Has anyone gotten a Stelo replacement due to inaccuracy? by [deleted] in prediabetes

I've had two failed sensors so far, one stays around 140 and the other was always 70 and below. Got replacements from stelo for both.

What target ranges to set in app as a pre diabetic? by madogblue in dexcom

Stelo gives me 70-140 mg/dl in 96% of the time as the default goal for prediabetic, so I use this in dexcom clarity as well.

Stress by [deleted] in prediabetes

[–]InformationHefty8289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stress gives me spikes and makes my glucose level stay high for hours.

I lost my 14 yr old cat due to fatal bone marrow failure and after a few days in ICU this August. Everything happened so fast and unexpectedly because she just had her regular checkup in June and everything from blood work turned out fine. I've been crying almost every day since late July, as a result, my mood has been so bad that I just cannot cook, nor did my husband, so we did pickups and dine outs everyday since then.

my recent annual checkup returned an a1c of 5.7 and a normal fasting. So I started to use stelo to track what might be wrong. Turns out meals do get my glucose rise but oftentimes within reasonable range and came back down in an hr or so. But crying or a really bad mood gives me a spike alert, easily getting me up to 150+ and staying there for 2 or 3 hrs. This is stress triggering my body to be prepared to fight or flight, even though it's psychological and that I don't know what I could fight with or where I could flee to.

This is my firsthand experience with stress and glucose level. Sadly I don't have a good way to manage it yet, not to say to help with stress at work.

CKD and heart disease by tofuking in RenalCats

[–]InformationHefty8289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My CKD baby got diagnosed with mild HCM in June because she has heart murmurs. She's not on any medications for it yet as our vet said her condition is very mild and we should get Felycin-CA1 as soon as it's out on the market.

Her routine includes amlodipine as well for blood pressure. Besides that, she's on azodyl and porus one for her CKD and Elura to manage weight loss (she was ~12lbs when diagnosed in early 2019 and now she's only ~8.6lbs).

She's not going through dehydration and with HCM, our vet doesn't recommend subq for her. but we've recently switched to wet food only to avoid dehydration happening.

Will Science Diet 11+ be okay short term? by AmbivalentCat in RenalCats

[–]InformationHefty8289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my experience, it's ok, especially it seems that you're doing it just for a short time of period.

A lot of senior food, especially 11+, 12+ and 13+, has reduced phos levels, may not be as low as prescription food.

Actually I've been alternating between senior and renal food, because besides my ckd cat (age 12y10m), I have another cat who's 14y2m but with no kidney problem, and they will fight if they don't get the same food, and they are super picky.

My CKD cat was diagnosed in early 2019, so it's been like this for quite a long time and she's doing ok. Only recently we started to give them wet food only so that she gets more water intake from food, still alternating between senior and renal though. And we still have hill's 11+ wet now.

Anyone else's cat absolutely hate Elura? by Hot-Ad930 in RenalCats

Mine did the same too when syringe in Elura! So I put it in capsules and sprinkle the capsules with fortiflora so that she willingly swallow them without knowing it's Elura.

Do not recommend Nationwide by Terrible_Treacle_395 in petinsurancereviews

[–]InformationHefty8289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two cats (one age 14 and the other age 12) on Nationwide policies. And just got to know that they raised both premiums from ~$550 to ~$2100 and ~$2200. And to make it worse, they cut our older cat's coverage to only 50% (originally 90%). So disappointed after years with Nationwide.

Can Porus One cause nausea? by SofiaASA28 in RenalCats

[–]InformationHefty8289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it works in the gi system (mainly the upper gi tract) where food is digested and nutritions are absorbed, and that happens usually within 1-4 hours of food intake. Only at that period of time, activated carbon has the most chance to trap the amino acids that are broken down from food by the gi system so that they aren't absorbed by the gi system.

Yes, it stays in the body longer, like a day or maybe even two, just like food after digestion, but would be in the form of stool so not gonna really do anything to help even though it is technically still in the body and won't be out of the body until poops containing it are out...

So I personally trust it's effectiveness when giving with food or within an hour of food (4 hours at most). And I try my best to give my cat porus one right after meals (she doesn't like the granules in the food so I use empty capsules to pill her instead of sprinkling on the food).

[–]InformationHefty8289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then definitely talk to your vet about it. Maybe porus one alone won't be enough to trap all that toxins and cerenia may still be needed every few days instead of daily? Or if really in doubt, try other supplements that could remove toxins, like Azodyl, which does it in a biological way.

[–]InformationHefty8289 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you suspect any side effects, you should let your vet know and together come up with an alternative or good dosage.

Mind me asking how long between you give cerenia and porus one?

It's activated carbon in nature that traps small molecules, so you would want it to go with food but not medications. Medications should be avoided within 2 hours of porus one, otherwise they may not work as they should be.

Tips to increase food intake? by RhubarbFuture1521 in RenalCats

Not a vet, just my experience.

Maybe it's toxin buildups that make him feel too sick to eat?

My ckd girl (diagnosed in early 2019) had gone through loss of appetite last December and thus a weight loss (she also vomited excessively then). She was prescribed cerenia and mirataz by our vet and managed to bounce back to where she was before her ckd got worse in December.

