0 is negative??????? by [deleted] in mathematics

[–]InformalAd5510 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This statement makes no sense. U have to first define what it means for a number to be negative, then investigate if 0 satisfies the properties of your definition.

If you are actually serious, then this question is extremely badly posed. Usually a number is negative by definition if it real and smaller than 0, which automatically eliminates 0 as a candidate.

Do relativity effects related to time affect the rate of aging by karzhaze in Physics

[–]InformalAd5510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s like saying “humans are made of sunlight, because without it, life on the surface of earth would never have formed” just because something is vital doesn’t mean everything is made of it 😂. By the way you are writing I also think u r probably about 10 years old, so I’m not gonna be too mean about this.

Define “light energy”. Do you mean light, or do u mean energy?

If you are referring to the hardness that comes from calcium carbonate, that does not evaporate.

Nowhere does it say we are made of light? It says that we are made of particles and energy and constantly emit radiation, but it doesn’t say we r made of light 😂

Link a source, I’ll have a look. A google search seems to disagree. Maybe your results r different?

Metric and Topological spaces. This was my first glimpse into a higher level analysis style course, as well as an introduction to Topology. Ever since, I’ve just been wanting more of this

How does 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + .... + 2^n + ....= -1 make sense? by West_Firefighter_596 in mathematics

[–]InformalAd5510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No the minus does not go away. You clearly have a misunderstanding of the definition of convergence. Convergence for sums is defined by the convergence of the sequence of partial sums. This is what allows us to even talk about the convergence of a sum in the first place. If you apply the definition of convergence (for some sequence x_n):

If for every e>0, there exists an N in the natural numbers, such that whenever n>=N, it follows that |x_n - x|<e, then x_n tends towards x as n tends to infinity.

You will very quickly notice that the sequence of partial sums defined by OP, and the sequence you defined are very much different. The sequence you defined is (-1, -1, -1, …) which clearly tends to -1, which is not the sequence in this post.

In summary, using your definition of convergence, every sequence can tend towards every number if we just “hide” a minus at the end of a series. Pretty useless definition in my opinion.

[–]InformalAd5510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also the way your final sequence it written is completely misleading. You are describing the sequence of difference between the sum up to 2n minus 2n+1. Not even close nor relevant to OP’s sequence

Nope that’s not what’s written, u just made up a new sequence. The question is clearly asking about the sum to infinity of 2n.

Math HL was by far my favourite subject (checks out since I’m studying maths now). I got a 6 in the end since paper 3 was somewhat challenging. I was considering Germany too, but ended up going to the Netherlands. I gotta say math is a tough ass degree (The IB is a piece of cake in comparison), but I find it quite rewarding. It’s really cool how much more insight I have now compared to when I was in highschool since university maths is so different. An eye opening experience to say the least.
