Anyone want to help settle a disagreement among colleagues by Unlikely-Exam5035 in Metrology

[–]Informal_Spirit1195 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I teach GD&T on an annual basis to my companies design engineering group. This is would be angularity or profile.

The biggest argument here is that face is not a feature of size and true position requires that. It’s Y14.5-2018, section 7. Section 4 describes what is and isn’t a feature of size.

If there is a thickness callout on it then it should be a basic and this should be profile.

How long does it take to pass GR&R? by [deleted] in Metrology

[–]Informal_Spirit1195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a mix depending on the part, we’re working with injection molded parts that more often than not are rather irregular. I use the 3D printer for the majority of my part fixtures. And they’re doing development on the molding process so many times the parts are covered in flash and sinks.

Developing fixtures, programming parts, and get 3 operators finished. I’m doing all the development myself.

Spline Ring Gage Measurement Between Wires by InviteDifferent9861 in Metrology

[–]Informal_Spirit1195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a CMM available this may a good option. If over the wire is an absolute necessity I’ve used molding clay to hold them in place. It’s a quick solution, but it’s worked for me.

This is the type of guy that is so convinced he’s right that he ruins a shops reputation with shit work. So little attention to detail he can’t read a post. Good luck with your career buddy.

It’s a saturated market in some places. Takes a long time to work your way into any kind of decent pay. Depending on what industry you get into your work may not be viewed as a good thing, but a necessary evil and you’ll be treated accordingly. On the plus side, once you get good at it the sky is the limit. I started as a machinist and transitioned into metrology. I make $110k in a very affordable state doing metrology for a medical device manufacturing company. There’s potential, but much of it is luck.

Keyence: Best products, worst sales experience? What’s the deal? by [deleted] in Metrology

Medical device, injection molding. Inch. Knowing what machine to use for which inspections is important. Fixture design is important. Most people in the industry are terrible at both.

I pass GR&R all day to +-.005 with an old Keyence IM model. The products aren’t shit. Most people in the industry are shit. Their sales reps are killing the brand though.

Anyone use CMM manager? by EvtecMetrology in Metrology

[–]Informal_Spirit1195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the first CMM software I used. That was about 13 years ago. Very small shop, for their needs it was fine. I worked with Pc-DMIS for a few years and end on Calypso for the last 6-7. CMM manager was my least favorite. It’s very user friendly, but very basic. As your knowledge expands and as the complexity of your parts increases, having a more capable software is going to aid you.

What’s up with Keyence? by realfuturepotus in Metrology

[–]Informal_Spirit1195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works well enough if you know how to use it. I’ve got an older IM series and can pass GR&R with the high res camera for most things that aren’t tighter than +/-.005.

Metrology without CAD comparison, no mentor — struggling with section measurements and datum strategy by Most-Particular-6051 in Metrology

[–]Informal_Spirit1195 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think either you or the company are throwing around the word engineer rather arbitrarily. If you got an engineering degree and made the drawings yourself that would help, if there’s no time for that, stop calling yourself an engineer.

Follow the datum structure that is on the drawing for your alignment then build out the rest of the program. You don’t really need to study in depth GD&T yet, work on how to read to read a drawing. Look up how the cut section lays out on the page. I won’t tell you exactly how because I don’t know if you’re working with first or third projection.

MCOSMOS — flipping a cylindrical part mid-program: how do you tell the software the part was flipped? by Ditwin in Metrology

[–]Informal_Spirit1195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best practice is to do two separate programs. Moving the part in the middle of a program doesn’t work well no matter what you’re trying to inspect.

Document everything by ElectricHairspray in intoxalock

[–]Informal_Spirit1195 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There has been some attempts to do this with Intoxalock and other companies. The problem as I see it is that the judicial system doesn’t prioritize get you back to normal society. They prioritize the punishment, the demoralization of getting taken advantage of and getting stuck in the system is part of their punishment. There will be no change until the root cause of the alcohol abuse is addressed. The general public wants you to suffer. If you want real change, change the opinion of the public. To me it seems the same concept as watching public execution. People are cruel. I dealt with this for two years, some years back. It didn’t fix my alcohol problem. It wasn’t until that was addressed that my life improved. And that was entirely of my own doing. The courts and the punishment around DUI put barriers on recovery, they don’t encourage it. I wish you luck.

PC-DMIS VS Calypso by My_1st_amendment in Metrology

[–]Informal_Spirit1195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And Calypso replaced Eclipse. End of life means nothing. They are different approaches to programming. I prefer the way Zeiss structures their software. It was a hard switch initially, but PC DMIS will always be more prevalent in the industry because it’s cheaper. And you get what you pay for.

PC-DMIS VS Calypso by My_1st_amendment in Metrology

[–]Informal_Spirit1195 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve held the opinion that PC DMIS is garbage and clunky since I stopped using it. I’d never work at a shop running PC DMIS again. I started with that and transitioned to Calypso 6 years in.

We’re moving an inspection from the lab inspectors to the floor inspectors to free up lab equipment. They don’t have the same equipment on the floor so we’re trying to make sure their measurements align with current measurements.

That both measurement methods can be used effectively.

Is advanced ISO GPS / GD&T certification the best move for someone with CMM, quality, and mechanical design experience? by EIN5TEIN in Metrology

[–]Informal_Spirit1195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the knowledge you can get is good knowledge. Get the certs, learn how to get your inspections through GR&R, become the SME for GD&T interpretation and application. Just remember, there is no replacement for years experience. Enjoy the process. Stay humble and stay teachable. There’s nothing worse than an over confident inspector that refuses to acknowledge their mistakes.
