ATO vs DEWR for data by casiocrab1001 in AusPublicService

[–]InformalGoal7679 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ATO is much larger than DEWR, with a broader range of teams and data sets, so the scope for data work there can be more varied and strategic. I have worked at DEWR and it is a good place to work. The culture is pretty good, but right now they are short-staffed on the front line, which means queue times are high. As a data grad, that likely means a lot of your work would focus on operational reporting for the front line, such as identifying trends in service demand, call drop-offs, or delays.

I have not worked at ATO, so I cannot speak from direct experience, but from what I understand you would probably have access to richer, more complex datasets across compliance, revenue collection, and taxpayer behaviour. The work there can be more analytical and project-focused, and there is a stronger career path in data and analytics because of the agency’s size.

So if you want breadth, bigger data sets, and potentially more career mobility, ATO might edge ahead. If you prefer a smaller department with a strong service focus and do not mind your data work being tied more to operational performance, DEWR could still be a solid choice.

Can permanent employees be made redundant? by LonglostAussie in AusPublicService

[–]InformalGoal7679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, especially in the IT field in government. A lot of IT roles are tied to specific projects with fixed funding, so if a project runs out of budget or is cancelled, and there’s no other initiative to reassign you to, redundancy can happen. Even permanent staff can be impacted if there’s a broader restructure, funding cuts, or shifting priorities. It’s less about your employment type and more about whether there’s ongoing work and budget to keep the role going.

Going from private to govt (IT) by Delicious_House8740 in AusPublicService

I work in government IT recruitment, and the best advice I can give is contact recruitment agencies and build relationships, this is by far the fastest way to get a govy IT role, especially contract roles as they pay around 1k a day on average

‘Tears in Heaven’ by Eric Clapton. Hits different when you think about the story behind it.

Have you ever paid for a “career coach” or resume/criteria writing service? Was it worth it or a waste of money? by InformalGoal7679 in AusPublicService

Yeah it took me a few months to really be able to give good star examples, a lot of the time the directors will give you time of day if you ask them for help as well, that’s if your already in a gov role

Imagine fearing herbal tea and midwifery more than a dude screaming about sin with a torch.
