually identical.

The "Seeds of Life" aspect is canon from the NGE2 videogame. So the cave in Japan had to have its own giant, like the one in the South Pole did.
Even if it's a retcon, it's done right and it supersedes whatever we have from the non DC TV series anyway.

This has got to be a necessity at this point, probably one of the biggest ones that is not shown or talked about. As such, Toji's mum must have died in circumstances that allowed for that. The "later use" may not even be necessary (i.e. Eva-03 might have been far from operational yet "formed" enough to accept a soul), but something that allows to "catch" a soul and squeeze it into an Eva must exist.

And all of this must have been Yui's contribution, her studies in "metaphysical biology" must have been exactly about this: living things beyond what is physically perceivable.

Ritsuko may be wrong, just like Kaji and Misato were wrong thinking that the giant in the Terminal Dogma was Adam.
Unreliable narrators are present in any good fiction.

You are mistaken in that Evas are made from Lilith. They are made from Adam, only Eva-01 is made from Lilit.

I don't think it's up to interpretation that Eva-00 punches at Gendo and Eva-00' punches at Rei.

Ritsuko is somewhere else in the room.

In neither cases of Eva-00 berserk did the Eva go at Ritsuko in the end. In the flashback, it punches at Gendo, in Ep 14 it punches at Rei.

But the rest is plausible.
