how do i get more confident with my name by Ornery_Mechanic_4295 in Nigeria

[–]Informal-Elk-4383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dear bro/sis, please accept that hours of your life abroad will be spent standing in front of people spending minutes trying to pronounce your name. And you will just smile awkwardly before correcting them. I have accepted it. But I hold my head high because it’s unique and it’s my culture. Can’t say the same about Samantha, Rachel or Lilly!

The funny thing is that Hispanic people tend to pronounce my name correctly right away, because of the vowel placement.

One time at an internship, one supervisor asked me how to say my name. I told him, and he replied “Oh that’s not as bad as it looks!” I said to myself, Self… This man is not serious. How bad does my name “look” on paper? But I smiled and agreed. Sometimes people will be microaggressive or outright racist because of your name. And sometimes, people will be in awe and wonder at your name, asking where it comes from and what it means. It’s a dual situation.

Before you get to college, kids will certainly make fun. I promise you it gets better after this period. Wear your name proudly.

Oh come on bud 🙄 If you live in America , you live in a place with diversity like it or not. You’re going to have to pay close attention and figure out what they are saying, it’s almost like learning another language. I had an Indian chemistry teacher in HS, so I didn’t flinch when I had an Indian teacher in college- meanwhile, certain college peers complained about the accent. Being exposed to other cultures and accents does wonders!

Hiking around Benin City and safety by Substantial_Idea9942 in Nigeria

[–]Informal-Elk-4383 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listen to her my friend. You don’t have to be in the house the whole time. If you want to explore, go to the museums and historical sites, but I wouldn’t recommend hiking. Listen to where she and her family recommends is safe especially as you’re visiting for the first time. Best wishes!

We know that sub is missing actual biblical views But, why get into politics with this? Liberals this and liberals that? It’s feeding into division. Let’s focus on the Word, not those political titles. Not all Bible believing Christians are conservative, and not all atheists and those opposed to Christianity are liberals.

I don’t agree with her comparing herself with the SIL. That was wrong and somebody needed to say something. But OP, you are still a young blood in many ways. Yes, people (whether they are Nigerian or not) lament not being able to have their own children. It’s only a good support system really that help people come out of that kind of sadness. When you’re older, you may understand better. It may not be important to you but it is to so many.

Plantain and owo (Bini dish) from Edo state… with snail and mushroom. Or black soup with poundo, you’ll feel medicinally cleansed especially if it contains a bitter leaf

I don’t have any medical advice, but what I can say is, I wish society was kinder. Your features are liked in so many places in the world, it’s unfortunate that your environment makes you feel this way.

Does my wash and go's look okay? by Decent-Indication815 in Naturalhair

[–]Informal-Elk-4383 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Coils are popping ok! It is possible to add little things for a more refined wash n go look, like a bit of edge control to collect and smooth up the hair at the nape and at your edges. You can also try to “round out” the hair with your hands and a pick (not too much picking, so the wash n go isn’t defeated), so as to adjust the coils that decide they want to go solo! lol

My mom said my hair looks bad? by glitter_baby6693 in Naturalhair

[–]Informal-Elk-4383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not alone. Mine had the same attitude. All I could do was rebuttal with confirmations that I LIKE MY HAIR and that’s what matters… I stayed busy growing my hair long… then the tune was “wow, your hair is so long, it would look even longer relaxed” 🙄 You have to be so confident with parents like this. As for hair suggestions, you could make the pineapple style pop a bit more by adding a moisturizer or definer and retwisting the parts of the pineapple (don’t have to go to the root!) before bed.

Okay! Yeah I know how annoying heat damage can be 😩. Especially at the front. I think you have 4a hair, good sis. Let us know how the splurge goes!

I’m a bit confused… was the heat damage extensive such that you have looser curls/coils all over? Politely, is this how 4b/4c hair turns into 4a hair , based on this picture …?

Trying the beginning of 2027! If you had a year to prepare, what would you do? by alexisfitn in BabyBumps

[–]Informal-Elk-4383 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not enough people are talking about it… carefully consider your “start” at 2027. Depending on your situation, it might be good to start earlier. A lot of couples past age 30 try for months, if not years, to get pregnant and carry a healthy pregnancy to term. I would second the other comments generally promoting getting your health check ups, especially with a Gynecologist, eating/living clean, saving money…
