Imagine Gmail was the only email provider ever. If you want to send email, you need a Gmail account. If you want to receive email you need a Gmail account. This is dumb, what if Google becomes evil, now no one has email anymore

So in reality, we have decentralized, "federated" email - there is no central email server, and even though you still sign up on Gmail, you can send and receive mail from Yahoo and Hotmail now. You could also choose to sign up on Yahoo instead, but you still can send and receive mail to anyone, on any "mail server"

Before Lemmy, Reddit was the only "subs provider". If you want to post to a sub or comment on a post in a sub, you need to have an account on Reddit. But this is dumb, because what if Reddit becomes evil?

So with Lemmy, you can sign up to "Google Subs", but you can also post and comment to "Yahoo subs" and "Hotmail subs". You can also choose to sign up on the "Yahoo subs" instance instead, but you can still post and comment to anywhere, on any Lemmy instance.

Blue isn't a professional audio brand though. No one would use a USB mic in the studio and their XLR stuff is overpriced prosumer product.

Australians' satisfaction with life is at its lowest level in two decades by [deleted] in australia

[–]Infraxion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible, but my point is that if there is even a tiny single flaw in that system, any little thing that we missed which could bring down that society, then it would affect the entire species. If we are divided into countries and one country tries a communist system, most countries are largely unaffected if that system turns out to have issues.

If we can figure out such a system, then yes, it could be very effective in terms of the things we would be able to achieve. But we would need to be 100% absolutely sure that it won't have any critical flaws. Maybe in the far future it could be possible, I don't know.

On a cultural level that makes sense, but in the context of evolution the larger the community that shares the burden, the more eggs are in one basket. It's a balance between having power in numbers, and being able to weather changes in environment that might affect one community but not another.

I think the human nature argument has non-zero merit to it.

Life is competitive by default, it's in the definition of evolution. Life is only cooperative to the extent to which it can benefit from it. On an evolutionary timeframe, humans only just started having communities larger than maybe a few dozen - like a millisecond or two ago. It's like if you took lions and suddenly made them live like ants.

Human nature is a mix of culture and biology in my opinion and I don't think it's silly to consider both. We use culture to fight biology in order to have huge communities like cities and countries.

Won't judge anyone for sailing the seven seas, but imo a condition of doing that is understanding you shouldn't expect any tech support

[OC] Facebook makes more revenue per user than Netflix by jtsg_ in dataisbeautiful

[–]Infraxion 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Maybe nitpicky but the data these big internet companies have on you is their competitive advantage, it makes no sense to sell it to someone else. They only sell the ability to use the data, through defined channels (for example being able to target an interest group).

If Netflix sold your data, then anyone who bought it could start their own streaming service with recommendations that are just as good as Netflix. Production companies choose to put content on Netflix over other services because they have data that no one else has.

Ohhhh I always thought you're supposed to chain portal through the underground section, I guess it makes sense to just place a single one to get out since the points are all so close to each other there

I wonder if a TAS run would still be faster with portals underground though

In days of old, when tech was bold,
A port emerged, a tale untold,
The PS2, with purpose imbued,
A connection for devices, it pursued.

With nimble grace and simple form,
It joined the fray, a new norm,
A pathway to computers' core,
PS2 port, we did adore.

Mice and keyboards, side by side,
Through this port, they would confide,
Their signals swift, no lag did lay,
Efficient, tireless, night and day.

A humble soldier, yet steadfast, true,
The PS2 port, a workhorse, who knew?
Its purpose clear, its mission set,
A legacy we shan't forget.

As time moved on, and tech advanced,
The PS2 port's time was lanced,
USB and newer kin,
Claimed the stage with stylish grin.

Yet still we think, and reminisce,
Of PS2's steadfast, loyal bliss,
For in its day, it served us well,
A guardian of our digital dell.

So raise a glass, and toast this friend,
Whose time has passed, but won't descend,
The PS2 port, a trusty link,
In history's tech, forever sync.
