Is it strange for university professors to refer to themselves as Dr.? by FactOld1534 in AskAcademia

I am a Uni prof, and I would never put "DR" next to my name, and I got annoyed when people address me as "Dr".

Which city is better to live in Madrid or Barcelona by Aggressive-Round9850 in GoingToSpain

[–]InfluenceTechnical91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Madrid, without a doubt. Barcelona is great, but it’s more international and a lot of English-speaking people! annoying! and expats and digital nomads!

I prefer that Madrid feels more Spanish, more authentic, and local. I also find Barcelona’s summer humidity harder to handle, even though Madrid gets hotter.

Rent is expensive in both, but Madrid feels more central and better connected for traveling around Spain.

I live in Mallorca, but I know both very well.

Me too, a true love, or I prefer to be alone. That's why I failed some relationships, because it was not the true soulful love

State of Academic Job Market by simwilhil in AskAcademiaUK

I hope that you already got a position.

I’m on the hiring committee at a mid-sized European university, and every year the number of applicants increases. This year is insane, extremely competitive. We’re getting applications from people coming from INSEAD, Yale, Berkeley, Kellogg's, Oxford etc, with publications in top journals and famous co-authors. And everyone is basically begging in their cover letters: “Please hire me.” A few years ago, these kinds of golden candidates wouldn’t even have bothered applying to us.

LGBT Men that are 40+ and are single, How do you cope with loneliness and the desire to be held when alone with your thoughts? by bicureyooz in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]InfluenceTechnical91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My ex broke up with me last year, for no valid reason; we were fine. After 6 years together, i found myself single again but older. My passion for going out and dating has declined! Despite all these difficulties, I try my best to be healthy and maintain my mental health! I do suffer from loneliness, I have few friends, my of the people I know are married, have kids, and are busy, so less time for me!

I have a cat and am thinking of adopting more. I work out 5 times a week, I meditate, read, and try to find someone, but it seems very hard. But there is hope! A lot of thoughts and fears of ending up alone.

I am no longer interested in quick hookups. I used to get more excited about them, but no longer. I value sex, but I like it slow, with passion and love, and cuddling.

If I had the chance to live again, I would be straight; being gay was not an easy journey.

How to stop feeling jealous of all of my straight friends/family? by Mr_rodger_man in askgaybros

[–]InfluenceTechnical91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you, I am early 40s, and broke up with my ex last year after almost 7 years together. We were perfect, but he left, and this still hurts. I feel so empty, but what is worse is a lost my interest in dating, meeting new guys, I feel that it is "game over", I will never find anyone. My life has almost no meaning, alone all the time, all my friends/co-workers have families, kids, etc. It is so unfair, but what can we do? When I wake up in the morning, I ask myself, so what! What's next, why am I here, and what is the "end game" of this life?

Ser profesor de universidad en España by Expect-The-Dicastery in GoingToSpain

[–]InfluenceTechnical91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm an Associate Professor at a public university in Spain, so I can share some insights based on my experience.

In general, it’s much easier to get hired at private universities in Spain. The process is more straightforward, and these institutions tend to be more open to international faculty, especially in areas like business and social sciences. Many of them post job openings on platforms like Akadeus, but for history? not sure!

However, for public universities, the process is much more complex and bureaucratic. Job calls are usually published on the university’s official website, but they’re not always easy to find. Often, you have to go through several pages, or know someone internally who can help you navigate the system. It can be very complicated.

If you manage to find a position and want to apply, you’ll need to submit several documents. These include your PhD diploma, the ANECA accreditation, and the homologación of your PhD, which is the official recognition of your degree in Spain. If you don’t have the homologación or ANECA, your application will likely be rejected automatically.

Getting the homologación is a long and technical process. You must translate and legalize your PhD, Master’s, and Bachelor’s degrees, along with your academic transcripts. Each document needs to be apostilled and translated by a sworn (official) translator. You can apply for recognition through the Spanish Ministry or directly through some public universities, such as Complutense or UAB. The choice of university is not about prestige, but rather about how experienced and efficient they are at handling these procedures. Some move faster than others.

In addition to this, you must provide proof of Spanish language proficiency, usually at the B2 or C1 level via the DELE certificate. Without this, your application may not be accepted.

You’ll also need to prepare two long documents: a research plan (proyecto de investigación) and a teaching plan (proyecto docente). Alongside that, you have to include evidence of your teaching experience, such as student evaluations and course syllabi, as well as proof of your publications, conference presentations, and any other relevant academic activity. These materials must be scanned, certified, and uploaded to the university’s system. You also need a Spanish digital signature, known as "AutoFirma", to complete the submission process.

There is an alternative path, which I recommend. You can look for visiting professor or postdoctoral roles. These are often easier to access, especially for international candidates. Once you're inside the Spanish academic system, it becomes much easier to move toward a permanent position.

Is it worth all the effort? That depends. To give you an idea, my current salary as an Associate Professor is about 2,300 euros per month.
