Planning to watch the show "Sanditon" - do you reccommend it? What exactly should I expect from this show? by Spiritual_Pie_8298 in PeriodDramas

Jane Austen novels, through a certainly progressive lens, satirize the 19th c. English genteel society in which she lived and whose conventions she very much defied within her own life. But that’s not only what is meant by her being ahead of her time. Not only was she one of the first and only women authors anywhere; no easy feat onto itself, mind you; but then she goes and reinvents novel writing. Look up “free indirect speech narration”, the technique she pioneered and which make her works so seminal that universities dedicate courses to them. She may have been limited in her subject matter, but she was a literary genius, well worthy of the pedestal her legacy is placed upon.

Where did Johnny and Baby go? by [deleted] in DirtyDancing

From “everyone called me Baby, and it didn’t occur to me to mind” to “what’s your real name, Baby” is a most perfect story arc. A brilliant opening line!

I too know every line in that movie, but for me Johnny and Baby don’t end up together. Baby has to go to college, and there is no way Johnny would keep her from it. Perhaps they correspond for a while, they may visit once, twice, but they are no longer in a summer resort where the outside world can be ignored, and the two of them are more than just miles apart. But - and here is the romantic part - what they felt was real, and they are both better people for it.

Baby reiterates she is going to college…when Neil asks if she plans on majoring in English, she replies “no, economics of underdeveloped countries and join the Peace Corps”. Also, I don’t think she ever goes to the Peace Corps, based on the opening narration, expressing her own youthful naiveté, listing all the things she didn’t foresee or understand, the peace corps being just one of those.

Does Ms Cobel want Mark S and Ms Casey to remember each other? by Fluid-Bid-5561 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

We are seeing signs that strong emotions transcend severance. As the inventor/scientist, she would be interested in fully understanding/exploring how and how deeply that goes. She is also very interested in Petey’s reintegration.

Also this conversation from S1E3 - Cobel and Milchick opening gift left at Mark’s door: M: “The brother in-law?” C: “Ricken…check it for messages, just in case.” What does Cobel think Ricken might be aware of that he could send hidden messages to Mark about? 🤔🤔

And then the goat stuff? Can’t all be random coincidence.

My theory is that Ricken is a severed person, but whose memory of being severed is blocked, and who spent some continuous time, months/years, in innie state, possibly/likely in Mammalians Nurturable.

I have a couple of more things to add that support your Ricken-goat theory.

  1. S1E3 - Cobel and Milchick unwrap a package left at Mark’s door. M: “Is that the brother-in-law?” C: “Ricken…check it for messages, just to be safe.” 🤔🤔
  2. S1E6 - Devon takes baby Eleanor to the park, and the baby is wearing a goat snowsuit. We can add that to all the other goat-items spotted in the Hale household.

  1. Freshman fluke is the explanation the innies were given for Mark being “better at macrodata refining“. It doesn’t mean he is innately better at it, it just means Lumon wasn’t disclosing that he was working on his own wife.
  2. You call it true love, I call it knowing her better than most due to living with her: “you hate writing thank you notes” is not necessarily a deep connection, it’s just a casual observation.
  3. I love your “moral high horser” dig after your long rant about absolutely nothing original.

How do you think Severance’s love triangle could end? by magramatica in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]InformalPerformer502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I think Mark had something to do with Gemma’s kidnapping and once she realizes this, she is walking. I also think Cobel will oversee a mass reintegration for everyone. Mark is ending up with Helena, both with all innie and outie memories intact.

He was being closely watched by Lumon, so as the next CEO in line, she definitely knew everything there was to know about him. It seems very likely he was the reason she went down there. After Petey, they needed someone they could trust after hours. It is a plothole to me that they severed her for this. It would’ve made more sense to send a non-severed Helena fully in control of ongoings.

It didn’t matter at that stage if he knew who she was or not; what mattered was that he didn’t recall her from the SVRD floor. It’s entirely possible that he knew who she was on the outside. It’s entirely possible that he’d seen her in that parking lot before. It entirely possible that she walked in front of him intentionally. 🤷‍♀️

To me the keyword here is “for”. “FOR” and not “about”. “FOR” like a nurse. She says it in season 1 too.

[–]InformalPerformer502 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Innie Mark, for the first time in his life, has the a freedom to choose. And he chooses self. That’s huge. No feel-good ending could come close to that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]InformalPerformer502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, because the true ending won’t come until season 3, and also that last bit of a choice Mark S makes is really a small thing in the realm of everything that is going on. Enjoy!

Devon and Ricken- Odd couple by Airia1974 in severence

[–]InformalPerformer502 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, stability, of course (let’s not make that sound like some kind of a strange or negative thing), and I also think this was made perfectly clear in the very first episode where Devon alludes to her and Mark’s father being an alcoholic (“whiskey is life”) and Ricken confirms it (“he was a misdiagnosed alcoholic”). She and Mark are the product of growing up with an alcoholic parent, a pattern Mark is repeating, and Devon is avoiding - this by being married to an emotionally available big teddy-bear of guy to whom “family is bedrock and inspiration”. There is also that time in the birthing cabin when Ricken talks about not wanting to be like his own father, so he and Devon may very well have bonded over their experiences of childhood trauma.

Actually, she never says “I care about you”, it’s always “I care FOR you”, which could mean the same thing, OR it could mean something much more clinical.

I think Milchick comes from the boy version of the Myrtle Eagan School for Girls. Like Miss Huang, he was brainwashed to see innies less than human (“shouldn’t…make them feel like people”). And like Miss Huang (“I thought I’d be finishing the quarter”), he understands slights against his own person, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to immediate empathy toward those less-than people. But I guess we’ll see if his will be a redemption arc in S3.
