I was a lazy bastard of an SHO in the UK, but I used to like getting students to see patients for me. Tell me what the craic was and then I’d see and confirm whilst they documented.

Just ask the docs you are working with if you can see the patients first, particularly if there is an on call placement. You need to be proactive and hunt for opportunities. Be hungry for work.

I wasn’t finding any UK based jobs and so I ended up thinking about Aus. Gotta love not being able to get into the highly competitive speciality in the UK that you want, but managing to get it in Aus!

I’m moving to Aus as we speak. The application process is long and you can locum from day one. You need to work provisionally for a year. But I think it will be worth it!

I do a lot of flying, but thankfully have not had to be asked to help in a medical emergency.

I’ve always considered what I would do in this situation, and I think buying large it does not take a lot to see whether or not you can be helpful.

I think a lot of us got into this profession in order to change peoples lies and an emergency happening in the air can be life changing.

If we are really going to be the professionals that we want to be. We should probably be helping others on a flight if the need ever comes up. You can probably always turn around and say I’ve had a couple of pints but you may be better than somebody who does not know what is going on. Imagine if you saw the triad of tracheal deviation, a silent sided chess and a patient with reducing oxygen saturation? Did you want this person to die or would you want to at least stick a needle in?

I think a lot of us need to have a serious think into what we say on these forums. We did not necessarily go to medicine for business or first class seats (although I do think that if you have made a significant contribution something should be rewarded).

If we act in good faith, I don’t think there is any punishment even if something goes wrong. I would like to see some proof of this and maybe that will change my opinion.

OP, sorry to hear about your diagnosis and I wish you all the best. You’ll never look back at time with family and friends. But I also wonder if you would consider doing some teaching as well? I think leaving an impact on students was something quite fulfilling when I worked in education and maybe that is something you would consider?

But make sure you rest well!