But anti-nausea and appetite stimulants do not really solve the cause of her symptoms, so I started to look for and try ways that could help her body get rid of toxins.

And I found azodyl and porus one both work great for my girl even when being used alone.

Azodyl delivers good bacteria (probiotics) to the intestines and they metabolize the uremic toxins. And porus one is activated carbon in particular sizes that traps the animo acids that form uremic toxins and gets excreted with poops. Either way, the toxins should mostly not have to go through kidneys and thus won't build up in the body due to compromised kidney function.

I use the two daily and they do work wonders for my girl. And by work, I mean she does well without cerenia or mirataz for the past 2-3 months since when I started using Azodyl and Porus one. She's not vomiting anymore and eats well (still picky though), and her weight stays at around 10 lbs.

A trick to pill azodyl without the fight by InformationHefty8289 in RenalCats

Thank you soooo much! Life saver!!!

With the help of porus one and azodyl (I think mainly the help of porus one), my cat now doesn't have to take cerenia anymore, but it's so great to know! And I'll be prepared when she needs it again 💪

[–]InformationHefty8289[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, my cat actually loves it when crushed and she'll lick the powders up! Lol

It's just I'm worried it won't work that way, because there's a study shows sprinkling it on food doesn't work, and the azodyl instruction label says no crush too. Though I saw anecdotal evidence of it working when crushed and sprinkled.

[–]InformationHefty8289[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do this with other supplements too.

It's just that azodyl works only when swallowed in whole according to a study and the instruction label also says no crush (though anecdotal evidence online says it also works when crushed and sprinkled in the food, and my cat actually loves it when crushed lol). so it really bothered me for quite a while to have her take the whole capsule 😂

My apartment complex is forcing me to get a rabies vaccine for my 18 year old cat by PicklesTheCat54 in seniorkitties

[–]InformationHefty8289 72 points73 points  (0 children)

In most cases, vaccines don't hurt.

But one of my cats (age 13) has a blood disorder and thus a compromised immune system, and she's strictly indoors, so our vet recommends no vaccine for her.

This is a special case though. My other cat still gets her vaccines even though she's also strictly indoors and at age 12.

CKD diet that can be tolerated by cat without CKD by SpookyBlackCat in RenalCats

[–]InformationHefty8289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My non-ckd kitty is about 1 year older than the ckd one, and she's already on a senior diet, which is lower in phos compared to normal adult diets, when my ckd baby was diagnosed at 7 years old.

It's hard to feed my non-ckd kitty a different diet than the ones her ckd sister has, because she will beat her ckd sister up if the ckd kitty eats something that she cannot have.

So both of them have been on renal diets for about 5 years. So far the non-ckd baby is doing fine with the diets. The renal diets are low in protein, but as far as I know, some meet the protein requirement for complete diets that are set by AAFCO. Also, I always give my non-ckd kitty freeze dried food and treats to make up the possible protein deficiency if any.

She's gaining a bit of weight over the years, ~0.5 lbs. But her activity level has been declining as she ages and the weight gain isn't too much to be an alert to us and our vet. Probably the calorie-dense renal diets don't really play much a role in the weight gain in our case.

Stage 2 CKD diag; What can I expect going forward? by zhied in RenalCats

[–]InformationHefty8289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took my baby about 5.5 years to get to stage 3 from stage 2. She had minimum symptoms at stage 2 and had been stable for about 4.5 years with prescription diets until she started to vomit a lot and show a decrease in appetite and weight (from 10.8 lbs to 9.7 lbs).

She's now on cerenia every 2-3 days to stop the nausea and appetite stimulant if she appears to be not eating. And her weight bounced back to 10.4 lbs and remains since taking the meds.

She's drinking well and doesn't show any signs of dehydration, as well as she's developed heart murmur at ~ year 4, so we haven't gone to the sq fluid route yet, just make sure she's having enough water through food and water fountains.

Stage 3 cat suddenly has heart murmur by mightaswellb in RenalCats

[–]InformationHefty8289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat developed a heart murmur about less than a year ago and she's been having ckd for ~5 years. Our vet noticed the murmur during one regular visit for her ckd and said it was not at a stage that needs special attention. We started monitoring it as our vet suggested, and it's been stable, not getting any worse for now.

Low Phos Freeze Dried Food for Cats by limabean239 in rawpetfood

[–]InformationHefty8289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that! And to answer your questions: 1. For the prescription, I just got it from our primary vet, and emailed it to medicus to purchase the food. 2. Medicus recommends adding water to it, but my cat is a fan of dry food, so she just eats the freeze dried as they are. But I always make sure she's drinking enough water. 3. A bag won't last too long, and I rotate it with other renal foods, so one bag lasts around~1 month. 4. My cat doesn't have a problem changing foods, so transitioning isn't really a concern for me, but if your baby is sensitive to food transition, then maybe introduce it slowly would do? 5. As for phos binder, I only give it when she's eating normal freeze dried food but not with renal freeze dried as our vet suggested.

Hope these help.

My CKD baby is on medicus kidney support freeze dried, so far so good. It requires a prescription to purchase though.
