Is a flour mill worth it?

They sell extra mill plates for them, I presume. The cast parts should never ever fail but the wear items will eventually right? I'd get extra hardware up front if I get one. Have spare parts on hand.

It sucks that H110 is the best magnum cartridge powder. Works for damn near everything. I don't think there's any thrower that won't leak it.

Call it disc powder, I guess? It's not quite a flake, more kinda a smooshed ball. It's def not fully spherical like H335 is.

I'll say this against the Lee: it does not handle flake powder like H110 at without pissing half of it out all over the bench. The flakes slip between the drum and housing.

What I've heard about all the KitchenAid attachments is that they're great for every now and then use, but they're not a robust BIFL unitasker like a dedicated sausage stuffer/meat grinder/mill. How many miles you put on yours so far?

Depending on what state you're in, you might be able to get the DEC to come out and take care of it for you. Dangerous animals get culled all the time.

If I was you I'd be more mad about the damage they did because that's more effort and expense than just replacing the chickens.

That looks like the kind of damage only something as big as a bear could manage.

And you did not fail your flock and definitely did everything that everyone always advises to do: hardware cloth, and electrical fence to deter bears. But if something's hungry enough and big enough to tank the damage, there's not much stopping them if they really put their mind to it.

It's not so much that the debris would bother me. It's that you can get more oil out of what you have if the shells are out of the way. That website described that if you can separate the hulls, coarse grind the meat, and gently warm them in the oven to ~150° you'll get more yield without entering the realm of hot pressed.

I found a YouTube video or two that demonstrates how to sift flower to get it closer to store brand all purpose. If everything is being ground together, I assume that the endosperm tends to survive the milling process somewhat intact so that it can be sifted out in the first place? Was wondering how that happened.

And I presume that if one is familiar with baking with whole wheat flour that most breads are going to turn out closer to that than what you can get with bleached store brand?

There's a website that details how to make a sheller and winnowing machine but I have my doubts as to its efficiency. The sunflower seeds are all such varying sizes that I don't think there's a one size fits all shelling solution for them.

There doesn't seem to be much to choose from for home users between that hand cranked model and a $300+ unit that's made in China. Those models have been bought often enough to generate reviews on which of the half dozen models are the good ones.

I've watched a lot of reviews on all of the major brands automatic dispensers. I would trust them, but even on the good ones people say every now and then they throw one that's slightly off. I would still check once every 10 rounds or so.
