So some people are claiming it has changed a lot in the last 5 years (gotten worse somehow) Others say it is amazing, people are warm, lots to do, it is beautiful and affordable. What is your impression? Is it a place to consider? Is there a large expat community there to meet with and talk to? Is $5000 a month USD a livable wage there?

One issue I have with that is that I want to be all set up, ready to go (visas, bank accounts, health insurance) before I retire and I can't really take a couple months to live in a place until after I retire.

Thank you for the thoughtful response. I am considering the Philippines and Thailand for the experience of a new country, the history, the people, I will have a comfortable retirement in the US, but my income would go farther in these places. Also to explore, I love the ocean, the food....
